Thanks, that is half the price of the HD POS. What do they call this part? I have the big catalogue, but I will check the web site too.

Front motor mount for 5-speed models. A replacement front motor mount for all rubber-mounted 5-speed models (except Dyna Glide) from 1980-99

Todd; do those poly mounts come in different durometer?

Has anyone tried the aftermarket isolators?

No idea about the poly, I can't even figure how the 3 piece mount works....Or if it would work on a Buell.. On the HD application the engine sits on it not suspended by it....
I have an aftermarket mount on one of the S2's right now but don't have more than 500 miles on it

Thanks Todd. The "resting on" instead of "hanging from" the mount I'm sure makes a difference. Keep us posted on the aftermarket mount.

Henrik- it may not. In either case, the prevailing load on the isolator is downward.

The 3-piece mount is interesting but far more expensive. I don't quite see what it does that the one piece mount doesn't. At least it wouldn't fail due to the rubber "de-bonding" from the metal.

Damn. My front isolator crapped out I think.
I can see no cracks but the top and bottom are sticking out to much.
I'm thinking that the crack might be inside the area covered by the frame.

So, Should I go to the dealer and ask for a new one or what?
I'm really confused about the previous thread.
Should I go to the aftermarket?

Talked to a close friend over the weekend that works at a HD shop he tried the poly isolators and said they are crap....
His brother handles all the police bikes for the city of Pgh and said the front isolators crapped out ALL THE TIME of the HD police bikes that is why HD did the redesign but that doesn't help us much.....

Nate,

Daves is checking with the factory regarding these isolators.

The J&P cycle part, part number 4300140, appears identical to the Harley part for 1/2 the price (~$20 vs. $40). Don't know if anyone here has tried one. As to the other types of "improved" front isolators, the ones that have been tried haven't worked out.

So currently, there are no (good) options open to me?

Damn. My first one lasted at least 55,000 and this one lasted only 10,000 or so.
I guess I'll have to get a new bad one and wait for a better solution.

Well, you guys and all you doom and gloom talk went and did *my* front isolator in as well ;)

I started prep/maintenance on the S2 this weekend and lo and behold, the front isolator has a rip in it. Hopefully Daves will have luck getting some factory info.

Well, Court tells me there is no bad batch of isolators.

He checked for us and came up negative.

I might have to wuss out again and have the dealer do it.
I simply can't get at the bolts!

Is there a trick?

Sorry. I un-wussed out.

I removed it after some additional struggle.
Clipping the tiewraps on the cables allowed me to get in there.

Sure enough! the old one is killed and the new one from precision H-D is wrong.
The hole's diameter is too small. (made in CHINA too)

The old one had seperated from the two bolt flange almost all the way around.

Old one numbers: BARRY 28043

New wrong one numbers: LORD J-21920

Daves checked with the factory earlier in the thread and they said there was no "bad batch" of isolators. Court seems to have confirmed this opinion from the factory. OTOH, we have at least two nearly new front isolators which failed completely after fairly short usage/mileage. It seems awfully coincidental, but I'm sure it's possible.

Since they've gone to the trouble to design a new part for HD's, that would seem to be an acknowledgement by the factory that the isolator is a weak point. It would be nice to get some factory input on this issue.

I'm thinking I'll get one of the J&P Cycle isolators to keep as a spare, but it would be nice to have a more-permanent fix for this though.

Wow what a surprise, a company denying fault ...

Weeell, IMO that's not entirely fair ... : )

Granted there has been less than stellar moments, but IMO Buell did step up to and past the plate on many of the major tuber issues, and in general seem to move quickly when things pop up on the XBs as well.

Just a different perspective.

My front isolator failed with 16,500 miles and 10 years of service on the bike. My thinking is that the years more so than the miles did it in.

It could be that the stock on the shelves is getting old and drying out. Kind of like
new unused tires that have been on the shelf for 2 years. They won't last like fresh
tires do. Why do you think the track-side tire trucks bring really fresh race tires?

Rubber contains volatile chemicals and can dry out. Just like trailer tires in the sun.

I'd think a polyurethane type of isolator would be better, except for the noise when they
they "go dry". I've replaced rubber suspension bushings on a car, and they performed
better, until they start squeeking. It'll drive you nuts when it starts >600 miles from home.

Maybe the update is just a fresh batch?

Brian, my isolator that failed certainly didn't look old. It looked very new and "fresh". In fact, if anything I'd say it looked almost too soft inside (this is after it was shredded from riding it in a torn condition). It's apparent (and reasonable) that they don't last forever, but they should last longer than ~6 months and a couple of thousand miles. Hopefully there is no "bad batch" but just a couple of bad ones and we won't have similar problems with the replacements.

it's easy to take two or three data points, plot them on a graph, and declare the existance of an evil plot

anyone that's spent anytime in corporate amurica knows this stuff DOES happen, but extremely rarely, and, when it does, it almost always becomes obvious almost instantly --

I've no idea as to the cause of the recent failures - -and, while I'm certainly interested (I have a habit of keep bikes for a long time), I'm not even close to thinkin there's a cabal bent on selling Buellers bad parts and then covering it up

Diablobrian sez:

I agree, there is no bad batch (even though that is what my dealership's Service Manager (SM) called it initially). In fact, it looks like all of the new ones are bad...er, soft. I can feel the difference in the rubber with my own hands. After my SM and I examined them, he agreed that the reason he was having so many failures was because there was a design flaw. He told me I had two choices, buy another soft one, or install an old spare and wait and see if Buell fixed the problem later. I did the latter, since it makes no sense to lay out $40+ on another inferior one that is just going to do the same thing.

I am hoping that there will be enough backlash from Service Managers who are having to replace defective new parts under warranty, that eventually, the factory will get tired of hearing it and do the right thing and design another one...like they did for the big twin.

If there is a soft batch then it should be simple enough to qualify the analysis. Anony? What say ye?

I'm about to be replacing two of them in the coming weeks/months. I'd prefer the replacements to last at least as long as the originals.

I concur with Jim; the rubber in my failed isolator looked much softer than the rubber in my old isolator. I'll be glad to send my "new" failed isolator in for analysis if they want it.

The other replacement option of course is to buy the $20 J&P Cycles part.

This is kind of extreme, but I am thinking that we should all take these failed isolators back to the dealerships and demand replacements. Then when they give us a new one, and it fails, take it back fast and get it replaced under warranty before the 90 days expires. Keep doing that and I think the factory will get the message.

I would think that the factory would step up and redesign the thing so we wouldn't have to go to these lengths...and for some it would be a big inconvenience since their dealership may be very far away. This has been compounded lately with the closing of more Buell franchises at HD stores.

I know a guy who has the KTM franchise who would love to have a Buell dealership in his store. Why not?

This sucks I just had mine done under warranty at the shop(it only took them 1week) and it to looks very soft compaired to the old one, on this new one I can see it smooshing when I move the bike around or side to side. If it was designed to be soft and weak then I guess its not a "bad batch" more a like bad part design.
Well I plan on putting on a few thousand more miles this summer so well see how fast this one fails Im really hoping it wont. To those of you who had replacement part failures how fast as in miles did they come apart?

I have an update regarding my front isolator, but I'm gonna post it in the KV in line with recent admonitions from our BadWeb administrators.
