I was in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in '72, riding around on my 56 Panhead, when some guy in a gas station said he had a bike for sale and, did I want to check it out. Yup - Vincent Black Shadow! He wanted $1,000 for it. It wasn't running too well and he said the carbs were effed up. You can give me a big on line kick in the a$$, cause I didn't buy it! ( a G was HUGE money back then!) I would love to ride one of those beasts!

Maybe not You , but yes me. 1000cc V-twin, minimalist frame, same rear suspension. Small bike with a big engine.

I see the parallels. I think he was being sarcastic.

Cool bike.

I agree; when I first saw the XB9S, I thought it managed to look retro somehow despite all of the high-tech.

I admit it; a big part of my buying decision was based on looks.

The Vincent is the motorcycle I lusted for in my youth, I couldn't afford it then and now I really can't afford one. My black XB9S is as close as I think I can come to the Black Shadow.

I saw my first Vincent at the Rock Store in SoCal. I ahd to work my way through quite a crowd. While staring at the bike I started asking the owner questions about it. Got my answers and moved on. I never noticed that I butted right into a cable TV show featuring Jay Leno and his restored Vincent........ Hell of a nice old bike. Funny was that my buddy asked if I talked to Leno after I got out of the crowd. I said "Leno? where is he?". Never noticed the man despite a five minute chat about his ride lol

One of my favorite motorcycle videos, about another V-twin superbike. Not only because of that wonderful bike, but also I can really feel how enthusiastic this "old_man" is.

John, I agree completely. Tried to make a sport bike/cafe racer out of my '70 Sportster in the early '70's and fell short considerably but enjoyed the ride and having a "different" V-twin. Why I own an M2 now. Bob

Bob, That cafe bike looks sweet! Any more pics and details/history on it?

If Willie G. had done that well with his concept there might never have
been any surplus xlcr 1000 motors for Buell to purchase. History could
have changed dramatically for us, as Buell owners.

A friend here on the island has a v-twin Vincent as well as a single cylinder one.

The v-twin is complete, running machine while the other is undergoing restoration.

Very nice bikes and they were definately way ahead of their time.

Thanks guys, for those that asked and anyone interested I bought that bike as a rigid frame chopper because it had some good potential with with an 86 cu. in. motor, true magnesium wheels, three disc brakes and it came with three different carbs, an S&S, a single and a double draft DeLorto. The discs were from the then new Performance Machine. I paid $1800 for it. I rode it for a few months around the Chicago area and couldn't stand the rigid frame and poor handling and tore into it as a winter project. I re-raked the neck to about 26 degrees and made a top frame and the frame that goes from the seat area to the swingarm area out of 1 1\2x4 inch square tube which was the oil reservoir. I had an oil cooler mounted just behind the front wheel. Quarter fairing was store bought and the seat and tail section I made myself and fabricated the high pipes ala XR750's. The single draft DeLorto proved to be the best performing carb. It weighed about 400 lbs dry. This was a few years before HD brought out their XLCR 1000 cafe style bike. I sold it to Buzz Walneck who is now one of the premier classic bike dealers in the nation. Those who I rode with and anybody who saw it either hated it or loved it. Not too many middle of the road. I sold it to get a BMW boxer R1000RS which I eventually turbocharged and ran at Bonneville when I moved here to Utah in 1982. It went 150 plus. I wish I had never sold it for obvious reasons but such as it is for a regular working guy. Never enough money or time. Sorry but no more pictures. Anybody remember the Polaroid Land cameras? More into building than picture taking then. I think this may be the only website it can be appreciated and again why I love my M2. Thanks Erik.

Great buy on the chopper, even better decision to make it a cafe bike. More than that though,
Thanks for sharing the memories Bob!
