Garmitsch,,,,excellent memories. My kids loved eating at the Patton on weekends. Trips to Oberommergau and camping at Lake Chiemsee were regular weekend events.

Okay, first of all, the 'n' word doesn't mean a color, it means an attitude. I know some white people that could very well be called the 'n' word for the way they act.
Personally, I don't use it, but could care less if it's used in the "right" manner.
Also, I used to work with one hell of a programmer. The guy made $80 an hour. I almost went to work for him. He happened to be from Iran. We'd hear him walking towards our office and someone would say (loud enough for him to hear) "Is that a camel I smell?" It was FUNNY! We were making fun of the typical racist comments that people tend to use. Towelhead was also occasionally thrown in there. Did he take offense? NOT ONE BIT! He would usually throw some honky phrases back at us.
The moral: Don't be so quick to jump to the defense of someone who is getting called "names"...you never know the reason behind it. |

Tramp - not sure but no dictionary or translator I found had any translation of negre. Of course I'm not French and I don't think they would have taught that in high school.
I do understand that it has been used negatively towards black people, but there are other definitions:

here's the translation of "negre" from "The New College French And English Dictionary":
negre [negr] adj
Negro; dark brown
negrerie [negreri]
f slave quarters
negrier [negrije] }adj masc}
slave
slave driver,
slave ship
So, you see, when the guinean slaves were unloaded from the slave ships, they were referred to by the french 'negre', which the colonial english tongue bastardized to 'nigger'....
either way, it's absolutely race-indicative, and it ain't nice. |

Tramp, don't think that I don't agree with you, but Negre or Negro (roll the r) in Espanol is simply color. Blacks were referred to by color (much like mexicans call each other Pinche Cafe' etc.) and it became negative.

ummmm...charlieboy- you're disagreeing with the
"New College French And English Dictionary"...
and "negre", in french, means negro.... as in negroid person.
now, being as i have to walk you through this, it's a French ENGLISH dictionary. when they say 'negro' in it, they mean african american person..it's not a french spanish dictionary.
i'm more than aware of the spanish translation of negro.
further, 'negre' means 'slave' in french, as well. in french, "Black" is "noir"...the french were the primary levassieurs of King Louie's (that'd be a french guy, 'charlieboy') huge territories in the southeastern US, from whence the tradeword "negre" arose and the anglo-tongued southerners soon started saying "nigger". If you had the most remedial understanding of french you'd know that "negre" sounds almost identical to "nigger", and is translated as such in much french literature.
I don't have many of my Rimbaud materials handy (did a thesis on Rimbaud and Verliane), but I do recall several utterances, in "en saison en enfer" where he refers to "Sham Nigger", and it's translated, by lady enid starke, as "negre"
again, this is off the top of my head.
So, when you say you don't agree with me, you're really only saying you don't agree with either collegiate dictionaries, historical facts, or literary translators of great reknown.

"negre", charlieboy, is NOT "color". it means "Negroid", more succinctly.
there are many fine dictionarie sout there, and several french badwebbers.
King Louie's land comprised an enormous chunk of Dixie, and most of it's denizens spoke french.
ask a french speaker to pronounce "negre" for you.
now ask an acadian to pronounce it in his own patois, or ask a native of dominica or new caledonia to pronounce the word in "bech la mere"", which, incidentally, means "Spade of the sea".....
you wanna hear about the etymology of "spade", now?

I call them black, not negre, negro, or nigger so it doesn't matter...I'm white. Weak people have to find some other name like African American to dance around the race issue. I call it like it is. Black people don't call me Welch American?
Why does race always have to be so serious? Most of my Mexican friends I call beaner and I'm a white minority here in Yuma. They don't care, they laugh and call me wedo or something worse...
Either way, among the ignorant, nigger isn't always a black thing. My mom brought my Hawaiian father home and her good mormon mother said, "You're not going to marry that nigger are you?" |

I took my darling home a sweatshirt with it on,
She wore it once & hit me twice (packs a punch too)some spoilsport told her of the other usage of the word.

Interestingly, it has nothing to with any "general Jackson" of revolutionary times.
In colonial America, colored folk were oft-referred to as Blackjacks (much like they were referred to as 'spades', which i'd like to be referred to as forthwith, but I digress), or 'jacks', for short.
when the escaped slaves ran off into the ramapough mountains of NE NJ, and interbred with some of the lenape there, whom were joined by scores of german hessian mercenaries who didn't want to return to germany, they became mulatto, which the colonials referred to by the two nominate races in mulatism, "Jacks" and "whites", so they were referred to as "jacks&whites", which later became "jackson whites".
Later when many cherokees moved north on the 'trail of tears', dozens split off to the northeast and found the jackson white sesconced in the verdant hollers of the ramapough mountains, so they stayed and infused the follk with more amerind blood.
I attended high school with many jackson whites, they were some of the best deer hunting and trapping buddies i had.
agroup of them had moved form 'ringwood, nj' to warwick, ny, for work in the 1940s.
many served as standins for the white denizens of orange county, ny, during WWs I&II, serving under the names of the caucasoids who could afford to pay them to fight so that their won sons wouldn't have to.
there are many dead war heroes in the cemetery on stag hill, with no american legion flags, etc.
that's my rant for the day, back to the mountain with me...
they all carry the dutch surnames of their forebears' 'owners', such as van dunk, defreese, etc.
