I started a discussion with BuellBozo on the Chocolate City thread about a fellow Bueller maybe needing help after the hurricane. It turns out that he didn't need help but that there is still a great need in his area. New Orleans has gotten the bulk of the publicity but I feel that they are too busy pointing fingers yet instead of trying to get things fixed. I told Greg that even though my church is going to Slidell to help, I'd feel better going to Mississippi where they haven't played political games over the disaster. I contacted a local church in Ocean Springs who is coordinating the relief effort. If you would like to help out I have inserted a link to set up groups or individuals to come. I probably can't come until March or April if Buellers would like to come as a group. http://www.christusvictordisasterresponse.org/ |

www.yahoomaps.com pick a place about 50miles in land and away from the hurricane/flood area. thats my tip/help If you want to live in a glass house in an area with rock storms --- then every so often you'll be rebuilding. If you want to live in or around the N.O. area you should probably build a house on stilts and strong enough to protect from the wind. |

I am all for helping out the victims of Katrina. I do have to say that I am frustrated with all the help going that way though. Before you flame me let me explain. I live on the mountain directly above the "Old Fire". I owned a paragliding school that operated out of the National Forest in the San Bernardino Mountains. It was my sole living for over a decade. I was lucky enough to not lose my house in the fire. Not so lucky keeping the house after the fire though. They closed all access to our flying site for over a year! They were telling us it would be open any minute and to hang tough. I hung in for over a year, lost my house, ruined my credit and am now nearly totally broke. I am living in a friends trailer while trying to build a new business (hot air balloon company). I stress over keeping tires on my bike, food in my mouth and bills paid. I am not looking for sympathy or handouts, have never been on welfare and never qualified for unemployment. Here is my point, I GOT NOTHING FROM FEMA and NOTHIING FROM THE GOVERMENT except for an application to apply for a small business loan. Which was turned down for credit reasons. Actually thats not entirely true, FEMA gave me a $229.00 check to help cover my basic evacuation expenses (which were over $1,200). A large percentage of Katrina victims were on welfare, unemployment etc. The first thing our goverment does is give everyone $2,000. They put people up in $200.00 a night hotel rooms (for months now). Everyone feels so sorry for them. I have to admit is pisses me off. Not that they (victims) are getting help but that they (goverment) told me to pound sand. It does not seem very fair and makes me perhaps less sympathetic than I should be. In any case I wish the best of luck for the Bueller in a spot though and would help if I could but honestly my hands are quite full trying to rebuild my own life. |

Sky I'm sorry to learn of what you've gone through. It just sucks. I can tell you from personal experience that everyone did NOT get $2000. Please read the posts again.I made it clear that I'm not a Bueller in a spot. I didn't ask anybody for anything. This is about the nuts and bolts of mundane things like seniors who can't rip out their own drywall. Please try not to paint with too broad a brush. The worthy can get ignored because of justifiable disgust and contempt for the unworthy. I'd love to go LTA with you some day.Peace. |

Valid points; I recall a Californian not wanting to live in the midwest due to the tornadoes. A person in the midwest not wanting to live in the Gulf Coast due to hurricanes. And a person from the Gulf Coast not wanting to live in California due to the earthquakes. I guess we should just all avoid the areas that may have problems. God forbid something happen to you. |

Buellbozo, Opps misread the post. I thought it was not you but an aquaintence needing help. And yes, I know that a lot of people are having a hard time down South. I was not advocating they be ignored, just ranting about my own situation.......... I am never going to file taxes again! I am taking the fifth and refusing to sign or send in my tax returns. I will have to pay taxes but only if billed by the IRS. For the last two years I have been in a state of tax revolt. I just can't wait till they ask why! |

Join the shadow economy. The revolution will not be televised. Makes me recall Ryker77's posts about the 350,000,000,000... I need to shut up and keep this thread on track. It's important. To Blake and the others who make this forum possible-Thank You. |

Just in case anyone is interested...{www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/13402585.htm] Thanks to those of you who took time to read this. If people aren't aware, they can't care. Ponder on the number of homes destroyed. It's beyond comprehension-mine anyhow. I'm only trying to do what I can as a resident of this wonderful area to make people aware, because the national media isn't gonna do it for us-we have to do for ourselves. Thanks again Badwebbers for the forum. |

It was interesting that on the NBC news tonight they showed several letters that they had recieved from viewers (I thnk mostly from Texas). They were all fed up with the continuing coverage of the problems going on. I can't see where that is any worse than the barrage of the CIA leak and other useless stories that the news blows all out of proportion. If I would have been affected by Katrina I'd still want my story out there. It's too easy for those of us that haven't been affected to move on without doing anything. BuellBozo-I contacted our local paper but haven't heard anything back yet. If they do run a story I'll post the link for you. |
