Some of you may remember me looking into the Road Attacks here a while back. I got a set and immediatly fell in love with the agressive look. Had them mounted and right away liked the way they felt. Great drop into the curves, and great feedback.
First I must say that Greg Reich from Conti-NA, sent me an email that stated the rear tire pressure should be run @ 42psi, front @ 36psi. I tried that for a couple of weeks, but did not like how harsh the ride felt. It was the first time I had ever had the front tire 'skip' in the curves. My suspension was set up for my weight before anyone says something about that. So I rechecked with Mr. Reich and he said that:

Hi Jim!
Thanks for the feedback! You could safely run 38 rear & 34 cold psi. front, however our technicians designed the Road Attacks to run at higher psi due to the compliant steel belted casing and feel that 42 rear & 36 front offer the best combination for overall performance. Feel free to experiment, most that have tried lower pressure feel that 40 - 42 rear is best, but all riders are different. Let me know.

So I dropped the rear to 38, the front to 34, and it made a world of difference in the ride on the XB. Rubberdown and myself do some pretty aggressive riding in our area, and Not once did these tires ever give me a reason to flinch or pucker! Now my main reason fro wanting to try the tires is because many of us have been interested in the mileage vs grip factor. I don't know if these would be the perfect tire for a trackday, but I can honestly say that traction was not a factor up until I took my trip to ILL. to see my father. Some of you may have read that post, and on my second morning coming home, it was extremely cold. I ran across a situation that required some hard braking, how did they perform you ask? Front tire acted perfect, back end squiggled a little bit. OK what were the factors: COLD, an extra 55-60 lbs on the bike with no suspension modifications, and because of the reaction, maybe a bit heavy on the rear. Did this make me doubt the tire, not one bit. I rode on to the Dragon that afternoon, it was stil a chilly 43 degrees out, still no suspension changes, and still had extra weight on the bike:

DO I like the tire, YES. Would I recommend it to other riders, yes. Today I have close to 5,000 miles on the tire, and I figure an easy 1500 left on them. NO more long trips with straight aways, I will get alot higher.
Would I recommend them for a track day, probably not, as I have never done a track day and don't know all the factors involved. But I do know that for canyon riding, The tires stick!
Stick as well as M-1's
They have great mileage!
They will be on my bike again!


I should note that I have ran the Sportec M-1's
, the Bridgestone Battle AX, and of course the stockers. I was satisfied with the traction of all three tires, but the mileage I got out of them just plain stank! I have everybit of confidence in the Road Attacks as I did ANY of the others, and with the mileage I have gotten, A bigger smile.

From my usual vantage point,
chasing U4euh , I can attest they do indeed stick and I am pretty amazed at the longevity; better than my Avon 45/46 and the Conti's seem to keep the profile in the rear well. Great pics Jim!.

I ran conti's on my 79 suzi allways got great milage, except for one horrendus burnout,LOL

I take it that they get better life than the stockers, how long did the D20X last on your bike?

oldog-got about 4800 miles out of the stockers. Two factors to consider there were: new bike, and I wasn't interested in running it off the road, not to say that now I am(been there,done that). Just now I am one with bike and like to flog it!
2nd would be something that buckinfubba told me, I strictly used my front brake when I first got this bike, less friction on the rear. All that has changed now of course.
Total ride mileage was around 2700 miles. I got a flat spot, but as RBRDWN poste above, the tire has kept its' profile very well. IE-to say that when the other tires got a flat spot, I would have that moment going into a curve that transitions from flat spot to curved edges. Not on this tire! I would say that 70-75% of the trip was straightaway highspeed cruising(ssshhhh). So a flat spot will develop, it was just not as apparent on the RA's. I have some pics of tire break in, and some after the trip. I'll post later on, it is late!

I'm pretty pleased with the Avons. Typically, they don't seem to stick as well when the temps get cold. I did realize that I had too much front and rear preload and after adjustment they seem better in the cold. Wear is pretty good. It looks like I might get 4000 out of the rear. As a point of reference, I got 1900 to the wear bars on the stock rear. They do feel nice and turn well.

I too have had the Conti-Road Attacks on my xb12s for about 2,000 miles and am very happy with them. Very little wear at this point and they stick extremely well in the corners. Almost the best of both worlds. I would highly recommend them and will definitely buy again!

Hey U4euh,
stumbled on your review of the road attacks..awesome!!
I had put a pair of Dunlops on my 9r mid summer....but was looking seriously at the road attacks - I too like their aggressive look, and the fact that their billed as a sport-touring tire. now that I'm hearing that they offer great traction too, I'm sold!! That's what's going on next!!

Hey Jim, great post.. More than likely my next set of tires will be the road attacks. I saw a set listed at tireexpress.com for $194.99 plus $20 shipping. Pretty tempting. I'll be forced to do something by springtime anyway. Hopefully it will handle like a different bike after the Dunlops...That's what I've read. Maybe the next time I ride with you and Rubberdown ,I can close the gap a little bit. Yep, probably wishful thinking. Ha Ha Ha! Nice pics of you and the xb. Who took the shots? Take care Jim...later

Twig-wha's up?! You'll close the gap one day, just gotta get comfortable with your new steed. Besides you were not that far behind, so I'd say you were doing pretty da&% good.
