As some of you know I make TV/films. One of my upcoming shoots I need to make "objects" spark as they are drug down a road. I'm not sure exactly how to do this. But I do know that my motrax sparkies knee pucks spark up when they are applied to the road. I'm looking for a metal/material that will give the max amount of spark, for a good price. Should I go out and get a bunch of strips of titanium like the metal studs in my pucks? has anyone made there own homemade sparky knee pucks? Is There some thing I can use that is cheaper then titanium that will spark well? Please Advise. |

The Motrax and Wiz sliders spark up real good and sound great. Motrax also have some sliders with a titanium case http://www.motrax.co.uk/Index_pages/clothingaccessories/titanium.htm that allegedly guarantees maximum sparking performance. |

I'll bet a little piece of magnesium would do the trick quite well. |

Where can I buy magnesium? I remember using a firestarter sparker thing-a-ma-jig. It was a little block. That you srcaped with your pocket knife to get a fire started. It was not mine I just used it. I dont know where the guy got it from. Are these little blocks mag or ti? |

They are magnesium you can get them at any camping supply. |

The problem with using magnesium is that it will burn with an EXTREMELY hot fire which is EXTREMELY difficult to put out. I'm not sure that it'll ignite from friction, but I'd suggest you research that a little further before you try it. Here's some info I found on line: http://www.burningart.com/meico/pyro/mag.html |

Titanium is more expensive, but also won't wear away as quickly, or catch fire like magnesium will. |

Barker, All you need is some plain ole carbon steel. Look at www.mcmaster.com for small quantities. Steel will be graded like 1020, 1045...1095. The last two number indicate carbon content. Carbon makes the sparks when you grind steel. 1095 steel has more carbon than 1020, so it should give you more sparks. Hope that helps |

The thing about sparking knee pucks: Most track day organization specifically disallow them. On the street, they are a greater danger and I know of one confirmed wildfire that destroyed two homes and burned hundreds of acres that was caused by sparks. P.S. height doesn't really have much to do with knee dragging. It's more about body positioning and control. I've helped riders 5' and shorter learn to drag knee. They are at best a distraction to the riders behind you. Vik |

Well let me put this thread back where it started. We got the shot. The "object" was a little wagon(radio flyer). We took the wheels off and drug it down a road. Wanna know how I made the sparks? For less than $2! 4 big a$$ steel washers 24 cents each 1 Tube of super glue 57 cents Bunch of sparks flying off a red wagon as it is being drug behind an old pickup, priceless. I just super glued the washers(flat side to road surface) to the strut/axles of the wagon and put some sandbags in the wagon to give it some mass. Worked great! Thanx for your help. I just got an idea after watching the drag-n-fire vids. I'm going home and gluing some of those thick washers to my boots! |

This might seem like a silly question, but I have a mad reason for asking, that could potentially net myself millions if I ever get around to making my invention. So, what MINIMUM velocity would say titanium, or high carbon content steel need to be traveling at to make it spark good? Anyone know? Rocket |

Hmm. Ref the washers/boots idea, they'll get rather hot if continually ground, & melt or even light your boots up. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying short periods & plenty cooling time. If not at least have someone film it so we can all have a good laugh. |
