I was looking at the hellbender today instead of working and I noticed something that I didn't see earlier:
Where are the handlebar controls?

Twistgrip clutch? both brakes done by right foot?

I think there's a twist-grip front brake as well, both front brake and clutch controlled by rotating the grips. Of more use to show bikes than road bikes. I read once in some custom bike magazine that the twist clutch is a finicky bear to set up and keep happy.

hmm... with two handlebar grips, one for the twist clutch and one for the brake, that bike must not go too fast, hehehe...

Or it could get real interesting real fast if it does and you're not fully used to those types of controls.

I remember once as a kid that a neighbor kid broke his throttle grip on his dirt bike so he rigged up the cable to the front brake lever and disconnected the front brake. Problem was when you were holding on for dear life you were also at full throttle and the only way to reduce throttle was to let go of the death grip you had on the handlebars. Lots of fun riding with him and watching the show.

Look closely at this picture...

There are mounts but no front brake caliper. It's only noticable on this particular photo. None of the others show a direct right side shot of the bike.

Here's a couple of pics of the Hellbender that a friend of mine in Germany sent me over a year ago.
No front caliper:

zoomed in:
HB 3
I didn't realize that the wavy or sawtooth rear brakes were that powerful...

i think the front caliper might be concealed under the arm of the front fender. In the top pic of the post above mine I see some sort of line comming up on the left side.

Demonic looking for sure, and they sure do ride it as evidenced by the heel-marks on the swingarm (paint rubbed off).

On that missing front brake...I've heard of people removing them for speed runs "just in case" they either drag or accidentally fail...in the on position!

They (me included) take off the front caliper(s) and rotor(s) as they are one more source of aerodynamic drag that is not needed. Not from fear of locking up,and you make sure your rear pads are pried away from the rotor so there is no drag from it until you apply the brakes. With miles of runoff at Bonneville front brake is really not needed.

Any way they could have tucked a small caliper behind/inside the bulge in the front fender?

If it were just a show bike, why even have the front rotor?

The top pics were either a unfinished bike used to gage response, a preproduction Hellbender or a work in progress.

Remember the idler pully on the pre-production XB9R's?
