A couple of times now I have burnt a hole in my jeans. One time it was actually flaming from touching the header. So my question is how do I solve this? already ruined three pairs of jeans this way. Can I use muffler tape? How much will it cost to tape them and can I do this to a stocker and not have to change anything else/void warranty? Any help would be appreciated or maybe this is something I should just accept. |

There have been a couple of people who complained of burned pants. I myself think it's a physical impossibility to touch the pipes while you're riding long enough to burn your pants, but obviously people are doing it. Try a search, I looked, but can't for the life of me find the previous thread...Anyone else? |

I wrapped mine to keep the pipes from burning the fiberglass after watching that happen to new paint on the race bike. There was a thread with links on the XB board a little while ago. the eastwood company http://www.eastwoodco.com/index.jsp and Summit racing http://www.summitracing.com/ seem to come up a lot. You need 50ft of your choice of color wrap, 2 inches wide. a package 8(?) of the wrap ties, or you can go with safety wire, or hose clamps. You may, or may not need to "rotate" the motor to gain access to the rear header. Wet the wrap. wrap tightly. secure the ends. Run the motor outside to burn the wrap in. It will smoke and stink. After wrap has burned in and cured silicone spray may be applied to preserve the wrap and avoid moisture damage. |

I found one of these on ebay. I just liked the way it looks more than anything. American Sportbike has a can styled one.

The wrap has downsides--it deteriorates from UV and moisture and it traps moisture against the pipes, hastening their corrosion. |

How could one possibly burn their pants on XB headers while riding? Wearing M C Hammer style genie pants? |

Burnt pants...funny, but i thought they had that all squared away with the XB's. Older M2's and S1's i can see, but XB's? |

Today I burnt my glove on my rear header (bracing against the frame to pull my brake pedal out a little). Same header has some of my daughter's shoe on it. Year and a half ago I burnt my forehead on my front header gonna call HPC Monday morning, I tried today but they are closed for the weekend, should be a pretty quick turn around since they are only about 12 miles from home 801-501-8303 (Message edited by littlebuggles on March 26, 2006) |

hey i caught on fire on my s2 and suffered third degree burns,, that was with a wrapped header,, it dosent eliminate the heat,, but keeps the internal pipe temperatures up so the gases flow faster. better scavenging.. i think court double wraps his header.. this may help.. i pulled mine and replaced with one i polished.. it seems to stay cooler and put the stock heat shield back on and it seems to help a lot.. but personally think that polishing them helps.. i have a race header on the way and as soon as its in it getting polished,, and not just for the looks.. just my 2 cents,, |

My story is truth Mr. Grumpy. Aaron, I remember reading that about you catching fire a while back, didn't you have a passenger at the time? My pipes are polished, don't know if that reduced heat or not, it was one of my first projects when I got the bike. Looking forward to the HPC treatment though, I guess I just get too close to my bike. -Mike |

Ceramic coating on the header should make it cooler to the touch. Mike |

yeah i had a passenger on the back,, turned onto a side street. stopped the bike. ask her to please get off.. she confusingly looked at me so i ask her to please go around the bike and put my leg out.. she slowly walks around the rear of the bike to exclaim your on fire and proceeds to stomp me out.. both the buell and my 62xlch have embossed a couple pairs of jeans..... |

I've done a couple of rainsuits, but it doesn't sound the same. Liar, liar, rainsuit's melting,..... Nope sounds more like something from The Wizard of Oz! & speaking of The Mighty Ozz (may his shades be forever dark) It was with him last year that I did one of the rainsuits, coming through the Dragon in the wet (fun). I am deeply indebted to Ozz also for introducing me to "Waffle House". |

Blake you are not the first to laugh, it was kinda embarrassing to explain the injury, most folks gave a giggle and a shake of the head. (I was parking the bike at the airport for a day and didn't want to lose it. I looped my cable through the back wheel and and when I pulled it forward to lock to my disc brake I lost my balance and tapped my noggin. Looked just like the carpet burn I had on my forehead a few years back - flubbed back flip. Ouch, got pictures from my brother's wedding to prove that...) I'm laughing just thinking about it. |

I can think of even worse places to be burned by a hot header pipe. There's a fellow at Central H-D/Buell who might have risked a burn like I am thinking. He apparently won the bet though. He's a real hellBuellie. |
