...of course, you'll find many experts who've never used one in combat who'll refute that point..... imagine someone who's never raced a given sportbike extolling the track virtues of it. So let me get this straight, you can't be knowledgeable about the strengths and weaknesses of a weapon/caliber unless you've used it in combat? By that logic, then you would only be able to comment on weapons you've personally have used in a combat situation, correct? Have you used a Glock in combat? Sig? H&K? What about a CorBon +P 125 grain JHP? Or a HydraShok? Do you see where I'm going with this? You simply don't have to be a combat veteran in order to be knowledgeable about the effectiveness of various firearms/calibers. Tests are conducted, real-world accounts are reported on, practical knowledge is disseminated in a variety of formats; all is available to the average citizen. |

Roadrailer is right. Combat is not necessary. You can shoot the neighbors dogs and find out just about anything you want. I can tell you one thing, I put a Hydroshock in to a St. Bernard and knocked it off it's feet. I used a plain unjacked lead round nose in the same gun and it took three bullets just to slow down is lab. |

> I just bought a taurus 24/7 pro 40 over the weekend and was wondering if anyone here has shot on yet, or has any word about it. I love my .40 24/7. Comfortable grips, excellent safety features, very reliable, and quite accurate once you get used to the heavy DAO trigger. |

ooooh now the sa/dao debate too! I prefer the sa pistol, then again I trained with 1911a1's in the usn and in ipsc competition. before ipsc became an equipment race. We used to use real, reliable carry weapons in real daily carry holsters. No "race guns" 38 super etc were commonly seen until 1990 or so at the club level. When the Hemisphere holster became necessary to place in a tourney I quit that game. The single stack 1911 also became non-competetive about that time. I couldn't afford it any more. |

Actually at the ranges you are talking about in a house you DO have to aim a shotgun. The shot remains more of a column of lead for the first 15ft or so. I probably should have elaborated on that one. Of course you have to aim, there was a bit of tongue in cheek involved... but you have a bit of fudge factor with a shotgun over a pistol. My shotgun, with a 20" barrel has a spread of about 2-3" between 15 - 20 feet with #3. Just a tad wider than the cartridge under 10 feet. Didn't have any buck shot when I was doing those tests, by you are probably right about the minimal spread for buckshot}. Yes I have been trained in defensive shotgun, both as a member of my ship's security alert team, and as part of training for drug interdiction joint ops with the coast guard. When were you doing this?? I did a bit of drug interdiction flights (P-3) while in the Navy. Did most of this out of Rosie Roads. We are the same age, so I was figuring we probably did this around the same time.} (Message edited by ratyson on June 22, 2006) |

Unless you have a "duck-bill" those are a nasty piece of work. Barrel end is shaped like a duck bill and spreads shot flat. Great for close in stuff (think onboard ships with steel walls) or clearing brush. Then you don't need to worry much about aiming, except general directions. For self defense I'd pick a shotgun every time. personal favorite: Rem 11-87 3 1/2" 12 ga. semi 18" smooth bore 8-shot with ghost rings. Simple, fast, EFFECTIVE. Up to 80yds depending on ammo. Difference between a man hunting with a rifle and a man hunting with a shotgun? man with rifle is hunting for sport, man with shotgun is hunting for DINNER! Drug interdiction was 91-93 off and on. My ship at the time was the Wichita. AOR1 Big fuel/ammo ship. I was the only person on board boat engineer, coxwain, and Security team qualified so I got to go do boarding parties. Boring stuff most of the time, but there was an incident that I had to go before a review board over. A foreign national thought he would take MY boat by force. We had a brief disagreement over it. I'm still here. (Message edited by diablobrian on June 22, 2006) |

"Have you used a Glock in combat?" God Id hate to have to, maybe it wont jam when stuffed in the mud but the well taken care of piece of crap I tried was so friggin loose you couldnt hit a barn with it. No offense to any Glock owners but ones Ive shot were so inaccurate compared to other pistols. Either way I shoot for fun and it isnt fun when you cant hit anything or come even close to a grouping |

> ooooh now the sa/dao debate too! For a smooth feel and fun shooting, you can't beat the SA. I like my DAO for personal defense though. The trigger pull is consistent for every shot, and a heavy trigger means you don't shoot anything unless you REALLY mean to. |

I've shot a lot of Glocks (17, 17L, 19, 22, 23, 26, 27, 30, and 34 )and have never found them to be any less accurate than any other stock defensive pistol of similar barrel lengths. In fact, most of the top IDPA shooters around here use Glocks because of their reliability and accuracy. |

Spatten1 if you did what you said you did (shoot dogs) you should arrested and be turned out into general population. I don't think really did the shooting. But I am advising admin to edit your posts out and to have your rights to the web site be revoked. That is worst thing I have ever read on this site. |

Yeesh, it was obviously a joke. If you don't like it, no one's forcing you to read it. You have many rights as an American, but never being offended is not one of them. |

Just so everyone understands, I thought the conversation arguing about understanding the merits of a firearm only being possible if you have used it in combat was getting a bit heated and drawn out. I thought if I'd drop an over the top tangential comment, that was obviously sarcastic, it might lighten things up. I was wrong. Now I am a sick person that should be in jail. I still contend that my Taurus 9MM has been a great gun for the last 15 years, but I'd trade it for a .40 if I could. |

Sometimes emotions and especially sarcasm don't translate well on the web, but the use of emoticons or ascii equivalents does wonders. :-P Aim well.

I like guns. I own a lot of them. So many in fact that listing them would be a liability. There is no point in debating which one is the best since I have a great selection. The real point is this: I'm ready for anything short of reactive armor plating. (Message edited by pwnzor on June 23, 2006) |

Mike -- I believe so -- the family expert (that gave the piece to me) is sadly, no longer with us -- my expertise, such as is it, is limited to the late-mid-20th century, and it (the expertise) is very small it's a nice pistol, though -- shoots better than I can, and much prettier n me (and, Thang, yessir -- the armory was spic-and-spanned after your departure ;-} ) |
