Some of you might remember my shop renovation questions from last year. Well the project is now beginning to take shape.

We started out w/ this old 'government' granary built by my wife's grandfather and a neighbor in 1938.

Last year I painted it, installed sky lights in the roof hatches, and put a new roof on it.

Then just last week I started on the interior. The building is 48' x48' and has three 16' square bins on either side of the alley, and a door at each end. I wanted to remove four of the bins and create a 32'x48' open work space, but couldn't decide how to span the 32'space w/out spending a bunch of money. Finally after a year of research I have the solution.

First I installed wind bracing on the existing rafters (thanks for that tip, Blake)

Then I built a 5' deep bridge-truss and sheathed it w/ 1/2" CDX plywood, which was glued top and bottom to notched 2x10's.

Once the beam was in place and the glue had cured I removed the wall below.

By the time the wall looked like this, half of it had been removed.

I was very scared the whole shebang would collapse on my head, but it didn't even creak or groan at all, even when I climbed up in the rafters and jumped up and down.

Now to do the bins on the east side of the alley.

Man, I wish I could have something like that. Get her all done and add electricity and maybe central air along with some windows and that sucker with be complete. Might want to add net connection to. Just in case you have to look something up.

The 5-year plan is finish gutting it this winter, pour a new heated floor sometime next summer or fall(heat provided by the old house furnace) and then new overhead doors following that. Ultimately one of the remaining bins will be my "office" w/ all the perks an office should have, intranet, sattelite TV, 'fridge, etc. The other bin will be made into a paint booth.

S3T< the bus is a '71 w/ 98K original miles. It's not quite a fast as my Buell...

When its done we'll have a real "Buell" gathering!

Y'all come now, ya hear?
