All

new proposed law in Illinois!

good news = the following

Sec. 11-712. Motorcycles; lane usage. A person may, in a safe and prudent manner during periods of traffic congestion, operate a motorcycle between lanes of traffic or between adjacent lines or rows of vehicles.

Not so great news = helmet law (no impact on me, as I wear em, but it's a shame to have a law regarding it, I think)

Sadly, these two issues will likely be acted upon as a unit . . . . .

Helmet laws only give stupid people the chance to breed. I say let them ride without! It is a crowded world and stupid people are leading the charge!

Lane splitting saves lives (incl. mine a few months back)

Well, since I've had to live with a helmet law forever (if it wasn't state law, I was young enough to have to follow Mom's Law) I could live with all that being passed in Georgia. I lane split when traffic is stopped, but I'd rather do it legally.

Which doesn't mean a whole lot since you can still easily get a ticket for it since "safe and prudent" is up to the discretion of the officer.

Looks like it's a straight trade - lane splitting for mandatory helmet use. Read here

Lane splitting in IL won't help me much - 90% of my traffic is in MO and I really like not having to throw my helmet on just to ride around the block to see if anything falls off after a repair.

I've thought about lane splitting laws, but around here the traffic slows down but doesn't stop and usually is a 20MPH-60MPH-20MPH zoo that I wouldn't split in anyway.

Lane splitting should be legal here and I would love it, I do lane split even though it is not legal.

I do choose to ride with a helmet these days but I would like to have the Choice! I could go on for days but it is a choice, just like what pair of shoes do I want to buy, It's my choice...that has been taken away.

Ride down and up the street or a long ride my gear is on. I've been down enough to know it saves me.

As for lane splitting. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE FLORIDA make a law to allow us to do that!!!

Let them ride bareheaded, provided they've signed a donor card!

About two decades ago two unhelmeted bikers lost thier lives in a crash near Winona, Minnesota. A few hours later at the Mayo clinic my nonsmoking cousin, near death from a disease that was destroying her lungs, received a heart lung transpalnt. Today she's the longest surviving heart lung transplant receipient in the world.

Now we'll just have to figure a way to "get small" and sneak under the toll both gates.

it's not law yet and ABATE strongly opposes.

I doubt it sees the light of day - or the light of the Gov's desk at any rate.

I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised, but why are they against it?

I am anti-helmet law, and agree that it'll likely not get passed (it's tried every couple of years round here) -- Illinois DID have a helmet law, in the 60s I believe, that lasted for about 15 minutes ;-}

I am almost will to take the helmet law (very very little impact to me) in exchange for the lane splitting, though

is it wrong that I am kinda enjoying the 500-mile-a-year born-again biker dudes gettin all spun up round this?

thought so. sorry

;-}

Spidey -- the bill has not been passed (hence the term "proposed" in the post! ;-} )

typically, these things are passed/failed together --

I was thinking they opposed the lane splitting. I wasn't reading so good, missed the part about the trade for the helmet law.

In any case, I'd gladly trade a helmet law for the ability to lane split.

Helmet laws are always a sticky subject. I always wear mine. I also do not believe that it should
be mandatory for an adult, kids are another matter though.

It is not supposed to be the governments job to protect us from ourselves, nor do most of us want
to have the government intruding into our daily lives. Despite what the bozo politicians may think.

Those that ride without helmets are taking a risk, that's a given. I'd like to see the constitutional
basis for a mandatory helmet law.

Oh well. It'd be nice for lane sharing to adopted/accepted by the NHTSB/DOT. It should be a
nationally accepted norm. Too bad jealous cagers make the laws.

Last summer a guy I know in Holland, MI. hit a deer on a GSXR750, doing 150 or so MPH, cut the deer in half. Broke both wrists on impact, broke both arms doing the rag doll get off. He has been back to work for about 2 months now. Helmet was fine but for a gouge on the back and the shield being ripped off. He says "Helmets are cool" The guy is a very talented mechanic, I consider him to be intelligent as he is now looking hard at a Buell as his next bike.

Psyclonej, you do the super speedway slide under the barrier, if you're going sideways they can't read the plate either. .

We've had helmet laws in Europe for decades, got no prob with that. Lane splitting is legal too, the cops have enough laws to get you on if they want to & you're doing it stupidly.
Dangerous driving, without due care, etc etc....
