Yep, Ooooops indeed. I was in the Helo squadrons, 3 to be exact. We flew Huey's and Cobra's. I was on a cax one year and saw some good video of a Tomcat engaging 6 targets at the same time. He was far outside of visual range but the radar picked them up. He fired all 6 missiles and split left and climbed to 40,000 feet. All 6 boogies splashed and he rolled down to a visual. I was truly jaw dropping moment to know he engaged, killed the enemy and he never even saw the planes. It think it was an omen for things to come (can you say pred. drone) |

that was a really cool video. the F-14 were developed and mostly built about 20 minutes a way from my house. when i was younger, my dad use to take my brother and i out to the grumman facility in riverhead(long island, new york)on the week ends to watch them take off and land. some real good memories. thanks for posting that Micah, you made my day. here is a pic of my bike, taken out by the memorial to the old grumman field.

The big 'Cat was the coolest jet fighter ever made. But, hey, I'm a little biased. |

I used to leave the black hole for lunch and park across the street from NAS Dallas to watch the F-14 boys do touch and go's. Pretty invigorating having them fly straight overhead only a couple hundred feet up, if that. Very cool aircraft for sure. Awesome video too! Thanks for posting that link Micah. |

The Tomcat is like the Ferrari Dino. No matter how much time has passed the design still looks good. |

The pilot doing the knife edge pass was Dale Snodgrass. Those of you who do alot of airshows might have heard his name before, as his main job for a few years was flying the Tomcat at airshows. Somebody has to get the hard jobs. He retired within that 30 day grounding so I think he was cool with it. |

Favorite Tomcat memory... Oshkosh.. was it 1985??? Missing man formation with all the Grumman Cats. Wildcat, Hellcat , Bearcat, Tigercat. Tomcat in the slot. Wings swept back, but still hanging with the WWII birds at not more than, what, 200 knots? Large deck up angle. Straight overhead in the bright sky, all you can see is the distinct planforms of these great fighters. Time to exit up. Cue the noise, light the fires. We're goin vertical. |

Interesting note about Dave Snodgrass Tripper. Thanks. That was probably a very special farewell gesture buy an impending Gray Eagle. I'm going to add a note to that photo in my files, I had a couple of people try to convince me it had to be a doctored photo. I spent quite a few months on bird farms between 1969-1975 and there was no doubt in my mind that the bird was capable of that and that a pilot might do it. Here is the USS Nimitz doing something that not many people could imagine without actually experiencing it. It is really spooky if you're below decks with no visual horizon for reference:
