The "Worst Movie" thread is over there.

Without a Paddle, a take-off on Deliverance,is much funnier than the ads led me to expect. Getting chased by hillbillies (and their pitbulls, Lynard and Skynard) through their burning pot field. "Git up, you stoner dogs!"

Amongst my favourite movies are three Walter Hill classics. Though non of the three are in anyway similar in their subject matter they all have one thing in common. Their soundtracks.

The Long Riders - with it's fantastic Ry Cooder soundtrack. Ry has a fantastic ability to make traditional sounding music just like you'd imagine the 'Old West' to sound.

Souther Comfort - magnificently moody in Cajun sounds, featuring I believe the likes of Clifton Chenier and John Delafose, and of course Ry Cooder.

Crossroads - with it's fusion of traditional Blues and rock and a blinding Steve Vai solo, also featuring the sounds of Ry Cooder.

These are my three favourite Walter Hill movies though there are more Hill / Cooder movie collaborations.

Another great moody and magnificent showing, Electra Glide in Blue, has a fascinating soundtrack too. The band and orchestra include members from hit band Chicago, who also have minor roles in the movie. The closing song 'Tell Me' was sung by Chicago's vocalist Terry Kath and is an absolute masterpiece of music. Strangely it never showed up anywhere else other than on the soundtrack album. More strange when one here's the closing lyrics repeated over and over again, 'God bless America. God bless America. God bless America". That said, the last ever episode of Miami Vice included this great song.

Jeremiah Johnson

That story really speaks to me. Redford really nailed it.

Rocket - if you're talking soundtracks and tying together traditional English/Irish/Scottish tunes with "primitive" Appalachian folk music try the movie Songcatcher

Yes, it's a fanciful, romanticized look at the music but if you like traditional tunes, rent it sometime... also is a great movie to see with a lady (not quite a "chick flick" but you can score some points) ;)

It gets unnecessarily "preachy" a little bit but still a good movie for anyone with a love of traditional music common to both our cultures

From a review:

Doctor Lily Penleric, a brilliant musicologist, impulsively visits her sister who runs a struggling rural school in Appalachia. There she stumbles upon the discovery of her life--a treasure trove of ancient Scots-Irish ballads, songs that have been handed down from generation to generation, preserved intact by the seclusion of the mountains. With the goal of securing her promotion, Lily ventures into the most isolated areas of the mountains to collect the songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted--not only by the rugged purity of the music, but also by the raw courage and endurance of the local people as they carve out meaningful lives against the harshest conditions.

Blake!!

Yes, Jeremiah Johnson (I have been seeking it for two weeks) and also...

Zulu. My wife surprised me with finding that at the library today. Those Brits were amazing. True story. British military discipline and resolute courage under fire.

"Wings Over The World" was the sh*t.....
"real Genius" comes a close second, Val Kilmer's second big pic, and Sara Jessica Parker's last flic as a boy....

Le Mans with Steve McQueen - Some of the best racing sequences ever filmed.
Anything directed by Terry Gilliam.
Anything directed by Martin Scorsese
Millers Crossing is an underrated classic.
Naked Lunch & Dead Ringers are 2 of David Cronenberg's best.
The original Russian Solaris is truely inspired filmmaking.
Mad Max - Balls out coolness with a blower.
The Road Warrior - Balls out coolness with a blower sequel.
Jaws 3 - Guilty pleasure from when I saw it in the theater in 3-D.
