I rode home in some rain for an hour or so and then ended up leaving my bike alone for a few days due to weather. When I wheeled it out of my garage (car hole) today, it felt "wrong". I figured it was just grit in the brakes but I noticed that the belt wa no longer "scary loose" but al the way over to "stupid tight". I took off the front sprocket cover thinking there was a crushed mouse in there or something. Nothing was wrong at all. Everything was shiney and clean. I drove it around the block and it seemed looser. I then drove it at a relaxed pace to a friend's house about 20 miles away and it gradually loosened up. By the time I parked it back home, it was fine. Do you think belts soak up water? This is one of the new XB12 belts. |

i know that in the case of tuber belts, the lower span can appear temporarily tight while the upper is ludicrous loose, or, as i like to say, "loosicrous". i know it makes little sense, yet i've observed this. stop offering rides to fat chicks....er....on your buell, that is.... |

Mine was tight on the top and the bottom. Also, there were no fatties involved. (that's what the pickup is for) |

Hey nate did you have to add or change any thing? other than the belt? fuupid quetion: did the axle slip. does the belt strech as it warms ? other than that, what you are asking is if the belt swells when wet? ( yes Alice some plastics and elastomers are slightly hygroscopic ) I can think of a couple of things that swell when wet, ya know - wood, paper, alkaseltzer... It's odd is all. Imagine what would have happened if it was on an XB12 like it was supposed to be. Those don't run scary loose. I'll check it before I go to work this morning. |

Nate, I think it's a case of your sprockets and belt getting stripped of any lubricant and causing the belt to ride high in the sprockets. Once it dried and you rode it, it corrected it's self.IMO........Charlie |

Take a long ride, get home park in a quiete spot, sit on cooler of beer-take beer out first...and listen, mine always sounds like it is relaxing-loosening back up, sounds wierd and it may actually be tightening, but it always sounded to me like the belt was relaxing/loosening... |

This morning before I took off for work, it was scary loose like I remember setting it. Perhaps the new belts swell up in the rain? I know that neither of my older belts did that. (Message edited by natexlh1000 on June 12, 2006) |

wouldn't swell enough to notice, esp. considering the kevlar ply....that would not swell |

I agree. Do think I am starting to lose a bearing or something? |

Update: I rode home in the rain last night and this morning the belt was tight again. It has to be the water. ODD. |

it's not the rain...at least as far as the eblt goes...now if something else is 'self-adjusting', via slippage or detritic buildup.... |

Next time you ride in the rain, when you get back put the bike on a rear stand. Spray the two sprockets with WD-40 where the belt runs, spin the wheel several times and I'll your belt is loose again....Charlie |

Ahh! that makes sense. The grey road grit is making the pulleys' little divots grip the belt? |
