After not riding for about a week and a half due to snow, I went and installed a couple of new parts. After the parts were put on, I went to start up my bike to try them out. I squeesed the clutch, put the trans in neutral, raised the stand and hit the starter. Starter worked, but nothing. I checked the petcock and hit the starter again, still nothing. I opened the gas cap to see if I had fuel, closed the cap and hit the starter again, one cylinder fired and that was it. I then double checked my installations of the new parts, everything checked out. I then gave the throttle a hit and hit the starter again, same result as last time.

After all of that, I looked over the whole bike and noticed the choke cable. How I forgot about pulling out the choke, I have no idea. I pulled it out and hit the starter and it fired up instantly. I felt so stupid.

...that's nothing...

A few years ago I was restoring a '67 Fastback and decided to install a new fuel tank. Problem was I had to get the old one out and it was full of old gas and gunk and therefore could not be lifting out (old Ford's have a drop in tank).

So I being a very clever young man decided to drain the tank using my wet/dry shop vacuum. I noticed a warning label about keeping it away from flamable liquids, nevertheless I decided to proceed anyway.

Well... it drained the tank quickly and immediately after burst into flames. I used two fire extinguishers and still didn't put out the fire. So I had to run around back for a garden hose which did the trick.

Now I had a melted shop vac. and tons of white dust all over the driveway. My wife was out shopping so I quickly cleaned up the mess as best I could and since it was trash day, placed everything into a bag on a the curb.

The wife pulls up... notices the white dust and the black marks on the driveway and starts the Spanish inquisition. Just then the garbage truck pulls up... I'm telling my wife to be quiet (your technically not allowed to throw away flamable liquids)... and as the garbage engineer starts loading my trash... he decides to open the bag to see what's inside. The wife is yelling something about "What did you blow up now?" and this guy is about call for back up.

Anyway garbage men are not the brightest so he decides it's best to avoid confrontation with a mad blonde and went on down the street. I had to "drop my pants" and explain my brilliance to the wife.

Needless to say the old tank popped out right away after that. Now whenever I get out my new shop vac, my wife immediately makes a smart a$$ comment about the warning label.

Feeling better?

It's just because it's winter man. That causes people, who can't ride due to it, to do weird things. Your just out of practice. Don't worry though, I'll put on 300+ miles today for you.

remind me to tell you about the guy who, after a marathon drive with trailer and a couple of Buells in tow (wanting to save some energy for the ride once arrived, doncha know) found that one of his two-bit tie-down straps would release tension (said tie-down was the first one he tried to loosen, and inboard one) -- wanting to get on the road soonest, said smarty-pants whipped out his switchblade, and cut the offending tie-down strap PDQ

and watched his scoot topple over, off the trailer, and onto the tarmac

feel better?

Years back (but still old enough to know better} I was having trouble getting the lawn mower started. I overfilled the tank and some splashed over and I continued trying to find the problem. I then removed the plug and set it on the cylinder to check for a spark. Well sure enough it had plenty of spark cause the whole thing went up in flames. I thought about rolling it out into the driveway to let it burn while I grabbed the water hose but I didn't want the neighbors to know what a moron I am so I spotted a shipping blanket covering an antique table that had boxes stacked on it and yanked the blanket out from under the boxes leaving the (not empty) boxes sitting still. I quickly covered the mower and smothered the flames. It all happened so fast that none of the rubber parts melted and the mower (warm now) started right up. It would've ended differently without that blanket!!

OK I got a nice lawnmower story for you.

I forgot and left my old lawnmower out in the rain and then rain turned to snow.
I wanted to put it away dry and therefore intended to run it out of gas.
Well I pulled and pulled but there was nothing.
I took off the aircleaner and blasted the ignition contacts with WD40 to try repelling the water.
still no good.
I took out the plug and it looked fine. I pulled it over with the plug out and there was a good spark.

That's when I checked the gas.

Last summer I had a leaking primary gasket on my S1W. After removing and installing all the neccesary parts, I needed to take her for a "shake down" run. Shake down is the key word here (it is a Buell, ya know: D ). I start her up and throw on a helmet and some gloves. So far, so good. Cruise around the hood...still no problems. Down along the lake...still no problems. I get about 5 miles from home and decide everything is good. Figuring it was a good time to launch the front tire, I proceded to power wheel out of first and into second. Front wheel comes down and I go to shift into 3rd. What the......

Yep....forgot to tighten the little nut on the shift lever arm.
