~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey have an first generaion Drummer. Hey officer my pipe is stock! Look at EPA no. on it!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I actually got pulled over for speeding around this time last year. I didn't end up with a ticket, just got the speech, and I had left my bike running. He started to give me crap about the noise level of the muffler so I told him that he was welcome to check the EPA stamp on the underside of it. ...I have a first-gen Drummer. |
Can you get in trouble for using your tail light to light up your plate? |
When my licence plate mount (aluminum plate) broke the first time I thought that I could get away with attaching the plate to the frame in front of the rear tire, right behind the oilbag, with some adell clamps, looked great... the neighborhood LEO's thought otherwise and made me mount it behind the tire under the tailight again, was lucky though, I was able to talk my way outy of a ticket, I just had to show them the bike with the plate in the new "stock" location. |
Can you get in trouble for using your tail light to light up your plate? M2 Taillights are like that as well. AS FAR AS I KNOW, the only stipulation, is that is it supposed to be illumintated in white, though I could be wrong. FWIW, my X1 is lit with the tail light..one of the few things I havent been pulled for, as all my lights curretnly have DOT marks.} Chase |
The XB Lightning tail light is mounted with the brake light, not the license plate light. When the license plate light blows a fuse it takes out the tail light, turn signals and instrument panel. The brake light still works, but I didn't know that for my nervous ride home. |
i was leaving austin heading back to houston right at dark, about 170 miles i think, noticed my headlight was out. only had five dollars on me and needed it for gas. i would pull up to a car and let them know i was there and shadow them until they turned off and then hook up with another car. i got pulled over two blocks from my apartment! told the cop my story and he let me go on home! i also got a ticket for loud exhaust because another bike with straight pipes blew by me at a stoplight. two cops were standing by their cars in front of a donut shop, looked up, saw me and wrote me up. dismissed in court. philip |
Did the same cop that let you go on the head light give you the ticket for loud pipes? Why was it dismissed? |
When I had my VRod, I was in the process of relocating my plate, and my new holder didn't arrive before my service date. So I rode it home from the dealer with no plate or holder, and not only was there a cop behind me, I changed lanes in front of him (not realizing it was a cop). He didn't notice a thing. |
got tailed on the highway then stopped because the LEO 'couldn't read my plate at that angle'... i have the standard HBM LP bracket. he wrote up a warning and said if he sees me in CT again with the plate like that he'll ticket me. whatever. plate reads fine, the angle is not severe. he made up some bullsh*t that its CT law the plate must be completely perpendicular/vertical to the road, no angle at all. i looked up the law... it only needs to be clear from 50ft. and it is. i was not speeding. just in all black. guess i LOOKED like i was gonna do some bad. he immediately pulled off highway shoulder to tail me, then threw the lights on. this same cop was gonna ticket another guy for having his high-beams on during the day. said the rider was 'blinding people'. um, then go ticket the sun, fool. this was at like 2PM! never been harassed for my Special O.P.S. or Drummer. too many freekin' straight pipes around here for them to care about my noise level. |
There is a reason that a stock motorcycle comes equiped the way it is (ie; signals, plate location, etc...) When a bike is modified from these specifications, it may or may not meet the requirements of the law in any given state. MOST law enforcement officers are not going to risk their careers by making something up to harass you. |
Out of curiosity I wanted to see what the Connecticut Law said regarding license plate display... This is what I found... CHAPTER 246 Sec. 14-18.Display of number plates and stickers. Issuance of sample number plates. Return of number plates to commissioner. (a)(1) Each motor vehicle for which one number plate has been issued shall, while in use or operation upon any public highway, display in a conspicuous place at the rear of such vehicle the number plate. Each such motor vehicle shall also display a sticker on the number plate or elsewhere on the vehicle, as the commissioner may direct, denoting the expiration date of the registration. Such sticker may contain the corresponding letters and numbers of the registration and number plate, as assigned by the commissioner. (2) Each motor vehicle for which two number plates have been issued shall, while in use or operation upon any public highway, display in a conspicuous place at the front and the rear of such vehicle the number plates. Each such motor vehicle shall also display a sticker on the rear number plate or elsewhere on the vehicle, as the commissioner may direct, denoting the expiration date of the registration, which may contain the corresponding letters and numbers of the number plate, as assigned by the commissioner. (b) Repealed by 1969, P.A. 247, S. 1. (c) Such number plates when displayed upon motor vehicles shall be entirely unobscured and the numerals and letters thereon shall be plainly legible at all times. Such number plates shall be horizontal, and shall be fastened so as not to swing and, during the time when a motor vehicle is required to display lights, the rear number plate shall be so illuminated as to be legible at a distance of fifty feet. No plates, devices or attachments may be affixed to or covering the official number plates. |
"MOST law enforcement officers are not going to risk their careers by making something up to harass you." Bull!!!!!!!! risk what? Ive been pulled over for suspicion in the middle of the afternoon driving speed limit down road back in the early 90's mind you long before 911 mentallity. also for 4mph over in Utah, again for not complete stop even though I did, they dont need to make anything up the some laws are so vague and open ended they pick from many to use on you. Just like some cars with dark window tint get pulled over some dont if it looks like a kids car they screw with em if it looks like an expensive new car they dont. I just thought you comment "MOST COPS" was way too vague, they are all unique individules with different profiling techniques and morals. |
MOST law enforcement officers are not going to risk their careers by making something up to harass you. i'm sure 'MOST' wouldn't... this guy was clueless. after pulling over the other guy with brights on he came back and asked me how long i'd been riding... said the guy with the brights on told him it was in his manual for 'safety reasons. cars dont see us'. i said i don't know if its in a manual but i know its common that bikers leave their brights on for increased visibility. but why is he asking me? Out of curiosity I wanted to see what the Connecticut Law said regarding license plate display... This is what I found... and those laws are exactly what my plate is in accordance with. i had always suspected that a vertical plate was illegal, even before looking into the perpendicular-to-road thing, which you can see is not listed in the quoted laws. a vertical config interferes with legibility for sure. |
MOST law enforcement officers are not going to risk their careers by making something up to harass you. Most cops are stupid. Period. In just one hour I'll be at the gym traing with my cop buddy and he agrees with me. I got a ticket for laying drag (spinning tires) and the cop was right behind me. lol. Redlight was out and traffic was thick. manual tranny and a FWD car with econmay tires. So I spun tires. Few hundred yard later I see blue lights and pull over. this public saftey officer enforcer of laws. Skids into my back end. And still gave me a ticket for spinning tires. I plead not guilty and requested a jury trial. Never went to court the Judge laughed at the cop and told him he didn't have a chance in winning. Major two points. 1- cops don't know every law to the tee. read the code for that law before you plead guilty or pay a fine. in my case a FDW can not by code definition break that law. Unable to fish tail or do a donought in a FWD car. Plus you are allowed to do so in order to avoid an accident. 2- plead not guilty are let the over burden court system drop the charges. (not always) but in my county. 3- not all cops are traffic cops. Just becuase they were a uniform doesn't mean a thing. In my case the toad that hit my car was a paper pusher he even had to get his captains ticket book then had to look up the code violation number. |
Equipment Violations Equipment Violations is just the intial reason to create the traffic stop. Often bikes are ridden without insurance or license. Or chances are they will attempt to run. Just be polite. Turn off the engine. Put the kick stand down. Slowly remove helmet. Stay on the bike. If moving for paperwork tell the officer where the paperwork is beofre you attempt to get it. |
Here on Long Island the cops are handing out tickets for non OEM Exhaust. Two of my buddies got tickets this Tuesday night. They both had Vance and Hines pipes. This was not for loud pipes but for non OEM pipes. Mike Long Island, NY 06 XB12X Black of course |
I must be lucky then. LEOs don't bother me much at all, anymore. The last time I got stopped I was told that I should remove that trailer ball, it blocks the view of my rear plate, still haven't done it. Not to spite the LEO mind you more because I see no reason to remove it. "MJ" |
