I am looking to buy a power transformer for my Aus. trip and they are rated in watts,so my question is how do I determine which to get to make sure my power tools, etc will work??Just go big and forget it? |

Jim, One would have to consider how many devices would be being used at the same time. To figure your max wattage needed use this P(wattage)=I(max current draw)* V(aussie voltage standard). All your pwr tools have a max amp draw rating on them. All the nice electronic stuff has a normal use wattage draw on them. Go big is one way. The two mid size(equal to or larger than a single) might be the best way. Sensitive stuff on one and power hungry on the other. |

Be careful with them. Some of the cheaper ones just use a diode in series with the line to stop the current from flowing half the time. This will make your hair dryer work, but it won't do well with more complicated stuff. They come with a warning on the box not to use them with electronic equipment. The better converters use a transformer, but you get much less power for the same $$. |

After spending some time in europe dealing with 220 50 hz power and using converters I would give the same advice as jlnance and be wary of using any expensive electronic devices |

Jim let me know what power tools you need. There is no power on the salt so if you need it out ther just pack your US gen set or let me know what you want so I can provide Aust power tools with Australian Gen set. |

Also, 50Hz is harder on your gear than 60Hz. You might notice that your stuff will run a bit hotter. Audio stuff might pick up a buzz too. |

2 kW Gen set, cordless drill, angle grinder no die grinder. Phone and camera batt charger get a 12 volt car adaptor is the best way to go. Also have Solar Panel and charger for 12 volt system if required and your Australian partner in crime was an auto electrican prior to going to the dark side. Hope yer phone works, our phones work in most countrys of the world except the USA. See yer soon mate |

Jim Mate I still do a pretty good impression of an auto electrician, do not worry about your mobile as it will not work in Oz and only sat phones work on the salt which I got covered ok Paul Mate I hope this f truck is a big one or you got a trailer organised sounds like Jim is fixing to work on things on the salt.I think he needs schooling on the three step plan that seems to work for other fella's. |

Ross like everything in this world the F truck is allways going to ne 10% smaller than is required. As to trailer Jim will need to hire one that should not be a problem for one of dem der waelthy Ameribanracer types. Jim let me know how may 20 lt that 5 gallon in American speak drums of gas you will meed to take, if you dont take it you wont have it 200 km to closest Gas Station. Keepin touch. Any fkying dates yet. Was also thinking about a party for any or all of the American boys in Adelaide on Sat March 11th also happens to be my birfday. I always like an excuse to over eat and drink, let me know what you think Jim. |

Sounds like an excellent idea.I am waiting word on if they have a supplier of race gas already hooked up.Did you have a local vendor for 110-115 octane stuff.Gary(Hawkwind) may be able to supply nitrous, will see about that. |

Did you have a local vendor for 110-115 octane stuff. You need to be a lot more specific than 110 - 115 stuff. Available off the shelf in Adelaide is 102 Octane unleaded or 104 Avgas Leaded. Other than that higher octanes are available in Australia but you need 2 - 4 weeks notice and have to order 205 lt drum. I was told 110 is obtainable 115 is harder and 118 is very hard with the cost going up considerable. Race Fuell In Adelaide South Australia contact for you and any one else. Scotcher Race Fuell and Oils 3 Senna Road Wingfield South Australia Contact Peter Vann 61 8 8262 2200 Tel 61 8 8262 2900 Fax 61 417 869 419 Mob Jim you and the others need to sort this out otherwise you will end up with normal Pump gas. Peter Venn told me to get a full specifcation of the fuell you need and he will try to match it. IE: RON Research Octane number, Specific Gravity, Reid vapour pressure, Final Boiling point et etc etc. Hope this helps some. He has had problems in the past with people turnning up expecting to get somthing in Adelaide S.A. overnight and it dont happen if you pay through the nose for freight you might get in a few days. |
