Great game! Poor sportsmanship on the part of Zidane. Congratulations Italy. |

Way to go Italy!!!!! Woooohoooo!!! Rocco, I was in downtown Rio DeJaniero during Italy's win over Brazil in 1982. After the game and Italy's win. You would have thought the place had been hit by a neutron bomb. Nothing moving, no one out and about, dead silence. I imagine the extreme opposite in towns and cities all over Italy right now. I too was rooting for Italy. |

Yes, Zidane ended his last game on a really sour note. No reason to headbutt someone. I couldn't have been happier when the red card came out. Blake, you know then , first hand, how serious this game is around the World. People live and die for it. Literally! Too bad the American Team wasn't very good this year. My family is straight off the boat from Italy. I'm first generation. Yes, MY family did it right and got their Citizenship. Grew up around the game and played it into Collage. I love American Football, but Soccer is still my favorite sport. |

Congrats to Italy. I was pulling for France only because Zizou is my favorite soccer player. I am very disappointed in his actions and there is no excuse for it. I just hope he decides to play one more year in Madrid for Capello. Can't wait until South Africa 2010. |

Video of the unfortunate act... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1i_l0OeeMc Translation of the French announcer after the head butt is "And why? And Why? And Why?!" He is very much dismayed at the behavior of his countryman. I wonder what set him off? That was ridiculous. |

At that level of play you have to be able to put up with some trash talking. His loss of control arguably cost his team a world championship. His stats on penalty kicks are very good, it might have changed tings. Jack |

First round of the penalty kick tie-breaker was won 5 to 3 by Italy. One additional French goal would have made it a 5 to 4 win for Italy and so would not have reversed the result. |

Italy was better, for the most part. Ten players scored their goals in the tournament. That's team play. Zidane, what can anyone say? So sad an exit. HEY, who was only team to not get defeated by Italy in this World Cup? ... . . . USA! So maybe there is hope. Maybe... |

Zidane's exit was sad. Seeing him walk off the field for the last time, with the head-butt as the lasting image of him, was definitely emotional. As far as the actual headbutt, the "rumor", mostly fueled by French players, is that Materazzi used a racial slur against Zidane. I've seen Zidane for many years, play in many games, and he puts up with a lot and with enormous class. But Materazzi apparently crossed a very sensitive line with Zidane. If the speculation is true, I have no sympathy whatsoever for Materazzi and I think he got what he deserved... |

Nice Pics! Zidane has a history of throwing hissy fits. Very poor sportsmanship. I also believe that another classless act was when they hung the 2nd place metals around the players of the French teams necks, some took them off right away. Even the coach took his off and shoved it in his pocket. I realize you don't play for 2nd place. I understand the disappointment. I've been there. However, show some class. You're grown men for Pete sake! They have no one to blame but themselves. As far as Materazzi get what he "deserved"? Bullschmit! At that level of competition, you should be above that kind of behavior. Talk is just that, talk. That kind of reaction reminds me of NASCAR and that's one of the reasons I don't watch a single race. |

>One additional French goal would have made it a 5 to 4 win for Italy and so would not have reversed the result. It was 5-3 because Italy went first and never missed. France missed once and thus never got the 5th shot. |

It was Bedlam in Bensonhurst and madness on Mulberry Street. Vick's Aunt Mary, the 85 year-old who has cooked for some of you when you are here, was in Italy in 1982 for the last win. She was off, quite literally, her rocker last night. WOW |

D'OH! Thanks for the correction Josh. I hereby revise my logic. Only if the 4th French shooter had been Zidane's replacement in the tie-breaker penalty kick line-up could one seriously argue that his ejection changed the outcome of the game. How's that? |

>How's that? Wellllll.... It was the 2nd shooter that missed by hitting the cross bar (just like Zidane did in his penalty kick at 7' into regulation, but Zidane's shot bounced in, Trezeguet's bounced out) |

A depressing finish to what was a great World Cup...Don't get me wrong, Italy had a tremendous Cup, allowing only an own goal and a penalty kick throughout the tournament. But Zidane's head butt was inexcusable. It will go down as one of the most disgraceful acts ever in the history of the beautiful game. |

So now we find out Materazzi insulted Zidane's mother and sister...is it still inexcusable?? What would you do in that position, whether on the street or on the field?? It's hard for me to figure out why so many people are demonizing Zidane for what I still consider to be a understandable reaction. |

The field is not the street...and that's the issue. He's a professional and should act like one. Do you honestly think that insults are thrown around in every game? There are other ways of retaliating, like scoring the winning goal, that would've been the appropriate action. Truth of the matter is I didn't hear what was said, you didn't hear what was said, only Zidane and Materazzi know for sure. Did it deserve a head butt? In my opinion, not during the final of the world cup. If it were at the local pub? Kick his fricken ass! |

That's hilarious...I'll be passing that link around for sure. The American one sounds about right the way they were covering it on the news..."Zidane's vicious attack on Materazzi".... (Message edited by spreadem on July 15, 2006) |
