I found this link over on slashdot and I thought some of you would find it interesting. BMW is using the exahust gas to drive a steam engine. Interesting concept. Wonder if it comes with a whistle :-) http://www.gizmag.com/go/4936/ |

Why not just put the turbine directly into the exhaust tract? Oh... already been done before and much simpler too. I don't believe the 15% gain in efficiency is achievable in normal operational scenarios. There just isn't that much heat coming out of a cruising automobile engine. Now, if the engine is cranking at WOT, that 15% seems plausible to me. I'd rather have an efficient turbocharger. You can achieve similar improvements to efficiency and get a whole heck of a lot more power gain. (Message edited by blake on December 15, 2005) |

Yep, "Combining the innovative assistance drive with a 1.8 litre BMW four-cylinder engine on the test rig reduced consumption by up to 15 percent... They are talking about the WOT case there. |

I always thought that a stirling-cycle engine would go great with the heat from a catalytic converter. |
