When a broadcast personality who can reach 100's of 1000's of people spout off that motorcycle riders be put in danger by the angry rolling cage drivers it's a absolute travesty!

This persons employers need to be bombarded by phone calls and emails as he is inciting a potential murder!

Those of us that have been put in the squeeze by drivers know it can be fatal and it's fools like this broadcaster than fan the flames of anger in drivers for a activity that is legal in California.

Some good reading

LANE-SPLITTERS BEWARE!!

DANGEROUS anti-motorcyclist morning show IDIOT!

This morning, turned on live 105.3 and caught them saying how they thought it was unfair that motorcycles were able to split lanes, and that we should be stuck sitting in traffic with the rest of the cars.
He went on to say it was his pet peeve and "would love to see people open their car door while a bike was splitting."
His two morning show bitches just sat there and agreed how great that would be. What a bunch of assholes.
Thanks for putting ideas in everybody's heads this morning about motorcycles and lane splitting. .

Listen here... http://home.comcast.net/~kwilson94550/Motor/CBSNews_Live105_Motorcyclists.wmv
Please take the time to let this radio station know how you feel about this guy

I will send one right now. A lot of years ago out here in Southern California Mark and Brian, a very funny couple of DJs said pretty much the same thing. Right away they were bombarded with mail and etc. It was said that a certain Red and White club even made a threat on their lives. They went back on air, said they were sorry, just trying to be funny and were not serious and etc. etc.
They learned from the mistake and now they each actually own and ride Harleys. It happened before my time and the only reason I even know about it is they were talking about it not too long ago saying how stupid they used to be.

Thanks guys!

This is particularly scary for me because I live in San Francisco! And because I don't own a car, I ride my old M2 on the streets and freeways in the city every single day... I probably spend a full 50% of my time between lanes instead of in them! Because of this, I've been following the fallout closely.

You all might like to see what is written on the radio station's website: http://www.live105.com/music/co-op/default.htm

i don't know how long it will be up, but there are a couple audio clips of the DJ's "apology" to the audience and to one of their sponsors! (i'll keep them and will put them up here if anyone wants to hear them.)

I put "apology" in quotes becuase it didn't really sound sincere. You could tell he had his boss shooting a death ray into his backside. Despite this, it's better than nothing.

Anyway, I'm going to reprint an article that i just read over at http://www.southbayriders.com about lanesplitting. It should be read by all.

This is long, but definitely worth sharing:

***

Lane Splitting: Tear Along Dotted Line
By Art Friedman.

Think passing cars between is reckless and inconsiderate? We beg to disagree. But there are some things to know before you start.

I had called USC's Accident Research Department to talk to Dave Thom about helmets, but Harry Hurt answered the phone. Hurt, the lead author of the famous "Hurt Report" about the causes of motorcycle accidents, is arguably the most knowledgeable expert in the area of motorcycle safety and always fascinating to talk to.

Today, however, the news wasn't pleasant. Hurt had been rear-ended and had required surgery on his neck. His brand new truck suffered major damage too. "The stupid part," said Hurt, "was that if I'd been on a motorcycle, I wouldn't have had the accident. I would have split lanes and never gotten hit."

Everyone recognizes that lane-splitting is a way for motorcyclists to save time, which may be why car-bound motorists sometimes resent it. In its defense, lane-splitting also reduces congestion and actually helps everyone get there sooner. In effect, it creates an extra lane. That "motorcycle-only lane" can, as Hurt points out, get you away from the antics of cars, which tend to be most violent at the back of the line. I was originally a reluctant lane-splitter myself, but after diving between lanes to escape screeching cars coming up behind me three times in a single ride, I decided that perhaps there was a cosmic message in there somewhere. That was 25 years ago, and I have been lane-splitting, mostly on a non-emergency basis, almost every day since.

The knee-jerk reaction to lane-splitting for most people is that it's dangerous. In fact, Hurt and his fellow researchers discovered that, if anything, it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, crawling traffic. Hurt theorizes that this is because motorcyclists have an easier time steering around threats than stopping frequently. Evans Brafield, Motorcycle Cruiser's Associate Editor and an instructor for the California Motorcycle Safety Program California Motorcycle Safety Program, reckons that the ability the see ahead and get early warning of what traffic is doing is part of the advantage. Certainly, you put virtually all the threats ahead of you and needn't watch your mirrors much.

At Motorcycle Cruiser and our sister magazines, Motorcyclist magazine and Sport Rider magazine, lane-splitting is a way of life. Here in Southern California, rational lane-splitting is tolerated by law enforcement, and the CHP actually testified against a bill that would have banned it several years ago. In a quarter-century of SoCal commuting, I reckon I have reduced the time I have spent in traffic by months, and I can't recall a single close call while doing it. In fact, I haven't ticked more than half a dozen mirrors in that time. In the last few years, the growing availability of carpool lanes has reduced the need to lane-split on freeways, but increased congestion on surface streets has made it more useful there.

The dangers involved in lane splitting are the close proximity of other vehicles, the limited space for maneuvering and the fact that few drivers anticipate your presence. My standard visibility ploys--headlight on high beam during the day and a day-glow orange Shoei helmet--serve me well lane-splitting as in other traffic situations, but the key to painless lane-splitting is understanding the dynamics of the cars around you and knowing what to expect. For example, though you may feel more squeezed when passing between two vehicles side by side, you are more likely to get bunted when overtaking a car that has an open space next to it, especially if the lane on the other side of you is moving significantly faster. If the driver tries to jump to that space, he may forget to check for you. Whether lane-splitting or not, use caution when riding through the blind spot of a driver when you are between him and a place he is likely to want to put his car.

Other pointers:

- You should be alert and ready to concentrate fully on the matter at hand.

- Enter the lane-splitting zone cautiously. Wait until both lanes are slowed down, so that you aren't being overtaken by a car in the adjacent lane. You may be starting from a slow speed, so your bike won't be completely stabilized, and you don't want to weave into an overtaking car.

- The most dicey time is when traffic is slowing down. Some cars pull under braking and some drivers choose this moment to jump to another lane. If one lane is slowing more than the other, the likelihood of a lane-jumper increases. If the lane next to the one you are using is going faster, entering the lane-splitting zone may put you in the path or an overtaking car that isn't expecting it. I like to wait until both lanes are moving at similar speeds.

- Keep your speed just slightly above that of the cars you are passing. A large speed differential reduces your chances of avoiding a collision when something goes awry. However, you should also be overtaking traffic, so that you can focus exclusively on what's ahead and next to you. This puts you in control of the situation.

- Set a maximum speed for lane-splitting and stick to it. When traffic hits about 30 mph, I get back in line.

- When traffic speed picks up, try to merge back in front of the last car that you will completely pass at normal lane-splitting speeds. Plan ahead to be sure you don't get stuck behind a large vehicle that you can't see past.

- Watch for other motorcyclists overtaking and let them by.

- Acknowledge drivers who move over for you, but don't get mad when someone overlooks you.

- Look for those subtle first signs of a direction change by drivers -- a change in speed, the glance to a mirror, the repositioning of hands on the wheel, the car's front wheel actually beginning to steer. If you look ahead and watch for events that will slow one lane down, you can usually anticipate when driver will want to change lanes.

- As always, stay ahead of the game. Keep your eyes up the road, several cars ahead of you to see those first signs of a change in speed, debris on the road or other event that changes the speed or direction of traffic.

- If you come to a place where two vehicles are uncomfortably close together, bide your time and wait for an opportunity to pass them safely.

- Don't hesitate to honk if the cars next to you get uncomfortably close together. It will probably annoy them less than if you snap off one of their mirrors or bang your head on one of their rear fenders.

- The gap between the two left lanes is usually the largest and most consistent because drivers in the left lane, with no traffic to their left, move well to the left to see ahead and to open the gap on their right side.

- Watch for abrupt changes when another roadway merges with either of the lanes you're between.

Cruisers have some advantages as lane-splitting weapons. The sit-up riding position offers a good view over cars. The torquey power characteristics provide good response, though you shouldn't let revs drop too far. There are negatives, too. Cars are widest at their mirrors, which, unfortunately, are often about the same height as cruiser handlebars and mirrors. Ultra-wide bars like those of the Vulcan 1600 Classic limit the gaps you can traverse. In fact, if you split lanes regularly, a narrow bar (or sawing an inch off each end of the stockers) is a good idea. The best lane-splitting weapons are dual-purpose bikes because they are narrow and you sit quite high.

I have heard some lane-splitting horror stories over the years: the rider who hooked a crash bar on a car bumper (unconfirmed), the riders who have had doors flung open in front of them either intentionally or unintentionally (at least one confirmed) and the rider who split lanes alongside a big rig which wasn't aware of him and then crept forward, first pushing the bike over (rider and passenger jumped off) and then running it over without ever knowing it. I have only encountered one driver intent on keeping me from passing ("Kick his damn door in!" was the unheeded advice shouted by a nearby trucker), but thousands who have pulled over to give me extra room. There are also tales of non-injury encounters with drivers disposing of coffee, over-filled ashtrays or the contents of an upset stomach, but I haven't encountered anything worse than the stuff people sometimes throw in your face even when you're in the middle of your lane.

And I spend a lot less time out there in path of danger or trash when I'm tearing along the dotted line.

Cerbero:
coersed (sp?) apology better than nothing, er no its not, DJ woodie does not get it..

I started to listen and decided not to waste the time. IF a local motor cycle business responded tactfuly on the air then better for us,

there is an issue here of what is responcible use of broadcast media?

This in my mind is the same level of irresponcible behaviour as say

1. Jerraldo Rivera giving away the position of the detatchment he was embedded with in the gulf.
2. "Torria Tollie" with CNN, this blonde bombshell, was in Jeruselem, in GW1 and basicaly gave the impact position of one of the scudd missles out on the air after being warned the second time the isralies cut the feed off in one of her announcements, for what ever reason she left CNN some time after that

3. Dan Rather. this speaks for it's self

All 3 in one sense are examples of misuse of the "power" of mass media, weather intentional or not there is a responcibility here that some one in the management of the radio station seems to mis understand,

I think that the action by the station is a step in the right direction, and I thank you for your on the ground inputs, I took the time from my day to respond because YOU have the right to safely use the highways there in CA, The thought of a nice person as your self lying on the side of the road injured or dead because of this broadcast ..............

The real issue here Corry is more about personal responcibility, or the lack of it by DJ woodie.
and the station managers at 105

listen man Ride safe, watch out for the expresso drinkin, phone talking, note taking, makeup applying, trash tossing, we don't care about any one but ourselves, cagers that are out there,
they may not be able to take resopncibility for them selves.

I don't live in California, and really envy the lane splitting thing a great deal.

As one who travels to that state fairly often, and as one who generally drives a reantal car, I find myself surprised the first time a splitter passes me -- while it's not illegal, it can rattle those who ain't use to it, and rattled folks do stupid things -- you guys be careful out there, and keep a weather eye out fer outa state plate and reantal pigs . . . .

try driving in Italy. Car, mopeds, and bikes all lane split. heck some of the roads don't even have lanes!!

Mopeds/scooters will even ride on the sidewalks. I think about three guys from my ship got it by a scooter.

---

If you take a second back away from your intial anger. Look at it this way. When your in your car in a 4 lane highway. Signs for the last 5 miles "left 3 lanes closed" you merge into the soon to be only open lane. After you wait in line for an hour some punk (car) ignores the merge signs and runs all the way up to the last orange cone and then cause your lane to stop and wait for him. I can recall one time that I waited for over 1 hour to travel 1 mile. All becuase every other car was cutting in front of the line. Now most cagers will never forget this. I didn't. But since they assume bikers are causing them to wait as well-- thus the hate.

Perhaps a few bike clubs should sponser some road side billboards in high traffic areas. Letting cagers know that lane splitting saves everyone time and helps keep gas cheaper!!

Ryker, You have hit on a great idea! I have been lane splitting for 20 years and the sheer number of people who think it is against the law is stunning. Maybe a few well placed signs in high traffic areas would start a change in attitude. They could even have a web address at the bottom that leads people to a website with the reason why it is safer and perhaps even have a link to the hurt report. the web addy could even be www.hurtreport.com

I have some time and some connections in the state, I could donate to this effort if anyone wants to help!

soo true, you have nailed the symptom on the head! what is the real root problem? memory?, lack of courtesy?, ineptitude?, distraction?, selfishness?

The Germans may have a partial answer, in the poloicy of "Drive right" on the autobahn, in essence it states that if you are cruising in the left lane and you either hold up traffic, or cause a pass on the right its ticket time for you. I also agree about the bill board, to inform residents, boards indicating number of deaths caused by cagers in addition

ie there were 3,200 motorcycle fatalities in CA last year,
In 3000 of those incedents the automobile was at fault, please share the road....
pic funeral, wrecked bike(under car), child asking mother what happened to daddy?

Minnesota has one thats cool, picture of a "big tough biker", captioned along the lines of

Lets get it rolling! Who wants to help?
I really think we need a state wide campaign to educate cagers about lane spliting.
Potential projects:
contact Cal-trans regarding sign policy.
Contact various California motorcycle clubs. regarding potental support.
raise funds for signs/billboards/ads.
contact the local AMA for assistance.

Personally I think that if we educate the cager public life will be nicer and safer for us.

Let's see, the DJ is sorry because he didn't realize the bikers in the bat area were that organized.
He also claims that his ignorance of the fact it is legal made his statements OK?
what a load of crap. how much encouragement does a roadraging nutball
need to take action on those words and kill some poor rider commuting to work.

The moron DJ needs to be on the road again looking for work.

If he volunteers to run himself into a suitably solid piece mass at a reasonable speed
(say a brick wall or telephone pole at 30mph) to experience first hand how dangerous encouraging
people to do this crap is he shouldn't be let off of the hook.

The Yamaha dealership sponsoring the show should spend their money elsewhere. But I'm a
little militant about defending the right of riders to exist.

Copied from Motorcycle Daily. The DJ's Apology follows. KC

www.motorcycledaily.com
While some of our readers, especially those who frequent some of the many motorcycle-related message boards, may have already heard about this situation, we felt we should report it for those of you who haven't heard what happened.

About a week ago, a popular San Francisco-area radio host (Woody, of 105.3) made some seriously anti-motorcycling comments in his morning broadcast. According to numerous reports that have been posted on the web, Woody told his listeners "One of my pet-peeves is people on motorcycles who think they don't have to wait in traffic like everybody else... Nothing would make me happier than to watch somebody, and I've actually seen this happen, somebody open a door and take you out as you are trying to squeeze through..."

The motorcycling community reacted quickly and strongly to this outrageous statement, and Woody's station received a flood of phone calls and letters protesting Woody's remarks. Bay Area Yamaha, a local dealer who advertised on 105.3, also received a lot of negative feedback on the issue. Woody responded within a few days, making his apology to the Bay Area motorcycling community via the Bay Area Riders Forum. Here is that apology:

First, let me apologize to everyone for causing such a stir. Believe it or not this wasn't any kind of "stunt" to try to get listeners or anything.......what sense would that make? Anyway, I'm really sorry and I've tried to take it back a million times so far, and have advocated lane splitting and encouraged people to STOP WITH PEOPLE ON MOTORCYCLES on the roads, since the initial comment on the 12th.

At this point I don't know what else I can say other than I'm sorry and trust me, message received loud and clear......don't with bikers. Ya'll are amazing at sticking together.

Besides taking the safety class (which I'll do, I'm actually really looking forward to it. I've always wanted to learn how to ride) I've got some other things cookin' in an attempt to "make good" with you guys and biker broads. Including, but not limited to running some awareness Public Service Announcements about lane sharing.....lots have been asking and suggesting that. So consider it done. They'll be on by weeks end. Is there somewhere I can get some specifics.....facts? We'll need to write copy.

Don't take this out on Dan at Bay Area Yamaha, he had nothing to do with this, and trust me when I tell you he gave an earful to everyone here at the radio station about his displeasure over the situation. You can hate me, that's fine.....I'll understand. But Dan wasn't involved in the original segment, and has done nothing but be a stand-up guy and defend motorcycling.

He's got it right though.......as do most of you on this board.......let's try to turn this into a positive. We on the morning show will be more than happy to help promote a charity event, or something else of the ilk to help get the word out.

Again, I'm really sorry. Not that you have to believe me, but it's my hope that over time all of you can see that I'm not an evil guy. Just a dumb radio DJ. Lesson learned.

Obviously our first reaction should be to express how thankful we are that none of Woody's listeners were stupid enough to take his advice and 'take out' one of our motorcycling brethren. After that, we can stop and take pride in the fact that a strong and united response from the motorcycling community showed this media outlet that there are serious consequences for such irresponsible and dangerous actions.

This ahole would never have the balls to actually open the door himself. What if the biker got up? Aughhhhh! Some people cant stand seeing someone make the best of a bad situation even though the biker is not adding anything to the traffic jam. If anything it's one less car in the freak'n mix! If people would only think before they spew...
