after 26 combined hours of riding and driving we all made it to the dragon! we got to ride the dragon today and all i have to say is holly sh!t what a roed. on the way the down from NY Saintly hit a bat that maneged to relieve it's self all over his face mask. did i mention that the face mask was half way open..... and he was happy about it too. mikexlr650 and track95ker were going down 43 comming off the blue ridge parkway. they noticed that the brakes smelled a little hot . so they stop to watch the pretty smoke come off the brakes. while at the same time saintly was trying to figure out how to operate a piece of new technology i mean a cell phone...... while the other to realized the the high quality u-haul trailer while it came with brakes they didn't tell them that they did not work. witch caused his brakes on his brand new jeep liberty to smoke like a smoke bomb on the forth of july. so i started out in ohio at 10:00 this moring and got here at 6:30 this afternoon. met up with every body at the dragon. where we all rode back to the iron horse motor lodge. where we met up with xb9ser after his ride in some torrential down pour's. then we all started swapping story's and dropped are bike's rolling the off the deck where we put them to get them out of the rain. well jimduncan69 and saintly are the only ones that dropped our bike's. no damage just a broken foot peg. but all in all it is shaping up to be one hell of a trip. we will be talking about this for years to come. stay tuned we will keep you updated as thing's happen. |

On another note, I am not sure of the types of microorganisms carried in bat waste. Saintly may want to talk to a physician or infectious diease specialist. Just for peace of mind. Our resident nature guru may have some ideas. Tramp??? |

I'm not Tramp but if the bat actually hit your friend and broke the skin or bodily fluid went into his eyes, nose or mouth I would definately contact his physician. Rabies does not transmit through blood, fecal matter or urine however if it truly exploded then he may have been exposed to brain, spinal fluids or saliva which does carry the disease. In addition bats can carry other pathogens as well but as mentioned above rabies is the biggest concern. Easily avoided if treatment is started early but pretty much invariably fatal once symptoms appear. Not to worry though todays' treatment consist of a short series of shots unlike days' past where the treatment was quite painful. Bottom line is although the risks are relatively small a physician should be consulted to determine if there is a need for worry. Ya'll have a safe trip and take plenty of pics for us Badwebbers! |

what Luvthemtorts said (as always ) ....lyme, bartonella, ascarids, etc., all can be transmitted by bats....all through urine and blood. I used to scoff at lyme, and the joke, for life it would appear, is on me. All North American mammals are vectors for dangerous diseases, and bats tend to cover more ground than most, AND feed on blood-sucking (think about that for a moment) insects..... yikes. |

I hope you guys are screwin with me cause all the guys down here are trying to scare me! MikeXLr keeps telling me that I look like I'm salivating a lot, and Trac95ker was busting my balls about earlier when I was complaining about how bright & hot the sun was. He said that sensitivity to light is the first sign of rabies. I think that they're all just trying to mess with me. Jimduncan & xb9ser are telling me horror stories of 13 painfull injections in the abdomen and such. So shoot straight with me badwebbers. There's nothing for me to be worried about right? Right? Right? |

Saintly, In all honesty if the bat got bodily fluids on you then you need to speak to a physician. As I mentioned earlier you aren't going to get Rabies from urine but in a high speed collision you may have gotten other types of fluids in your eyes, nose or mouth that can indeed cause transmission. The chances are slim but still a possibility. Your physician will have to determine if the risk is acceptable. He will probably say no worries but let him make the decision based on the concise information you give him regarding exposure and the events surrounding the incident. The treatment has been very refined and consists of a series of shots in different injection sites. Gone are the days of huge needles and excruciating pain. Simple as getting vaccinations so don't let them scare you. Also the symptoms wouldn't show up that quickly. It can take many weeks and sometimes longer to show up. The bad thing about that is you could go a month feeling dandy and then WHAMMO, too late to do anything about it. CALL YOUR PHYSICIAN BRUTHA! |

All joking aside go get checked out, better safe than sorry. You know the beard has to come off if you do have rabies dont you? Friend here in Rockland got bit by his "pet racoon" series of shots and thats it. |

actually, saint- without having the bat's head to test, they'll just give you the injection series. bats, believe it or not, are not a strong vbector for rabies. skunks, racoons and foxes are more prone to carry. the reason bats get the bad rap is because, when a human actually finds one out on plain sight in the daytime, esp. on the ground,it's got something wrong with it. bats are very secretive by day. a flying bat that you collided with at night is far less cause for concern. seriously. of course, by the time you're symptomatic for rabies, it's too late. there is no 'checking out' that a physician can do for rabies, on your person. you will not present with symptoms until you're already doomed to a painful death. what a qualified physician can do, however, is contact the local county and state health dep't.as and check on rabies incidence in that region, and determine your relative risk factor. if the health dep't has seen some rabies there this summer or last, they may advise a series. my gut is they won't, and i wouldn't be concerned if it were me, but i am just another motorcyclist, really. speak to a bona fide health care professional |

There was a story in the news in the last few months about a girl who covered from rabies, one of 6 known cases: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5350a1.htm Definitely NOT something to roll the dice on. |

Saintly. Like I said even on the off chance that they do decide you need post exposure prophylaxis it is no big deal. One dose of immune globulin followed by five doses of vaccination over a 28 day period. No worse than a tetanus shot. Don't take the chance. The very few people who have lived were left in a persistant vegetative state with the exception of the young lady in the link above. Even she has yet to make a full recovery. If you do speak to your physician let us know what he/she says. I am a real geek when it comes to things like this and am always looking for more first hand information. |
