If she was a little further to the right, she would have become sandwiched between the cars instead of going over the bars. She was lucky because being caught between the cars could have taken a leg off or worse. Unfortunately I think that's the spot I would have shot for given the short reaction time allowed... |

the brake lights were flashing shortly befor the 180 into her lane, in reading her comments the young lady above makes a comment about wanting to pass that car. I think that there was either 1. a brake system problem 2. the guy started the slide and paniced 3. did some thing else stupid I agree with some of the above comments that she had no where to go, that was a nightmare situation for sure. |

Dawn Champion is a racer out here at Willow Springs. She has the reflexes and experience - but in a situation like that, you're basically just outta luck. She is recovered from a buncha busted bones from a turn 9 crash last year when she had just gone heads-down for the run up the front straight when the guy ahead of her PARKED it on a red flag and she ran over him and broke (if I remember) - pelvis, femur, and a few other bones. She is a quick/good rider and racer who ran out of luck, inspiration and places to go in that video. We're all shaking our heads about that one. |

There's no going back and second guessing an accident. Been there. Contemplated that... She did the very best I think anyone could have done and much better than most. |

The closest I've seen to a cager doing that on the street was in the rain in Texas. Guy was in the fast lane in a mid-size ordinary sedan, blew a right front tire and immediately turned to the right and crossed ALL lanes of traffic (hitting *nobody*) and then slamming head-on into the right-hand barrier. Looked a lot like Dale Earnhart's crash, now that I think about it. Dunno what the injuries were, I wasn't driving and we noticed a cop come to a screeching halt near the accident so the guy driving the cage I was in didn't stop. So having seen that, I *might* have jinked hard left when I saw the car's nose go right. *Maybe*. Then again, he looked like he was "spinning in place" in which case swerving right should have gotten her past that moron's nose. Now as to what happened: I don't think it was the E-brake. I also don't think it was mechanical failure. Looked to me like the guy stood on the brakes and steered right, unloading his right rear tire something Godawful and wiped out. He actually said something about "swerving" and that's probably right as far as his pea-brain takes it. Had he just climbed on the brake and stayed straight he'd have been OK, or at WORST had a minor fender-bender. Sure looks cellphone-related. As it was, having just passed the bike the jackarse KNEW he was turning into her path. Probably didn't care. This guy seriously sucks as both a driver and a human being. |

Oh, one other thing: there were TWO moron cagers involved. Anybody else catch that? Look at the slo-mo. Pay attention to the rims/wheelwells on the silver whatever to the right. That's right. He/she/it heard "skid" and climbed on the brakes too! You can also catch one frame of clear red brake lights in the frame-by-frame shots at the end but the suspension dive at the front and rise at the rear confirm it. Had he/she/it NOT done so, our lady hero would have had room to dodge right! Instead they "closed the box" on her. |

She should have popped a wheelie, put the front tire onto the hood of the cage on the left, and rolled right over him... Ok, just kidding. That was sarcasm, (see my other thread on this topic). I think she did just about everything she could in that instance, and it's proof that good gear is sometimes the only thing stopping you from being killed or maimed. ATGATT! |

<As it was, having just passed the bike the jackarse KNEW he was turning into her path.> More likely had no idea she was there, when he passed her he forgot about her. The car on the car on the right did what you or I would have done. climb on the brakes so you don't get hit. Was there room on the right to move over for that car, don't know. Nasty business. The rider did what she could do. |

The cager fool on the right should have gassed it to get clear of the trouble. Regardless of any bikes around. They HAD the room, it would have been their best plan, instead here's the nose of that Honda coming right at 'em and they TRY and intercept it? (Message edited by Jimincalif on February 15, 2006) |

The thing that gets me is that the rears locked. Why don't you guys go put yourselves in ANY fwd Honda in good shape and STAND ON THE BRAKE AS HARD AS POSSIBLE. I've NEVER locked the rear in a Honda - they have WAY too much front bias. The only squid in that video was driving a cage. He may have stomped on the pedal - but I'll bet large dollars on e-brake pullage at the same time. Hondas do NOT lock rears as I'm sure most fwd cars also don't. Something was wrong with the car or he yanked the e-brake. -Saro |

Saro, only the right rear locked. That's because he not only climbed on the brakes, he steered hard right and unloaded the back rear tire something fierce. Braking alone wouldn't do it, but braking and a hard steer would. Check the slo-mo again: the smoke off the rear right tire only happens once the steering starts. No, I don't think an e-brake was involved. Just really, REALLY bad driving. |

Sorry to ask a question and then disappear. Work, wife and kids. Thanks for the insights. Anything I can think of doesn't come naturally to me. Going left might have worked but that would be counting on the car leaving that spot. It would have been nice if the cage on the right hadn't braked, but I bet 99% of drivers would brake in that situation. If she had gassed it she might have been able to get by before the cage took her lane. But that is increasing speed and damage if she doesn't make it. A better rider than me might have been able to swerve behind the cage on the right and then swerve to pass it on the right. I couldn't do it. It looks to me like she controlled her braking and gave the guy as much room as she could. She did it better than probably would have. Sometimes life just sucks. Thanks again. Gotta go back to work now. |

Watch it again. When the Honda driver gets out of his car, the phone is in his hand. Was he on the phone when they collided or did he just call 911? I would have his phone records pulled. It almost looked like one of those Allstate insurance commercials where they show insurance scams/staged collisions. |

I know we teach to go where the trouble came from, whether this instance, or a car turning across your path. Don't go where troubles going, go where it's been... The vid doesn't offer wide enough field of view, but I bet there's a half a lane and the shoulder up to the median on the left for her to doge to. This is true simply because he overreacted right, whether the wheels locked or not. It's unnatural to do in a split second, but is usually the best course. I don't know if she had more braking available or not, but I'd be scared to use em there anyway for fear of getting plowed from behind. Her situation just sucked... Oh, and a baseball bat should be taken to the civic drivers nuggets... |

I had a 1986 civic hatchback and it was really light in the rear. It would skid straight unless taking a corner. Looks like he overreacted and then froze at the controls. I don't think he did anythng with the E-brake; Just stomped the normal brake to the floor while the steering wheel was of-center. I don't think I would crash in this scenario. Why? I wouldn't enter this roadway. She was trapped in a box. I freak out if I am boxed in. I have been known to pull off of a road with gridlock like that and chill out for a couple of hours. (bookstores are good for that purpose) This looks as if it was in L.A. so that option wasn't open to her. (traffic that heavy all day?) |

The driver is a frikkin' moron. Typical crap. In the last my wife was rear ended 3 times. Thankfully she was in a full sized 1988 Dodge! I was in it twice. A real weird month...and we both had some serious back and neck soreness. Thankfully it has a big hitch and a sturdy bumper. I told her we may as well paint a target on it. Every time the other driver had some nonsense excuse. My bike was down at the time, and for once I was thankful of that. I wish I could have someone like that to help me if I went down ... |

I was reading the posts in her thread on socalsportbikes. Someone posted a comment and included a picture of their bike, and XB9SX. She commented on picture, asking what it was, since she had never seen anything like it before. I was supprised. She is hardly a newbie. Are Buells really that rare? |
