Chasespeed- IF I were you (and I'm not) I would look hard at the world situation right now and think about what you have in the Military vs. what's on the outside. I do miss it and I was making great money. However, I am making more on the outside but it's because of what I did on the inside that helped me on the outside. I like knowing that my retirement check is coming every month. Everything on the civilian side is not what it's cracked up to be. I'm in a union job which absolutely sucks (the union part of it). I love my job but there is always something at whatever job you have.
You know what they say about the grass being greener on the other side.......it still needs mowin'!

Chase (and Sean,) Read what Odie said about The Retirement check,,,,,it's very nice knowing it'll be there. That gives you some flexibility.

I was just a poor old enlisted guy so mine's a bit scrawny compared to Mr. Odie

Taxman noted:

Yeah, that's the basic economic prob, plus the artificially high prices. What goes up must come down.

So it looks like the economy as a whole is looking pretty good.
You may want to look into relocating if you see things getting worse for you.
It was for me.
That's why we came to Atlanta.

You was, I still am a poor( i. e. broke as hell), enlisted guy... the money SUCKS on this side of the fence, I would be alot more comfortable making what an officer does, that's for sure...

But, I know I need to look at things.. In fact Odie(if you were an officer)}, your retirement check is probably more than my pay NOW, and I am an E-5

Anyway...

Chase, I was just joshing Odie -- he's a retired WO and deserves everything x 2 that he's getting. Those Hawk drivers carry their balls around in wheelbarrows.

I can't tell you what to do and I know what you speak of. I was a E-5 with 3 kids and my wife in college -- dude,,,,it so sucked. We got past it but it wasn't much fun. I never once considered giving it up because I was too busy digging it. Absolutely love The United States Army,,,,still do and still miss it.

There's a number of things that you can do on your end to make it better/different.

Chase- I'm with ya. I started out as an E-1 in '83. We weren't making squat! I had a new car and I could just make the payment, insurance, gas/oil and have a little bit to party on. Barracks living and a mealcard baby!! It does seem the more you make the more you spend so the less you have! If you are considering staying in I would look at becoming a Warrant or going to OCS. I was almost ready to go to OCS but after being an E-1, then a Warrant Officer Candidate, then a WO-1 I really didn't want to go to the bottom of the totem pole once again. If you are going to stay do something you get paid better for and can enjoy. (not saying you don't enjoy what you do now!)

G2- you flatter me....

Chase I can only say that I am glad I stuck it out. My retirement is what will take the edge off of loosing this job. At least the house payments will be made. Now if I can get the garden to grow we might eat.

All the Macro indicators suggest the US economy is trucking along quite nicely.

the truth is Indicators don't tell the whole story.More people are in debt, forclosures have risen the last 2 years and yes more people have jobs but lower paying jobs.

People put THEMSELVES in debt.
Credit cards are EVIL and should only be used in emergencies.
So many people give themselves over to stupid lifestyles that they can't actually afford.
My sister and many of my friends and co-workers are guilty of this.
The only thing I am in debt for now is my mortgage and I seem to the the only man in my generation like that.

NOTHING tells the WHOLE story about an economy. The question was about the ECONOMY with a capital E. The fact is, the macro economy is doing very nicely.

If you are selling buggy whips, your economy is not doing so well.

Personal debt levels in many ways are irrelevant, except to the person with the debt.

Nate, with the exception of car payments, whcih will be paid off within 2 years), and rent, I have no debt, just not worth it..

Odie, our WO program is ALOT different than the Amry's... we HAVE to be an E-7 first, THEN put in for it, though its easier to get select as a Line Officer, than a Warrant..

I know they are/were doing the Blue to Green thing for a while, and that thought has crossed my mind a couple times.. I dont know as of yet..yeah its a shame to throw away the time I have invested, but, my ability to advance is nil, as I have NEVER worked within my rating(MOS). And before anyone says anything, I have not had the ability yet(7 years), to select soiemthing that would allow professional development(though I know a few here know that)...I keep gettign sent to interesting posts, BUT, its not helping me make E-6...

Chase- the Green and the Blue seem to be more similar than most think when it comes to the everyday Joe in the trenches and how he's treated.....

The homogenized battle force -- CENTCOM -- is made up of skilled warriors from all the services. My last NCOER (since renamed to something else) had sig's from a Army CSM, Navy Master Chief, USAF Colonel,,,and we all dressed exactly alike. The new sterile armed forces ; )
