I don't recall the size but if you are near a Harbor Freight tool store, they have a kit that goes on sale at least once every couple months that has those mamoth sizes and is a 1" socket set.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=3994

It's good to have SAE and metric, comes in a nice case

Yea, but i prefer a littler bit better quality tool when working on a fairly expensive nut
Not knocking HF, but when i only need one or 2 odd sizes, i try and buy the best tool i can afford
I "think" its 1 1/2
Not sure however, no where have i found the compesator nut size

Roger, it is a 1 1/2" socket. I just called a friend who has his own repair shop and asked.

Thanks John, i just got back from a quick run home, and we just happen to have a Proto 1 1/2 impact socket
One other thing, I "think" its reverse thread
Am i correct??

Roger, according to my 2006 H-D Touring Models service manual the compensating sprocket nut is indeed 1-1/2", removed in a counterclockwise direction with aid of HD-41214 Primary Drive Locking Tool.

the clutch hub mainshaft nut is 1-3/16", removed in clockwise direction, also with aid of the Primary Drive Locking Tool.

comp. sprocket nut torque is 75 ft-lbs, then additional 45 to 50 degrees.

clutch hub mainshaft nut torque is 70-80 ft-lbs.

ps: for what its worth, H-D recommends breaker bar, then heat, then impact wrench if the comp. sprocket nut is difficult to remove. quote: "If unable to loosen sprocket nut with breaker bar after applying heat, use air impact wrench as the last alternative."

Did that last night

As far as a breaker bar, i dont trust them
Example
Wife used to own a 99 Dodge Avenger
Had a flat, so i went out with my trusty 4 way, no go
Being lazy, i just pulled out a log piece of pipe otherwise known as a breaker bar, and prceded to snap 3 studs
Got un lazy and brought out my electric impact gun, and off they came
Again thats my experience, and will let you know how it went in the AM
thanks again

Roger,

I was going to tell you the size but everyone else jumped in first.

When I removed the engine nut off the S1 I only used the Electric Impact Gun.

Came off in about 2 seconds of squeezing the trigger, I'm with you on the breaker bar as there is way too much of a chance to twist off something.

the "something" you would be twisting off in this case would be the end of the crankshaft, no? not likely, i'm thinking. it would be interesting to know why H-D recommends an impact wrench as last resort.

Twist it off, No, however i could see a lower quality tech stripping the threads due to a lack of knowledge and a great forum like this, just a guess however
Now, something to consider is Harley while selling a good bike also equipts them with torx screws made of cheese, ever have one strip out, while i always like to follow the rules, some times, just some times there not right
But thats me

Not having had an impact wrench in the past I've always kept a small sledge or large claw or ballpeen hammer handy when using breaker bars. Apply tension and then gently to firmly whack the bar, kind of works like an impact wrench at times. One time on a different application it took someone standing on the breakerbar and the full force of a larger than normal sledge hammer to break the nut in question loose from said machinery. I think I'll check into them electric impact wrenches.

my guess on the impact gun is that everything connected to the nut (crank, rods, pistons, bearing, fasteners) can not possib ly be made more happy by the repeated blows from the impact gun -- breaker bar, with a steady force imparted to the parts would be kinder

just a guess, based on writing manuals for fork lift trucks back in the Harding administration

Thats fantastic, helps a bunch, at least i now know what i did was correct(i have to buy a service manual tonight and stop randomly taking crap apart like i know what i am doing)
Maybe i will try the bar first and see if i can make it work

I've got all those tools in my garage already, I'd have been happy to bring them over, you only had to ask,

it would be interesting to know why H-D recommends an impact wrench as last resort.

So i spent a few hours at MY favorite HD shop talking to a few well informed and actually all around great guys(Sam and Mike at IL harley) They are not my local dealer, however they are worth the trip
Why
WEll when asked why does Harley recomend NOT using the Impact gun:
"Well Rog, in the old and not so old days there have been times when the repeated use of the impact gun caused the magnets on the rotor to come off, you do realize there glued on"
Really, wow never would have thought of that
After saying this the second thing was even more interesting
"even so, especially on a comp nut, use the impact, otherwise your not getting it off, OH and dont forget the heat"

OK so theres a resonable explination, parts in stock(except i am cheep and now have to wait 3 days for a different part to come in) that will work a a little better, and cost 1/2 of the HD parts
So there you go, impact seems to be OK, a little heat makes it a bit easier, and off she came
Update with pics and why i am doing this once i drill out a few rivets
thanks again guys

Oh and before i forget
Il Harley was happy to help me out on a few other parts, HOWEVER, they did not have the Black football shaped air cleaner cover
SOOOooo
If any of you folks happen to have a spare take off BLACK foot ball shaped crinkle balck or even smoth black stock air cleaner cover
Let me know, how much and include shipping
Long story how that got lost, but not a huge deal, i have something for the mean time
