Yeah, it's an old topic, but a refresher can't hurt.

I received this email after an auction I bid on closed. (2003 XB9R, low miles, my last bid was $28xx, reserve wasn't met by close at $35xx)

auction

Problems
Too good to be true. ($2800 for a good condition 03 XB?)
Email is from individual, not generic "Member@eBay.com"
Email says to reply directly - not go through eBay
Email directs me to look at the actual closed auction - which when I go there does not change to "Second Chance"
Email is from generic redirector that tracerts to Los Angeles but who's DNS records are hosted in South Africa

Other issue is the seller had no sales for 1 year before selling the bike, but that's not a red flag, just a yellow.

I responded to the email and got this:

>>>>>
Hello,

I am in a vacation in Europe, England, with my wife, so I cannot stay online as much as I usually do, however the item is located in the states.
After all, this turned out to be rather a business trip now. I have begin this offer because the winner of my auction withdraw his bidding and was rejected.
There are a lot of bidders who bid on the auctions for fun and i hope you are serious and we can make a clear deal.
To start the official transaction in a very protected way I will need your full name and address for shipping:

First name:
Last name:
Address:
City:
Zip Code:

After that, ebay will contact you via email and you'll receive important guidelines and instructions from them. Ebay will tell you how do I want to be paid (probably they'll choose a wire transfer because I'm updating my paypal account). In the case that you are not satisfied with the item, you will have a full refund!
If you want to buy the item please email me back with the requested details, full name and complete address, so we can get the deal started.
After payment I will arrange the shipping, you'll have a fee ship and you'll receive the item in 2-3 days.

Best Regards,
Alex.
>>>>>>>

Problems
Bad english/grammer
Contradictions ("withdraw his bidding and was rejected")
nonsense (his vacation turned into "business" because of this auction?)
WIRE TRANSFER MENTIONED!

Various other crap.

Be careful out there folks.

But if you see an XB for a song (esp rideable w/ salvage title) let me know!

Good call there Josh. I hate "the bay" and refuse to do business with such tomfoolery. I do enjoy their free "price check" service though. NUTS

I got an email that looked like it was from ebay last week about something I had sold and not sent to the buyer. It was even from blah member at member@ebay.com. I was like WTF? I hadn't sold anything for quite a while, so I clicked on the link to see what was up and I just now got my account reactivated. When I went to log in off of the email I gave them my password. What a bunch of ass clowns. Go rip somebody else off.

Olin,

I'm confused. You gave somebody claiming to be Ebay your password?
If I were you, I would check my account immediately and change the password.
I can't imagine anybody reputable asking for a password.
Maybe I just don't understand your post.

Greg

No, I didn't give it to them. They had a link to reply to the question from the ebay member just like there always is when you get a question and according to ebay customer service the link may have been a password collecting bogus site. Everything looked just like ebay, but when I tried to log in it wouldn't recognize my user name and password. I immediatley sent an email to ebay fraud alert and they put my account on hold. I had to change my password and talk to customer service chat to get it reactivated.

This is what the email looked like, but it had all of the ebay stuff on it that you can't see since I copied it out of my hotmail.

Glad you didn't get burned.

I got a fake paypal email once. It looked authentic, not a grammatical error on it, but the direction to use their link and enter my password was the clue it was bogus.

I get these and other similar ones from "ebay" and "Paypal" every week it seems.Sometimes the bad grammar/spelling give it away and the address it came from is always a dead giveaway.
Ebay security notice, account update info, unauthorized paypal activity, how much is shipping on your item(and you are not selling anything)and lots more.I have to say though,Josh, have not had that particular one tried as yet.

As mentioned.

NEVER go to the links provided in an email!
Go direct to the site and navigate to where you need to be. Websites and email can be spoofed very esaily.

I have had that happen to me. I didn't send any money either, after two emails, his true colors came through. I'll give some pointers:
1. ebay auction that has Ask before you Buy-SCAM
2. Ebay or Paypal email asking you to verify-SCAM
3. Paypal email saying "Dear valued paypal user:"-Scam Paypal will always address you by your username, not dear valued customer.
4. Too good to be true...IS!!
