Hello all, long time. I've been a busy guy lately. My girlfriend is pregnant, and we'll be having the baby in Sep.!! I've been training for the police dept. (Concord, Ca PD). I submitted an interest card 6 months ago, and just got the application on Jan. 4th. I took the post exam on Jan. 18th, and passed. I now have my Oral board on Feb. 2nd. Crazy thing is, the academy starts on March 6th. I have yet to take the fitness test, or fill out an extended background packet. The problem is this. I've been at my current job for 6 years. They have no clue that I want to be a police officer. I am the operations manager, so I want to give them a months notice. I don't think I'll know if I made it with that much time left. Do I tell them and jeopardize my job? If they know, and I don't make it, then why would they keep me on the payroll as I continue trying at other dept's.?? Should I just wait, and give them as much notice as I get? I plan on helping them out on the weekends, or whenever I can while I'm in the academy to help them transition. I hope I make it! Also, does anyone have any pointers for the oral board? Has anyone gone recently? Thanks for all the help everyone. | ||

If your job had to let you go, would they give you a month? Besides if you tell them your a cop, chances are they'll be kissing your a$$. | ||

Do not tell your job, you are just another asset, similar to a computer. In this day in age I have seen may people work their ass's off putting in 70 hour weeks and not having much of a personal life just te be let go because the company wanted to try something new. This is how I look at the job market, do what you have to do to better yourself because this is what the company is going to do. If making a career change is what you want do your homework, when you know it is a for sure thing then make a press release, isn't this what your company would do, notify the public only after the deal is done. | ||

Many companies do not want employees around at all after they have announced their intention to leave. Somewhat of a modern trend. It sucks. Many will just tell the employee to go ahead and leave and then provide an escort while the employee packs his stuff and exits the premises. Good luck. | ||

Well, even though I'm like 3rd in command at the company. The two owners then me. I work with them on a daily basis. Even have a personal relationship with them. Nothing outside work mind you, just close. All this being said, it would still put me in an awkward situation if I did say anything. | ||

One tidbit of info for you through the entire inerview process.. Keep your composure, Dont get flustered and keep a firm stance on your answers even if your not 100% of them. Good luck and keep us posted. When and if you get the job you'll wonder why you waited so long. | ||

It is a shame your girlfriend is not having the baby around the time you got to training. You could take un-paid maternity leave, go to training and if it did not work out go back to work. If it did work out come back from leave and resign. | ||

I know this has little to do with the topic other than it reminded me of a similar situation. I had someone that worked for me very kindly tell me that they were planning on quitting, but that they were not sure when. I immediately used the force of my personality to provide a timeline for the person's departure. | ||

Similar situation with me once. I told my boss in a month I was leaving to join the Marines. 1 1/2 week later I got a pink slip. Dont tell them a darn thing. They probaly wouldnt give you a month notice on a lay off. Good Luck | ||
