managed to get a couple hours of fishing in after work last nite what a blast! almost every cast produced a fine young crappie. some of the little buggers put up a hell of a fight. several were well over a pound!
i used a vampire rapala #7 floating with a slow retrieve just under the surface and it was driving them crazy! also i'm happy to say i got them all back into the water in seconds so i can catch them again some other time!

Nice...
using an ultra-lite?
If not try one, it will make the crappie seem like swordfish.

Is it called a crappie because anything caught in SoCal is crappy eating?

Wow!!! First I've heard of Crappie being bad eating. Good beer batter over a open pit fire. Awesome. Love a good shore lunch.

Crappie is excellent when fried,,,cold water/winter crappie is even better. The further south you go the more they're referred to as white perch,,,in NC they're still crappie.

They're still called crappie in mid-west Georgia. The best eating game fish you can catch around here.

Probably depends on one's accent.
I've called them croppys, unless I was fishing for trout then they become crappies because they keep taking the bait before the trout have a chance.

I think I'm going fishing this weekend.

i was using light tackle and they were giving a heroic fight! i started calling them crappies from reading in-fisherman magazine, around here they call them calico bass but, i don't think they're even in the bass family! i believe they're in the perch family. nice pic dana that's the bugger although they are a lot darker around here, black top with the spots and a yellowish belly.

The crappie got its name from the French-Canadian name for the fish, they called it a "crapet" which in French sounds like "craw pay" with the emphasis on the second word.

The perfect fish for younger fisherpeople, and fine eating little buggers too. Unfortunately they run a little small up here in Maine because of the colder waters and shorter seasons.

I fish a local lake that is clear enough that you can watch them on their beds during the spawning season and even watch them attacking lures and baits. I love to bat a fly (take your choice, deer, horse or moose) out of the air and then watch the crappie go for it when it hits the water.

they don't get much bigger than 2# here either, they average about 3/4# to a 1# it's always exciting to get a nice 1 3/4+ pound, bigger than your hand type o slab
hehe, now i'm gonna start calling them craw pay's.
