Why you not got a softtail then Roger? stick with a conventional swingarm machine. softtails aren't for serious riders- the softtail technology exists strictly for appearance That sums it up nicley The way the dealer/salesman explained it to me(remember i have been working with this dealer for over 10 years, and we are freinds, and you dont screw your freinds, but it goes both ways) was the softtail was reverse engineered, instead of making the swingarm lighter they made it heavier(80 lbs) a springer front end????? you either hate your Buell or dont ride it much Stick with the Dyna line, there fun, they handle. there comfortable, and there affordable I love mine, as have most who have ridden it It handles(kinda) it stopps great and is comfortable, so it fits my need However i ride solo so as i have said about 10000 times, go ride them, and see what you like, get that, dont belive eveything you read, cause everybody is different R |

I'm with Tramp. The original FXR design was great. Worked really well. Still miss the 2 I sold over the years. But then, a Road King has always been near the top of my HD desires - even Melissa approves. Henrik |

A local shop had an FXRT in on trade, got to sit on it before they quickly sold it, felt nice. |

I put about 600 miles on Grndskpr's Dyna Sport over the Homecoming weekend, and all I can say is: It's a MAGNIFICENT motorcycle! Of course, the top-shelf suspension components and extra oomph from the 95" motor help, but the basic platform is very solid. If I were to own one (and that's a distinct possibility, given my recent "test ride") I'd have to make some minor adjustments to make it fit me: I think a slightly higher seat might do it, but the pegs might have to move back an inch or two as well. But I'd pick the Dyna over any of the Softails I've ever ridden. Having said all that, my '96 Road King is the best motorcycle I've ever owned, bar none. At 72,000 miles and counting, my total mechanical repairs to date have been a clutch and a clutch cable. It's a joy to ride, and about as fragile as a hammer. I plan to keep it forever. If the bottom end ever needs refreshing, I might slip a stroker crank in it; otherwise I think it's damn near perfect. rt |

Dyna or Road King. The Dyna family is really meant to be ridden. I've got an 02 FXD. Gone lotsa miles on it in the first couple of years we had it. Handles remarkably OK. Cruiser ride but basically just an overgrown standard - in my opinion. -Saro |

to whomever asked about the springer front ends.....they are much nicer to look at than they are to ride. if you own a buell now, the springer (probably) wont stop, turn, or handle in an acceptable manner to you (thats my opinion, from test riding one, i couldnt wait to get off it, i almost turned around before the demo ride started....i do think they are beautiful, but i dont want to ride one) D |

I used to have a springer front end on an old 1942 Knucklehead, worked great for me, wish I had it back, but that's sort of an entirely different bike than the ones today, so nevermind my ramblings. I would like to try a springer on a new Dyna though, but the shops around here just think I'm joking when I ask and point me towards the softtails that I won't have. Back to looking at the RoadKing, with a springer . |

I've ridden my dad's Springer Softail and his Springer hardtail and can not get used to how the front end feels. I really liked his Dyna SuperGlide when he had it, I also really liked his lowered 92 ElectraGlide. I've only been on his Road King with a sidecar so I'll withhold comment. I think I need a ride on the Dyna SuperSport. How about it Grndskpr, trade off with the FJR? |

I guess the new ones are OK(springer)How ever I had a gut full of them when they were the only thing they made never rode one that would not slap the tank damn near off. |

incidentally- you can do some outrageously cool things with regard to sporterizing dynas. somehwere, i have a pic that i rec'd from johnnylunchbox, one zany night at his cree-ub with ms. lunchbox, cochise, holly, and a vicious attack tabby..... it was an fxr with a buell front end, low bars, hi9gher sport shocks, etc.....lokked for all the world like a buell.....but a big twinge, at that. sooooo...mikexlr and i discussed sporterizing his dyna the same way- beauty of the dyna is: the anti-torsional interface betwixt the trans and the engine. nice machine for sporterizing. \if you like the fxr and the RK appeals to you, the reason's simple:the RK uses theFXR profile with a much wider stance. honestly: my next motorcycle will be another FXR. and, man- are they going cheaply, these days..... |

I was kicking tires over at a dealer last week and both FLH and FXD models caught my eye in the used bikes. I think the FLH line is where I might wind up eventually. I was a little curious about how the FLH and FXD compare as far as comfort and ride for longer distances. Are the suspensions and braking performance on those similar? The FLH looks like a clear winner in the long distance department. But the FXD looks like it has more happiness for the day rider that only occasionally goes long distance. Ah well, we'll figure it all out. So many choices, so little time... Jack |

Jack, IMHO you've just answered your initial question(s.) I agree, and have owned both, with your opinion on the FLH v. FXD. I so want a FXD that looks like Timbo's Sporty (can't find the pic right now, but probably the best looking motorcycle ever.) G2 |

always go with the fx over the fh series. the 'x' denotes xl (can you say sportster?)front end, which was the best tip that HD ever took from the daily riders of the period. the fx series are far superior machines due to their sleeker frames and less raked rear shock, and most importantly, their steeper rakes. i'd take an fx over an fl any day of the week, long or short distance. the fxrt is essentially the hazy big-twin s2t....those machiens cross such fuzzy boundaries it's tough to tell who's on first. for my knees, though, my next rides another FXRT |

So Captainplanet started this great thread, I wonder if he ever found a bike? I committed myself to buying a '97 FXD yesterday and will be picking it up tomorrow. Got it from the original owner. It is very clean, mildly personalized and really looks good and feels right to me. It has 49,000 on it and has fresh rings and a valve job. So do I have to leave now? Seriously though, I been sort of cruising a few of the H-D forums and have not found a BadWeb-like place yet. Nothing even close to it. If anyone knows of one I'm open to suggestions. Maybe we need to take up a collection and buy Blake a Dyna and a Road King? Then he could create a HogWeb. Jack |
