well, YEAAH! everyone knows the world's really flat...i Mean- if that high-speed rotation mumbo-jumbo were true, then when I throw a ball straight up in the air above my head, why doesn't it land in Jersey? and no WAY men walked on the moon. Nasa spent that money on a film studio and then 5 years worth of whiskey & er....'courtesans'. everyone knows that. why do you think thos buzz aldrin types are always giddy, anyway? |

the fact that you SEE the shadow is an anomaly, to me. i still don't see one from fifty-cent. the pictures are both fakes. trust me, i had exhaustive and boooooooooooooring hours of classtime in this hocus-pocus. the foreground "hyena" is dog that was digitally imposed with hyena markings and features, such as the "mane" with the attendant aura. the background hyena's a total canard. the second photo shows our undaunted hero walking an Akita, also digitally imposed with hyena features. Case Closed. |

incidentally, no-rice- hyenas are pack animals, closer to cats, and never to be trusted. they'd likely be nearly as bad a pet as a wolf. you want a rad pet, cheap, contact a mink farm in the midwest regarding 'culls' (the mink pups that they're going to destroy because the pelt colour isn't great). send them money for next-day air, and a nice container. mink are some of the ebst pets I know of. cleaner and more laid-back than ferrets, beautiful to look at, they enjoy swimming with you; i had one {orphaned wild pup}that thought joining me ice-fishing was the apogee of existence... loved to dance around on the ice and steal my minnows... when he got tired he'd snuggle in my carhartt and snore with his paws over his eyes. an they like sleeping under the covers. it's a shame those farms kill the culls, it'd be cool to start a business 'rescuing' them for pets. too many laws, though. anyway- mink are great pets. They'll live well on cat food and shrimp. get a dozen crayfish from your bait shop every few weeks and your mink's in heaven |

you are right, wolves are pack animals. there is always a leader in the pack though also. the wolf i have had for seven+ years is a part of the family that wont be gotten rid of till his death. he knows his place in the family(pack) and is reminded of it as often as needed. he is NEVER, and i mean absolutly NEVER, allowed to disobey what he is told. trust me i am more stubborn than you can imagine and have spent countless hours repeating the same processes over and over until he goes about it with no hesitations. including countless hours of staring contests (because as im sure u know avoiding the glare and looking away is a sign of weakness). he is also our biggest protector, and will not let my daughter out of his sight, or people he doesnt know near her with out my permision. the one that got ahold of me was not necissarily unexpected. the female was in heat, but she become irrate when he would harrass her all the time when she was with me, and of course he didnt like me being around her instead of him. so when for certain things they needed to be split up, he got pissed. something was bound to happen. this particular wolf had not been with us that long and i knew it was not the best idea to begin with, but i always seem to press my luck. wild animals are just like playing with fire. the longer u play the more likely it is that u will get burnt eventually. i dont care what animal it is(wolf, cougar...). prime exaple, look at sigfreid and roy. those tigers are there life and have been for years. how many have they raised. i'm sure they know almost all there is to know about them and it still happened my cougar was also a huge baby. would curl up and sleep with his head on my lap. i miss him. i had to put him down because of my stupid alcoholic exfather inlaw. bart(the cat), had never seen my father inlaw before even though he had been with us for along time. so when my father inlaw showed up drunk and decided to go in and teach bart some tricks things got really wound up really fast. i was telling him to get out of there as bart sat in the farthest corner from him with his hair standing but not making a sound, but he wouldnt listen. he began to yell and wave his arms while telling bart to roll over and dumb things like that as he walked closer. bart hissed at him and then my father inlaw punched him in the head. i thought he was going to get killed but bart just slamed him back into the opposite corner with his paws on his shoulders and pinned him there while hissing a few inches from my father inlaws face. then went back to his hiding space in the other corner. thought ok he got lucky and can get out of here. instead he went and took another swing at bart. this time part bit his hand right between the thumb and pointer finger and went and sat back down. two chances and my father inlaw still didnt learn. this time i caught him by the back of the head as he took another step towards bart and drug him out of there. after that i could not get bart calmed down enough to get anywhere near him. couldnt even get in to feed him. after a few days of him flipping out and ripping everything apart i finally had to put him down before he was able to get out and run loose. lynx died of cancer when it was 3. he had to be one of the most beautiful cats i have seen. dark silver colored with light silver tips on the ears. no one has to like me having wolves. that wont stop me from having them, just as one attacking me wont make me scared of them, or think they are all going to do that. if that was true i would never even ovn an animal with all the attacks that happen every year, tame or wild. |

THAT was an excellent post. wish I could rate it 10 stars, "no_rice". I respect your wolf-rearing immensely. really immensely. You obviously know what you're dealing with, and you're doing it right. shame about your ex-father in law and that cougar. also the lynx. They are beautiful creatures. at my garndparents' place on the hill overlooking The Rcoky point Inn in n. big sur, there's semitame bobcat cub that Z-girl and I nicknamed "Mr. Hobbes". he's a riot. I'd be taking a break from work, and sorta get a weird feeling, look behind me, and Mr. hobbes'd be looking at me, then he'd get right back to the serious business of listening to the little gopher hills for chow. cool little guy. I'd read, many years back, that bobcats don't tame, but i noticed many websites, through googling, that show very tame household bobcats. might just have to track out a den this spring. |

there is always more to learn. i do try to pay attention to any information i come across for wolves. a person can never be to informed. especially about something with a mind all its own. i know every animal is not tamable or predictable, but if a person can learn there body language it speaks volumes. my friends consider me nutz in many ways and this is just one of them, but i dont really think i am. i know a few people I think are nutz. they have alligators or crocadials running loose in there houses. big kiddie pool in the living room and all. now how do you train something like that. i have never been able to figure that one out. i never have forgiven my ex fatherinlaw for the whole ordeal with my cougar. he offerd to come over and put him down for me because i was having a hard time getting myself to do it. my response to him was something to the extent of him being the whole reason he had to be put down and i wasnt about to let him be the one to do it also. and as far as bobcats, i have a friend that is originally from kentucky and he raised a bobcat as a pet growing up. i never got to see anything but the pictures of it and cant remember at the moment how it died. he said though that it was EXTREMELY loyal to a fault. would never leave his side if he was home. he raised it and he was for all extents and purposes its mother. no one else could get near him with it around. or near it without him home. he said his own mother could not even go in his room if he wasn't home, to clean or anything, because the bobcat would have a fit. if i remember right it only got ahold of him once and not extremely bad, but i am not sure that it was an intentional thing from what i remember. kind of doubt it was intentional because i know he would like to raise another one someday. |

I've read and heard firsthand acccounts of lynx and cougar being loyal to a fault, esp. when raised alongside kids. I've known a few folks (in eastern europe) who had lynx as protection/companions for their own kids, as nobody could even look at the kids in the yard without the lynx giving a killing look and growl in the strangers' direction, while getting down low to attack. if they're bottle-raised alongside the kids, forget it. loyal to death, these guys assured me. plenty of pictures to back it up. one guy, guy who trained the doby with which we worked, said the lynx was far and away the best protector for his kids. period. would wail all day while they were at school, and bound out to the gate to meet them. hated all people who so much as glanced at the kids. gonna need me one of them someday soon. |

my wolf arctic (actually a timberwolf) used to kind of herd my daughter around, say if she was to close to the road or something he would be infront of her giving her a helping hand back the other way, lol he has been around since before she was born. with my ex wife and i divorced it was hard on him for awhile not having her around. he seemed like he was on crack when she came for the weekends, bouncing and jumping and running around. he rarely shows any agression and the only real times i have seen it is when something didn't seem right to him. when my daughter was about maybe a year or a little older a friend of ours was playing with my daughter on the floor and she slammed her hands on the ground infront of my daughter which startled her and she began to cry instantly. in the time it took me to look at them arctic was inbetween them with his hair raised showing his teeth and growling. now he had know this friend most of his life but arctic thought she was going to hurt my daughter and all he did was warn her that it was not about to happen. never made a move just let it be known. all it took was me telling him that it was ok, he looked at me and i told him it was ok again. he stoped and returned to my side and laid back down. had me wondering for a minute, but i have to admit it was very neat seeing that kind of reaction to what he thought was a threat to my daughter and the ease at which he trusted me to make the desicion that it was not. i can see how the lynx and cougar are that way. mine werent to that extent but the cougar was never around my daughter much and the lynx kind of became the wifes companion alittle more than mine. seems that most of the lynxs's for some reason from what i hear lean towards a stronger bond with females. not always, but from what most of the people that i know that have raised them say |

yep- true with big cats, too, that's why the good male handlers tend to be....er....well.... sigfried and roy. ...part of that maternal bond thing, where the cat thinks the human's it's mother. females are just better at that, and cats have that heightened awareness for subtle cues. wolves, and therefore dogs, to an extent, aligning themselves with the pack alpha, will bias toward the human male, who's social cues, in the wolf's world (deeper voice, strong commands, greater exhibited physical strength) signal a leader to stand next to. interesting stuff, really. with both, though, kids, esp. those which smell like their human hosts, are #1 in the house, as the animals (both canine and feline) have parenting urges as well. ....hence the wolf-child stories (?) of europe. |

wouldn't go near a hyena for a pet, jester. no way. now, bobcat tracks i can find in this weather, real easily, no need for me to get involved in shady dealings by any means. i won't get involvd with shady dealers. plus, i'm destitute. i'll get a couple chest freezers and poach whitetail year-round to feed the cats. |

Great picture, I can't get my dog to sit still long enough to get a good picture and when I do his pic has "red eye". We had a friend who bred a Collie and a Pit Bull, very protective and very nasty, but every time he would attack somebody, he would run for help. |

You take that pic on a full moon, Tom? And, yeah, Dewey's a little over a year and a half, now, but he's still a chick magnet. (Lot of good it does me.) As a puppy, it took three dogs tag-teaming him to keep up with his need to play constantly, and he nearly drove me to distraction around the house. But about the time he started mellowing out a little bit, a new puppy showed up at the boatyard, and he got his paybacks:

"That's a voracious hell-dingo from the other side." LOL that's what my GF calls him. Well... most of the time she calls him a dingo but sometimes she just calls him a ding dong. To see him & not know him you'd think he was like the lion from The Chronicles of Narnia. But to know him is to know that he's like the lion from The Wizard of OZ. |
