I just sold my 2000 M2. I haven't ridden it since I got the Uly, but it hurts to let it go. I put 55,000 miles on it, riding in all kinds of weather; in temps ranging from -2 F to 104 F. I fell down in an unexpected snow storm. I rode it over the summit of Independence Pass. I got a ticket for Drag Racing on the street in Springfield, IL (I lost to an S3 ridden by my best friend) from a sherrif who told us that we were being stupid. I agreed, 'cause we were. I had it set up for traveling. It had Flanders touring bars, a Throttlemeister cruise control, and S3 saddlebags. I had three seats for it; the stock seat, the low seat, and my favorite, the custom seat with the blue piping. I had converted it from belt drive to chain drive, then back to belt with the new Hybrex belt. It was on its fifth Showa shock. (I still think that Showa is Japanese for sh*t) That bike took me to Daytona, the Peoria TT, the Syracuse Mile and the 20th Anniversary. My cane fit on it like it was designed in from the factory (thanks to a suggestion from Cap at Daytona 2000). I had hoped to hang on to the bike, and maybe get some engine work done and use it close to home. Instead, I let it go for a lot less than book value. The guy who bought it is a friend that I've known for years, and he knows exactly what he is getting. I know he won't use it for a chopper, or do anything stupid with it. The money I got is going to allow my 15 year old daughter to achieve one of her dreams. She'll get to go hiking and rock climbing in the Rockies with other kids from her school. It's something that she'll remember for her life. Selling the bike was the right thing to do, but it kinda sucks letting it go. I just needed to vent. |

A sacrifice for the greater good is a noble thing. Make sure your friend keeps it in the family here and joins badweb. |

Crusty- I know how you feel. A neighbor kid wants to buy my '99 S3. He hasn't ever ridden before so I told him that he had to take an MSF course before I even let him on it. He learned riding my DR. I have been reluctant to sell it because I've talked to too many guys who regret selling that special bike. The only reason I'm considering it is because I'd like to get one of the newer Buells. I'm kind of partial to the City X. Just like you I have a lot of great memories on that bike. I told him that if I sold it to him that I'd want first rights to buy it back if he ever decides to sell it. I just realized that it has a special drain plug on it to. I think I'll pull it off and keep it for memories. Thanks John, Mike |

I know what you're talking about too. I want a XB12X so bad but I know I'll have to sell one of my bikes to do it. It's like trying to figure out which of your dogs to shoot. I chose not to buy a new bike this year instead. |

Well Crusty, Now you have to ride the Uly to Newfoundland like you were supposed to come over on the M2. I think the Uly would be much better suited to the trip. |

Aw crusty you are a good man... Do you have either of the low seat or the seat with the blue piping or did they all go with the bike? |

Crusty, Your daughter will not only remember this trip, but in time will really realize the sacrifice you made to give her this gift. Your daughter is lucky to have a great dad like you. Bikes will come and go, but what we teach our children by our example will stay with her always. I'm sure the Uly will help you pass the time. And what a great bike for 2 up riding. |

I understand your pain. I too thought of selling my M2, but for now I still have it and use it as a commuter and the Uly as the Tourer. But I have to agree, if anyone of my children were in the same boat, I would sell it. |

Something stuck with me from a piece of fiction I read years ago that I remember in times like this -- basically along the lines that while driving off the "vehicle" didn't stutter, stall, or look back. No matter who's driving it won't get any better gas mileage or go any faster. You don't need us to tell you you did the right thing. We just respond to let you know your vent didn't land in empty space.... BTW -- Time to make it final and update your profile. (I've been called harsh...) |

Hey, can I ask if you remember on the Select seat with the blue piping, was the ridge for the passenger part the same distance back, or was it any farther back (compared to stock seat.) My Corbin is like 1.5 Inches farther back, but I don't like the heft of the Corbin. But I need the farther back to keep my knee off the air cleaner. I was wondering about the Select seats, I see them for sale sometimes. Also, can you tell me more about those Flanders bars, if you still remember... What model, or size were they? Do you sit upright, or lean forward? My M2 has S3T/Blast bars but they are still about an inch or two too low for me. Nothing like talking about a bike you used to own to get you over it. I just sold my Yamaha XV920R that I had for 21 years, so that I could afford my used M2. So I sort of know how you feel. |

Just buy another M2 when you have the cash. They can be had for $3000.00 if you look. Mike |

Nice move Crusty....I never posted after Daytona on what kinda time I had while there....I'm not usually very verbose after posting pics(I hope my pics will speak for me!)But I have to say meeting the new faces while down there...hanging with the old faces both there and at the track and getting to be with people with the same interests and experiences as I , was one of the best experiences I've had in a long time. You Crusty are a GEM of a person and I enjoyed the little time we spoke.Sammy and Nick....what can I say?You were the most gracious hosts , doubly so for what you were going through at the time , David Gess....I felt instantly comfortable talking with you , I'd enjoy spending a week talking stuff with you...I understand your larger than life reputation now(more stories on Isle of Man needed!!)Blake and the really cool redhaired guy,and Buellgirlie and Charlie!!! and of course the Inimitable Court ,thanks, and to Southern Marine...(oh well, tents break!)and on and on and on....I'm sorry I can't remember all the names but I did enjoy EVERY SINGLE PERSON I spoke with and will always remember with Joy my first visit to Daytona....Thaanks to you all and I WILL get you a CD of those pics as soon as I can...see ya and THANX!!! PS....I need to say THANKS to Erik and his Better Half....Your responsible for giving us this bike to Rally Around...you have brought SO MANY people together with your enthusiasm and genuiness(is that a word??)that I hold YOU responsible for all these GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!THANXXXXX!! |

Thank you everybody for all the kind words. I just needed to vent on the passing of a memorable bike. My daughter's happiness will always come before any of my possessions. Charlotte, I gave the buyer everything relating to the M2. The seats, spare muffler, two leaky shocks, the chain drive sprockets, extra handlebars, steel swingarm, etc. He got one hell of a deal. (and he knows it) Jayvee, The seating position of the select seat is the same as the stock or low, as far as the distance back from the fuel tank. Part of the reason I didn't care for the Corbin was that it moved my butt back, and it made for a longer reach to the bars. The Flanders bars are a little taller and a little wider than the S3-T bars. I liked them a lot better for long road trips; like the trip to Colorado I took last summer. Flanders calls them "Buell bars" (odd name, eh?) and they're listed on their website and available from Drag Specialties, so any dealer can get them for you. |

Crusty is a good man, and because of that, I think that somehow, someday the Karma Wheel is going to serve him up the S3T that he has always been trying to make his M2 into. `Till then, his wife and kids and his NEW ULY will just have to do. Oz |
