Most of the reviews say the Escort 8500 and the Beltronics RX 65 are best. I understand they are now owned by the same company. If a warranty is important to you, be careful because most of the internet sellers are not authorized resellers and you won't get a warranty. YMMV

If the LD world means anything to you I believe you will find the weapon of choice is the Valentine 1. I have used them for years and can't say enough good about their operation and the service when you want to update. regards ref

I'm curious as to how the US speed limits are enforced?

I too had a Valentine 1 for several years. I traded it in this January for a New Road Angel 2.

There are simply that many cameras of varying types to catch you over here, that it's a must to have a device that knows where ALL the camera sites are. That means having a device that contains stored information as to the whereabouts of ALL camera sites, and which is talking to satellites tracking your whereabouts. This is why I switched from a detector only device. The NRA2 has the benefit of laser detection and other band detection too, for those hand held or mobile devices.

Rocket -- almost all laser and radar speed detectors the constabulary uses in the US are mounted in vehicals -- dectors in the US are just that, they detect the presence of radar/laser energy (hopefully limited to the frequencies used by the LEOs), and report the presence of same -- up til now, this was sufficient unto the day

with unmanned cameras being installed hereabouts, this may change

Sounds like in the UK, your Road Angel tells you when you're approaching a camera, and allows you to adjust to suit? how is it updated, and form what kind of database (can you simply plug it into the local cop shop and get the latest and greatest data?)

When you make the initial purchase of the NRA2, or similar, you are given a years subscription to the company, or their agents database. You are offered options to extend the length of subscription from the get go, or later if you so wish. The database contains ALL the fixed camera sites known, including temporary erected ones like those at road work sites.

The law in the UK states that all cameras, sited or placed in mobile units, are safety devices that have to be situated at know accident or black spot areas. As a side note, more recent changes in the way the cameras are run has seen the removal of cameras from areas where they were just cash generators. As they are safety devices, camera sites, fixed and mobile, are published. In the case of mobile units this might be done weekly in local newspapers or on local radio daily. Regarding mobile cameras, they can only operate in certain areas at certain points, and that changes from day to day and week to week, but those locations are published beforehand. The fixed camera sites are not published in the same way. Their whereabouts is available through various companies, like Blackspot UK, who manufacture the NRA2, and offer the information as to their whereabouts via subscription.

As you ride / drive down the road your detector is talking to three and sometimes four satellites (that's what your subscription is paying for) so the detector knows where it is in relation to the database information stored inside it. As you approach a fixed camera site the detector will ALWAYS let you know you are doing so.

Mobile cameras, hand held guns etc, devices like VASCAR placed in moving police vehicles, your detector acts just like a normal detector swooping Laser and various radar bands. The whereabouts of such devices in use is not database available information. This is where your Valentine 1's score heavily.

To garner information from the database for the fixed camera locations is a simple five minute job and you can do it as often as you like. A good idea if you travel around the country everyday as new cameras are erected just about everyday. You can do it by connecting your device to your PC when you are online. A click on the icon has you downloading the latest information instantly, or you can via link cable and supplied modem (at extra cost) plug into any available phone socket, like in a hotel bedroom or wherever if you're away from your PC for a length of time.

Hope this helps.

I bought an Escort from Escort as I was worried about getting an older new one on Ebay and it not being up to date software wise. I have it on a RAM mount and love it. I has saved many times over now. It is hardwired and I use an earphone until I splurge for a wireless LED setup in my helmet.
