After doing a few mods (mainly adding a Crossroads Devonator 2 breather and support bracket), I have been having this problem. It starts up and idles just fine, but when I put it in gear, it will die as I release the clutch. This has not happened before adding the Devonator, but I can't see what happened during the install that may be causing this. If you are not familiar with this product, it is a breather and carb support bracket that vents directly into the intake path. The breather bolt spacers seemed a bit too long so to close the space between the mouth of the carb and the face of the bracket I had to use 2 gaskets (fairly thick ones, making about 1/16th of an inch together). I also had to use breather bolts that should be from a stock Sportster (long straight allen head bolts with the breather hole down the middle). I covered the breather vent hole for the Buell Race air cleaner since it was no longer needed. It is about 35 degrees out, idle was around 1800 rpms with the choke pulled out and engine running for about a minute. That is pretty much the situation, I hope someone can help. |

I would have to say it is the kickstand safety switch. I think it is just luck that it happened after you did some mods. |

My guess (based on not being there to experience the problem)...either side stand switch or neutral kill switch. I don't think I've ever heard of an intake leak causing immediate stalling. But then again...I've seen stranger things happen with my Buells. |

If you've a carb, the intake leak shouldn't be enough to effect stalling. try warming it up and/or keeping it choked while you release the clutch, that is, AFTER you've checke dthe kickstand switch. sounds like a definitive kickstand switch isue. |

This would be awfully coincidental, but check the wiring harness that runs above the rear cylinder head, just below the gas tank. It rubbed through on my S3 and gave similar symptoms. ~10 cents worth of electrical tape fixed it. |

I had a similar situation a while back. I had every Harley "expert" stop by and add their two cents; all were wrong. It the end it was just the neutral start switch. Unplug it from the hand control and stick a jumper wire in there and see if it cures what's ailing you. |

If '00 Cyclone wiring is similar to '96 Lightning, I'm paraphrasing from my svc manual: 'The ignition is "on" when the ignition relay is grounded through A) side stand switch with side stand up, or B) neutral switch in neutral, or C) clutch lever switch with lever pulled in. Note that Ignition can be "on" if in gear with side stand extended and if clutch is pulled in. However if in gear with side stand extended and clutch lever is released, ignition ground is lost and engine dies.' Sounds like the clutch switch works OK and if it idles in neutral with clutch lever out, the neutral switch is OK too. But when put in gear, the neutral switch opens and ignition relay should be grounded through the side stand switch, but it's not. If the side stand switch or its wiring is defective or the side stand is not all the way up, the switch will be open circuit. Try disconnecting the side stand switch and jumpering the two contacts in the wire harness connector temporarily to see if the bike runs in gear with clutch lever out. If so, I would say the side stand switch is bad. If not, there could be a wire harness problem. Sparky |

I'd be willing to bet even money on the sidestand safety switch. Classic symptoms. Let us know! |

OK - but I know from past posts of reading the BADWEB several times that when playing with the intake - a leak may result - which can have those simptoms. True - that side stand switch bedevils even the Blast, and with the age of the tubers getting greater such may well be the case, still if that is not the case, then I figure I would then be right - lol GT - JBOTDS! an intake leak would affect the idle as well as load-running, though. I have yet to see or hear of an intake leak on a carburated machine that allows a nice healthy idle, but causes the machine to die when engaged in gear. |
