thanks for asking! seems that i've finally turned the corner on pain and range of motion stuff, and am on the road to recovery. i even took a cab and got a manicure/pedicure saturday things are a LOT better. my dad flew back home saturday and i've been on my own since then. having him here was a big help with things around the house and walking the dog (an 80 lb black lab) i've upped my tylenol and advil consumption, but have been successful in getting my vicodin consumption down from 43 that first week (ack!) to about 3 a day. problem is that its harder to sleep now, because the vicodin both numbed the pain and caused drowsiness. back at work since last tues part-time (mornings) and getting rides to/from work from friends and taxicabs. will try driving again soon. i wish my condo didnt have a narrow, 90degree, downhill entrance into the garage because that takes a lot of steering wheel input doc says i need to take 8 weeks off. i say 4-6. we'll see. regardless, the 6 week mark is early august, so my plan is to get some tracktime in during a trackday weekend in august and run the CCS race in sept at autobahn if it all feels right... getting back on the track during a trackday will be really good for me to focus and work on laptimes and body position (and plain getting used to the bike again) without the race environment where you're on the track with folks that are 20 seconds a lap faster than you. the adrenalin/aggression factor is also a bit lower, so technically a "bit" safer, although there's more variability in experience and deviation from race line at a trackday. bike is supposedly in decent shape, though i havent seen it since the crash (and i'm sure i was pretty hazy looking at it). supposedly just bolt on parts (levers and pegs), going to try to repair the magnesium front fairing support, the bodywork and swingarm are uglier, but hey, its a racebike! it spent time on its head (tufts of grass in the transponder bracket which is bolted on top of the tail), and has broken parts left and right side, so it took quite a tumble. thanks for all the good wishes, publicly and privately - it was a big help and reading badweb certainly makes the time on the couch go faster. getting better, D |

Good to hear you're doing so well. To help with sleeping try 2 Benadryl. But if you are still having pain don't be afraid of the pain-killers. When the bad pain stops you should have no problem getting off of them. Let your doctor know, don't try handling it yourself. I've been there more than once myself. |

The doctors time-lines are usually pretty pessimistic/malpractice safe. I'd bet you're back doing gentle street riding in a couple of weeks. Just be careful to let your body tell you what you're ready to do. It will tell you if you're doing too much. |

something i've learned to be thankful for (other than great friends and family) through all this - wonderful health insurance and benefits. emergency room was 5 hours, 2 sets of xrays, 2 CT scans, IV drugs, IV fluids, IV dye for CT scan, and tylenol to take and vicodin to take home = $7000. i owe $75 for all that. i almost feel like i won the lottery! that does NOT include (so far) the additional insurance covered costs of: 5 additional doc visits, 3 more sets of chest x rays, physical therapy 3x/week which started this week, 5 bottles of prescription drugs of course, there's been some costs for me, copays and such for the insurance, but really quite minimal. other personal costs - super vitamins, super calcium pills, dog walker twice a day, my father flying in for 9 days, rides/cabs to work. STILL only able to sleep on the couch and go to work 4 hours a day (but still getting paid - also got paid for the 6 days i was out of work), going to try driving this weekend and full-time back to work next week. getting better, D |

Stay the course Dora, you're doing well all things considered. Broken ribs take forever to heal since they flex every time you breath. Also terribly painful. It does sound like you have good insurance. an awful lot of insurance carriers deny all claims that result from racing of any sort, and even try to deny street riding injuries because they classify it as a high risk activity. I've seen it happen more than once. Vincent Haskovec is a great example of this I hope the driving experiment goes well, and riding follows close behind! |
