my mom recently aquired a nice laptop (once again, tramp is upstaged by his more financially secure siblings...) so tramp's little mom insisted, as a token of appreciation for the regina fuel system pump R&R he performed on her 740dl, that tramp inherit her admittedly paleozoic HP pavilion. so, trampsky , armed with his win 98 boot disk (that's what she was running), formatted the thang (i've done this many a time in the past, no probs)...and now it won't reboot from the disk. I was going to install 2000 (i know- I'm old-school) any advice? pleeeze? |

maybe this will help? when you first boot the computer you should get screen that says press either <del> or <f1> or something similar to enter the BIOS. In the BIOS you can usually tell the computer to boot from hard-drive first (typical setup)..or have it go to floppy first to try to boot. save the changes and reboot. maybe that helps? |

Win2000 is bootable so you should be able to boot from it and install. If you continue to have problems feel free to call me at 918-830-0063 CST. I worked for HP, Compaq and every brand for more years than I want to count. |

Geez- thanks, fellers. I will save that number, alright. I'll try just booting from win2000. so, even on mom's machine, on which I've already wiped the hard drive, I should be able to boot from my win2000 disk? (I hope I understood that correctly...) thanks- Jay |

Tramp You should be able to boot right from the CD. On all HP Pavilions they came from the factory with a "Recovery" Cd which the system booted from to reinstall all software and Operating System. You may have to go into the BIOS to make sure it is set to boot from the CD as the first boot device but is very rarely changed. Hope that helps. |

If that has a CD drive, it should be able to boot from the Windows 2000 CD and it will do the setup from there. I use W2K on all my systems, XP has nothing to offer me. Drop me your address to jacker at midmaine dot com and I can hook you up with the bootable CD if you need it. Jack |

Tramp, if you get totally stuck let me know. I am always looking for excuses to ride, and IIRC you are in Orange County NY? I not that far away (Near Albany) and would take a ride down (assuming it stops raining long enough) and help you out (been a computer geek for the last 21 or so years). |

You could always try the Windows 2000 boot disk set also. Just google "Windows 2000 boot disks" and you should be able to find them |

Tramp you can't format with win98 and expect to install win2k over it until you have actually installed win98 completely. Set the bios to boot from cd and just start with the win2k disk. It will format (use NTFS formatting) and install straight from cd. |

Thank, Luke- looks lioke the CD-R drive might be shot on this unit, anyway. I get the prompt to 'press any key toboot from CD', and, whether or not there's aCD in there, it tells me there's an invalid cd in it. Also doesn't make that 'whooshing' noise after I load it. again, thanks fellers. I'm gonna try installing a different CD-Rom...Just gotta figure out how to download the drivers without an OS. BIOS, I assume? |
