I think my steering bearing is a bit loose but I don't notice any "lumpiness" in the movement.
Is it OK to adjust the bearing's tension?
They are tapered, right?
Kinda a newbie question but I always had the dealer do it for me before.

Lift bike so front end is off the ground a little.
Loosen lock bolt.
Loosen steering bearing bolt.
Tighten steering bolt to torque spec.
Tighten lock bolt.
Let bike down.
You could do it every day if you wanted.
Check your service manual BEFORE you take my word for it, I've only done my XB9S.

tuber's don't have a torque spec, if memory serves -- something along the lines of tighten until it take X pounds to move the fork . . . . . . .

careful, though -- it's easy to over torque and create a nice detent in your steering ;-}

"Tighten steering bolt to torque spec"

and the specs would be...

*Turn front wheel to full right lock

*Hook a spring scale into the hole in the front axle. With scale 90 degrees from fork leg, pull front wheel to center position.

*It should take 4.5-6.5 lbs to pull front wheel to center.

PS...don't forget to disconnect the clutch cable at the handlebar first.
