Whoever turned this thread into "Honda V4 conquers America" has a lot to answer for

In the early eighties the v4 Hondas were HOT!
The v65 magna held the title of worlds fastest production bike,
The interceptors were dominating the track, and the Sabre
made a pretty strong standard or even sport tourer. It was
a pretty good run for Honda.

Of course we all know the Buell rules America now!

Ah em, down the quarter maybe, but it was not the 'fastest' as in top speed. In the V65 case, it's marketing hype referring to Cycle's drag strip testing times of 1983.

Over here the motorcycle press use to harp on about Pee Wee Gleason running 9's on a GPZ900 when they first came out, but I can find no reference to this anywhere. Shame.

V-4 tech is old hat. Here is my favorite though. http://www.craig.howell.net/legend06/index28.htm We don't need no stinking hondas

The RC51 was brought out as an alternative to other liter bikes but has never been a huge seller.

The RC51 is a V-twin...not a V-4

Glitch:
interesting piece on the nova,
I wonder whats lurking at HD in the corners
that we don't know about

all of the plumbing for the nova would have been a conflagaration for sure

with buell in the black I wonder if there are buell specific motors that are in the works ......

Didn't Suzuki try the rotary on year? Fricken huge was the best they could do I believe. Bike was as wide as it was long.

Yeah but Suzuki is weak and Buell is strong.
Suzuki is evil and Buell is good.
Suzuki is ugly and Buell is pretty.

All kidding aside, you are right Wankel engines are a plumbing nightmare.

(I still don't care they are cool)

I've heard Buell wants to resurrect rotary engine technology.

http://www.rotaryrecycle.net/W2000.asp

....or possibly the gas turbine.....

....note the Buell exhaust system??

The Suzuki RE5 was a pretty neat bike for its time, and it wasn't so huge. A friend of mine has one.

Here's a fast 750 V4

Y'all get your minds out of the Honda gutter! Here are a couple of examples of one of my favorite V4s:

Saab Sonnet

Saab 2

Kind of a Buell-like story of its original conception, too:
"In the 1950s Rolf Mellde suggested that Saab should make a small number of open-top two seater sport cars as racing regulations did not allow Saab to tune their cars as much as was needed to be competitive. Rolf Mellde designed the car himself and in utter secrecy built it in a barn in Åsaka outside Trollhättan. Only a very limited number of people working on the project knew about it and was done in their spare time. The total cost of the project was 75000 Kronor."

HellBuelly J
"It is poison--rank poison to knuckle down to care and Rice burners. They must come to us all, albeit in different shapes--and we may not escape them--it is not possible--but we may swindle them out of half of their puissance with a stiff upper lip and a steady right hand on the throttle of our Buell..."
--Mark S2-T(wain) in a letter to Will XBowen

Not to split hairs or anything, but the first Sonnet, originally a Saab (project) 94, later called Sonnet I of which only six were built, was powered by a DKW 750cc two stroke engine. That's the car that Mellde designed.

The later Sonnet's, II and III, were Sixten Sason's creations. The early II's were still powered by the DKW two stroke until 1968 I believe, which is when Saab introduced the German Ford Taunus 1500cc V4 power plant to the Sonnet.

I believe the pic's above show a later Sonnet II with the V4 1500cc motor and the Sonnet III which had the later Taunus V4 1700cc power plant.

Nice cars. I've had a Sonnet III in my Workshop some years ago, and it was fun to drive. Our friend Bomber has fond memories of owning one.

Thanks for bringing some quality V4's to this thread Bty
