I've owned a few, just sold a TDi Discovery, my nephew has a sI swb in restoration & a sIII swb on lpg as a daily driver, bro in law has a sI swb & a sIIa lwb diesel. What do you need to know? Have a look on the owners club websites too, they're even more fanatical than Buell owners. | ||

And they drive bloody awful. Can't imagine what they're like to sail in lol. Did you know a Land Rover sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from England to NY about 50 years ago? Wonder if Court has the pic's of it in NY Harbour? Rocket | ||

Actually both (petrol & diesel) are imported into the US. Like they say about the Land Rover diesels, "faster than molasses, but no match for ketchup." The Series III picture that I posted is a 2.25 petrol. | ||

Thanks Buellgirlie!  I've been in the market for a "Landy" for quite some time. Even though my original plan was to fix up my 1983 Jeep Cherokee and make that my "lousy weather driver", I couldn't pass up this deal. I will still keep my Cherokee and make that my "long term" project. As soon as I get the LR, my 1997 Ford F150 will go up for sale. | ||

I've got a (very) modified '52 S1. Originally an 80" wheelbase, 2.0 F head. Now a 96" wheelbase trek special with a mercedes 2.4 Turbodiesel, 4 Speed automatic, etc, etc, etc  FWIW, Myself, and Jim Young from Connecticut were about the first 2 guys in N.America to do the MB conversion ( ~10 years ago now)- its pretty straigtforwards, and unlike the rover diesels, parts are readilly available in the USA. My site is currently down for a rebuild, but you can see Jims rig at www.seriestrek.com I wont name specifics, but if you plan on doing a lot of work to it ( custom work) be aware that a LARGE number of the series rover guys can be elitist snobs - if its not OEM, or made by one of the 2, or 3 very established companys, its c**p in their opinion, and they wont talk to you. On the flip side of that, there are also quite a few 'rover specialists' who have some very questionable business practices - here I WILL name a name - DO NOT, under any circumstances do business with RoverPark Boys ( edmonton, Alberta). Friend of mine was pricing parts out, and found out that, amongst other things, after giving him a quote, RPB phoned around the suppliers, and told them no to deal with my friend. | ||

Having owned: 1 BSA, 2 Triumphs, 3 Matchlesses and 2 Nortons, I feel qualified to offer this bit of insight: People who own British vehicles work on them all week long so that on Sunday, they can ride (drive) over to their friend's house to work on them. | ||

Neil tells me it's fast and pulls like a train. The tyres aren't ideal for road use but he says she doesn't have the typical Land Rover steering waggle, and she's rather pleasant to drive.  Rocket | ||

Years ago in Atlanta, a beat up Land Rover came up up behind me on 285. Stenciled on the front bumper backwards (so it could be read in a rear view mirror) were the words, "NO BRAKES!". I thought it was hilarious. | ||

Ulendo & Rocketman - I do say that's an interesting engine conversion for the Land Rover. Another interesting one is a Chevy 4 cylinder - http://www.fourfold.ca/LR_FAQ/Series/FAQ.S.options.RDconversion.html and the Perkins Prima Diesel - http://www.nhua.co.uk/conversion/perkins.htm. I almost bought a LR with a Perkins, but that particular LR was sold when I inquired about it. |
