a&p schools are typically 1 and a half, to 2 years..or if you qualify for your civilian a&p after being in the service.. unless you can get on with a company who does apprenticeships.. we're looking for licensed guys rite now though..i'm not done with my apprenticeship, six more months, otherwise i'd be going to dallas..lol..and an apprenticeship is 2 and a half years.. and vegas..i'll keep ya posted! |

Thanks man! Hey, do you have the "sickness" yet? You know you have it when you can identify a helicopter just by the rotor sound from 3 miles away. |

I heard A&P mechanics don't make a whole lot of money. Is that true? The one guy I have talked to at a small airport was complaining that it wasn't something to get into. All that safety wire! |

hehe Swampy, it's like any other profession. You have to pay your dues. You start "small" in General Aviation (Even though many of those gigs pay really well). It helps to specialize in a given area. My specialty is Avionics and Systems troubleshooting. Many guys go into sheetmetal (which is an art in itself), overhaul, etc. When I started out I was fueling aircraft and working for free in the shop while I went to school. I worked my way up from there. I managed to get lucky enough to have someone send me to specialty schools like the Bell Helicopter factory courses. At my airline the pay for a mech tops out at about $30. A general newbie starts at $19 with us. There is money to be made, you just may have to move around till you find that happy spot and we also pray every day that the Magic Carpet Pilots don't crash another airplane into a building. That cost me and about 200 other brother mechanics our jobs at my first airline. and safety wire....another art form in itself! |

Why did it cost you your job? |

people quit flying by the thousands after 9-11. No passengers,no revenue, then came bankruptcy, then they closed the doors. Things are better now. I started with a brand new airline from day one. So far, so good! |

Doh! Sometimes it takes me awhile. Glad to hear things are better for the industry. |

hehe no probs Swampy. Yeah, it is getting better. Big airlines are merging, some are going by the wayside, etc. The guy I work for modeled our airline after Ryan Air from Ireland. We re no frills, cattle car seating like Southwest. We fly simple, easy to maintain aircraft, and go to mainly "feeder" cities outside of the major airports. For now, that seems to be working. Later this year we are supposed to open a base in CanCun. At least then I know where to go vacation! |

and i gotta add one thing to vegas' post about not making alot of cash.. i'm making about a third of what i was when i was doing cabinets and countertops workin for myself...but i hated my job.. now i'm not making near as much, but i get up 90% of the time b4 my alarm even goes off.. it's not all about money..dont get me wrong,i do ok working in this industry..but i'll never get "rich" unless i come up with an original idea that noone has seen b4... and it depends on what you think "good money" is.. i'm on my second yr of my 2.5 yr apprenticeship, and i pulled rite under 40k this yr.. and i absolutely loooove my job.. never been the "company man" type of guy,but that has kinda changed..lol.. hey vegas..i've been having safety wire dreams lately..kinda scary..hahahaha... |

been making a damn good living for most of 30 years as an A&P. started in the army with rotors and later worked bizjets to helos to general av to commuter airline back to helo's for the last 20 years. always had a job, was always willing to relocate for challenges and money. been here for the last 12 years and it will take major changes before i leave. only job where low pay comes with high liability. FAA new motto: we're not happy, till you're not happy! tim |

Loved being a A&P till 9/11 screwed up the industry for commericial airlines... Still in the industry 26 years now, but boy it has changed and continues to do so... More and more non licensed mechanic helpers and outsourcing..... |
