I was replacing the chin fairing on my bike and had the forward shock bolt out and the bike slipped of the center stand! It almost fell but I managed to catch it. When I got it righted and put back on the stand. I noticed a puddle of oil that leaked from the shock res. It was about the size of small pancake!

Will this cause me problems?
Can I ride it to a dealer and get it serviced?
What are the issues I might face.....

Most likely your shock seal has given out or did you loosen any fittings or lines on shock itself? That's a no-no as they are nitrogen charged .If either is the case it's a great opportunity to get your shock redone by suspension shop like Race-Tech,Aftershocks,etc.

No, I didn't loosen any fittings. The shock was replaced under recall a couple of years back.

Man, that sucks! I guess if I ride it in the morning and I notice leaking coming out of the forward area of the shock, I will know I blew the seals right?

It stopped leaking tonight after I righted the bike and got it on the center stand. I was hoping it had a bypass or blowout valve for just such an occurance. I guess not. I put it all back together and gave it some good bounces and didn't see any fluid, but I guess I need to ride it.

Any hesitation in riding it after something like that. Granted I won't be doing 177mph like someone we know, but a 25 mile one way commute will be the norm in the morning.

Naw,ride quality not the best, though.Dealer won't really be much help, they will want to sell you a new shock.Might as well redo yours, cheaper and it will end up better.

If a bunch of healthy-looking sailors all offer to buy you a round tomorrow night, then it's likely you did.

If you decide to just replace the stock shock, I have a stock shock for sale. It is in excellent condition. It is listed in the classified section for $100.

Jon, wrong shock.
The tube frames shocks worked "backwards."

Thanks Glitch, didn't think of that.

I also have a race can I think I am going to get rid of, I just got a used Drummer, but I don't know if it is going to be too loud in the village.

Ok, rode it in today and do not see any leaking. I also adjusted the shock and forks to a tighter setting due to my robust 5' 11" 240lbs frame. It seemed to ride and handle the same, though the front didn't dive as much under braking.

I guess I will see how it hold up through the winter.

Are you sure it was shock oil? The oil line coming from the oil-pump (directly above the shock reservoir) started leaking on my bike and it fooled me into thinking my shock seals let go (again!).

The most obvious handling symptom of a leaking shock would be rebound pogoing after hitting a dip.

Yeah, pretty sure. I saw the fluid come out of the two fittings on the shock resevoir. After I right the bike and got it stable I wiped up the floor and saw fluid drip off of the two res. fittings. I cleaned them up and I haven't seen a leak today. I also noticed no impact on my ride, to date.

Slow-
Mine took about 6 months to get so bad that I was bouncing down the road. I had oil all over my bike during the process.
I had trouble finding a place to rebuid the stock one but was told Aftershocks in CA will do it.
I decided to get a Works Performance unit from American Sport Bike and have been real happy (& $750 poorer).
