We have been having a discussion in the "Bad Batch Front Isolators" thread, and I thought it might add some insight to this issue if we did an informal survey of isolator experiences, both good and bad. There has been a wide variety of experiences and mileage achieved by Buellers and their isolators.

Please indicate the following:

*year and model of your Buell tuber,

*percentage of time you ride two-up,

*whether or not you are a stunter (wheelies, etc.),

*the kind of riding you do primarily (touring, Interstate or curve chasing, etc.),

*modifications to your motor, frame, etc.,

*the history of your front and rear isolators, (both success and failures)

*any other pertinent info that you think may have contributed to the success or failures of your isolators.

This should be at least as interesting as the poll on what age you are (which was a resounding success!), and hopefully we can get some real data that will help us figure out what is going on with these isolators.

Thanks,

Jimidan

2001 X1 Lighting.....less than 5% 2 up....no wheeles most often lift front wheel 6 to 12 inches pulling out of conner.....Run the twisties hard with hard breaking on front(just recent blow the seals in forks from this)but have not had any problem with isolators as of yet.have fingers crossed. 40,000 miles on bike.

*year and model of your Buell tuber,
1995 S2, 2000 M2 (early 2000 bought in Aug.'99)

*percentage of time you ride two-up,
less than 1% on the S2, less than 10% on the M2.

*whether or not you are a stunter (wheelies, etc.),
Nope, any wheelies are purely torque lifts ancilliary to throttle use without intentional wheelie inducement.

*the kind of riding you do primarily (touring, Interstate or curve chasing, etc.),
Yes.

*modifications to your motor, frame, etc.,
S2, stock except for a/c and jetting
M2, stock except for a/c, jetting, and sometimes a different exhaust. ventura rack on the M2.

*the history of your front and rear isolators, (both success and failures)
S2, stock and original as far as I can tell, a bit over 23,000 miles on the bike, rears seem fine, front needs replacing.
M2, stock and original on front and probably needs replacing now, rears were changed out for other non-failure reasons, a bit under 30,000 miles on the bike. I haven't rode too much in the last couple of years (funny how marriage and a 100 year old house affects riding time....)

*any other pertinent info that you think may have contributed to the success or failures of your isolators.
Ozone? The S2 had the rocker breather routed up to a filter on the triple trees near the isolator which either helped or hurt or didn't do either with the oil/mist venting and sometimes making a mess up there.

Bike: 2000 Buell S3, ~18,000 miles (13,000 since I've owned it)
Two-up riding: 0% two-up for first ~10,000 miles of my ownership
25% two-up for last ~3,000 miles.
Stunting: None (maybe occasional inadvertent front wheel lift during acceleration)
Kind of riding: Commuting, touring & curve chasing
Isolator history: Rear isolators replaced with update kit at ~10,000 miles; evidence of separation on one of them.
Front isolator replaced at 15,500 miles. No evidence of tear in old isolator. New isolator failed completely at ~17,750 miles.
Mods: Stock engine/frame.
Other pertinent info: Removed "4th" engine/frame link at ~17,000 miles. Noted decrease in vibration to handlebars. Mileage from ~17,100 to ~17,750 all two-up. Reinstalled old front isolator after failure of new one and reinstalled 4th link.

- 1996 S2T

- about 15% 2-up riding, the rest solo w/ luggage

- no wheelies, stoppies etc.

- primarily sport touring. i.e. a day of highway to twisties etc.

- no motor or frame modifications

- history: original front isolator. Rear isolators replaced as part of recall work - probably around 10,000 miles.

- no other info.

Install the lastest and greatest "FRONT ISOLATOR" ...

Install a RIGHT REAR ISOLATOR PN L0505.9R
and a LEFT REAR ISOLATOR PN L0504.9L ...

2002 X1WL
2up every now and then, not much.
General riding w/ very ocasional wheelies.. nothing huge though.

E-ways and back roads are primary roads I travel.

Both rear isolators replaced when swingarm was powdercoated..(spidy's recommendation) they were still good.

Front Isolator went out last summer around 25K Miles

2000 M2-replaced front and rears when motor work was performed at about 15,000 mostly due to wifey complaints that it looked like the rear tire was moving back and forth. ride two up about 15% of the time, no more complaints. minimal wheelies stoppies, etc. previous owner may have been a stunter type tho...

Year and model = 99 S3

% of two up riding = 2%

Stunting = wheelies on occasion

Type of riding = Commuting, fun, and trips (no race or track days)

Mods = Race ECM

Original isolators and mileage is at 50K. Based on this recent topic, I will be doing all three isolators b-4 Sturgis.

#1;

97 S3 ("Mistress")

30%

occasional wheelies and stoppies

mix of slab and carving (50-50)

minor jetting, air cleaner, exhaust mods

all isolators original 30,000 miles, the bike is now in crates awaiting reassembly due to an engine problem! i have a 1250 kit and the frame stripped, just need time and a few more $$$. did have swingarm replaced under recall, it was one of the very few to actually crack!

#2;

98 S1W ("Wedgie" aka "The Thong")

20%

Occasional wheelies and stopppies

Mostly recreational riding, carving, very little slab

jetting, air cleaner, exhaust

don't know for sure, bought used (well cared for) from ferris, looks to be all original with 17,000 miles on it now

2000 S3T, 31k miles

solo riding only

no stunt riding
10% riding on crappy pavement

Mostly highway commuting, frequent curve chasing

Stock engine and intake, V&H muffler

Upgraded rear isolators before they failed. Rear locating pins had to be tapped further into the frame.
Front isolator is original.

Not. I'm not easy on the bike, but in no way is it being abused.

*the kind of riding you do primarily (touring, Interstate or curve chasing, etc.),
Mostly riding CO mountain curves (I knew this girl in Aspen... LOL!)

*modifications to your motor, frame, etc.,
Gutted airbox, rejet, updated Y muffler bracket.

*the history of your front and rear isolators, (both success and failures)
Original rears. On my FOURTH front! At 8K miles - seems like there is a problem with the part. They always tear at the lower rear.

*any other pertinent info that you think may have contributed to the success or failures of your isolators.
Perhaps repeated front iso failures may be due to hard braking (bedding front brake pads, to avoid hitting a deer) and/or hitting square edge bumps? Maybe. $43 a pop, the fourth one in 8K - this will be too expensive to keep unless someone figures out why fronts keep failing.
