Seth, don't forget to tell them to get the DVD of the series and watch the series before they watch the movie. |

Like I said in the "TV in the 60's" thread- there's more sci-fi on TV these days than I can keep up with. I've seen a couple of episodes, but never enough to catch on to the show. How about a brief synopsis? |

There's a video compilation of major plot points from the series here: http://centripetalnotion.com/2005/10/10/07:37:41/ It should get you up to speed enough to enjoy the movie. |

I came to this series late myself. I watched all of the TV episodes before the movie at the suggestion of a friend. Glad I did. The TV show was fantastic. I can't believe FOX canceled it. Movie was great too. Glad I saw it on the big screen. I'm buying the DVD if I don't get it for Christmas. Favorite line from the series? "I call her Vera" |

Brief synopsis? It absolutely badazz, awesome, kickazz, and awesome. Better than 99% of modern sci-fi. Written superbly! |

One of my favorite lines from Serenity: Zoë:Good to go sir. Just loading her up. Are those grenades? Jayne: Cap'n doesn't want them. Zoë: We're robbing the place, we're not occupying it. I just bought my first copy of the movie; I'm expecting another one for Christmas. |

Still amazes me how many Buell holigans are also game, and / or sci-fi geeks. |

Yep. And showing my age, I remember the original Battlestar Galactica series. The new one on SciFi is much better. MUCH darker. Then again, the original came to us during the 'dark ages' of disco......... |

The same special effects company from Battlestar Glactica did the Serenity/Firefly deal. Some say they see "recycled" spaceships in the crowded scenes of the movie (the belt of Reavers ships.) The writing on the series is unbelievably good, for television, I have the DVD series, seen each one at least twice, and still when I watch it, see something new. I found the transcripts of most episodes here: http://firefly.shriftweb.org/transcripts.shtml and find this site very useful, the dialogue so fast and glib, and so funny, and occasionally deep. I can't believe they cancelled it too, it really shows FOX disrepects audiences' intelligence. |

Then again, the original came to us during the 'dark ages' of disco......... Oh, man, I'm having a bad flashback. You guys are making Serenity/Firefly sound pretty interesting. The spaceship effects on the new Battlestar Galactica are pretty dang cool; I'm looking forward to checking out Serenity. Evidently the SciFi Channel is showing Firefly now; I've seen a couple of episodes. |

The thing that I love about firefly is the ships don't make any sound in space. |

I've seen the TV series DVDs (more than once) and the movie (soon to be more than once)... I think it's one of the best science fiction westerns ever! Shiny!

Well... I got home from work a bit after midnight and have since watched Serenity twice; seen every bit of special feature/ deleted scenes, and have even found the "Easter Egg"... If you aren't familiar with the t.v. series Firefly or don't know much if anything about the movie Serenity, please do yourself a favor, see this movie. Can't stop the signal |

I can't believe they cancelled it too, it really shows FOX disrepects audiences' intelligence. Firefly first aired on FOX during the baseball playoffs, which bounced them around on the schedule so much fans couldn't find it, tough to get big audience that way. It is surprising, there is far worse fair on the tube that has survived. I dig it, very unique sci-fi. P.S. Buy 'Serenity' and 'Galactica Season 1 or 2' get $10 at Best Buy currently. |

I forgot the mention my second favorite thing about this show (after the very witty dialogue) is that there are NO ROBOTS and NO ALIENS. Aside from the obvious savings in special effects budget, it makes it much more compelling in the sense of believable, as it's supposed to be set only 500 years in the future, and they don't have these gimmicks to fall back on, the show is mostly about the relationships between people (i.e. that's all they have to work with so it has to be good.) |

The fact that Fox originally showed the episodes out of order didn't do much to help establish the fan-base either, like the shuffle of time slots wasn't enough. That show never had a chance. A co-worker loaned me the Firefly DVD box set about six months ago. The more I watched, the more I wanted to watch. One night I sat through four episodes in a row and then got mad at myself for burning through so many in one sitting. I rationed the rest out like snake-bite serum. And to think I still haven't seen the movie yet . . . I know what I'm picking up with the Best Buy gift certificate I'm pretty sure I'll be getting this weekend! |

That's FINE. It's ended and it was ALL good. It wasn't raped and left for dead like the matrix movies and starwars. It ended GOOD. Like Calvin and Hobbes. |

Serenity is not really sci-fi, but a western. And a pretty damn good one at that. |

Awesome, like Han Solo and the Millenium Falcon on steroids, and not dumbed down for eight-year-olds. |

XLcr, Pretty good description "...Easter Egg?? what is this and how do I find it?.." An Easter Egg is an extra special feature, hidden in a DVD; usually found by pushing the up, down, or side to side buttons on your remote until something random is highlighted(The Matrix DVD's egg was found by highlighting the red pill and pushing enter). Serenity's egg is found by going to the main menu, pushing the right arrow and pushing enter when the ornate design is highlighted. I don't want to spoil what is is but I will say that you should watch the movie first than check out the hidden egg. It's funny.

"Shiney" is a perfect example of Joss Whedon's ability to make his scripts sound like conversation with real world slang, not a script. No techno bable about warp cores, plasma conduits, or dilithium crystals. The "'verse" is full of normal people in an extraordinary circumstances and it's a shame we won't see more. Can't wait to see his next project. |
