With the re-opening of The Beartooth Highway John Calhoun and I have once again set our sights on a western tour this coming summer...We will kick it off with HSTA's national rally in Avon, CO June 18 - 21 and then go on tour...Our route will be through Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota before hitting the slab for home here in St Louis...Below is a list of some of the roads I've identified so far but I'd really like your help if you have one or two roads in any of these states that you consider to be a "must ride" and they are not already on our list...They may be a "must" for either their scenic or technical values...Paved only for the most part , please, as we'll be on fairly heavily wighted down sport tourers but a bit of good gravel or dirt to get to someplace special is not a problem... STAR 2006 Ride Features Mileage...4,949... Included Idaho Sawtooth Scenic Byway ID 75 Idaho Salmon River Scenic Byway ID 75, US 93 Idaho/Montana Bitteroot/Salmon Scenic Byway US 93 Montana Lolo Run US 12 Montana Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway FDR 228 Montana St Regis-Paradise Scenic Byway MT135 Montana Flathead Indian Scenic Byway MT 83 Montana Going to the Sun Road...Glacier National Park Montana Kings Hill Scenic Byway US 89 Montana/Wyoming The Beartooth Scenic Byway US 212 Wyoming Chief Joseph Scenic Highway WY 296 Wyoming Bighorn Scenic Byway US 14 Wyoming Devils Tower National Monument South Dakota Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway SD 14A South Dakota Needles Highway SD 87 South Dakota Wildlife Loop...Custer State Park South Dakota Scenic Bar...Scenic SD South Dakota Badlands National Park Excluded Montana Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway Not Paved Thanks, Bob Thanks, Bob |

U.S. 50 between Colorado Springs and Montrose is a great ride. Take CO-115 to bypass Colorado Springs or take US-285 or US-24 south to 50 from I-80 or Denver. There are almost no roads not worth riding in that area. Big altitude changes, check the weather even in June, have warm layers readily handy. Jack |

Zion NP in SW Utah. We have this amazing winding road up the canyon and through a tunnel built in the 30s. I should have my SX by then so I could head through with you. |

Grand Junction to Durango in CO then to to Monte Vista, Buena Vista and Denver. Not sure of the road names but being from the flat lands and living near there a few years back, I thought they were the scariest, most beautiful roads/sights I had seen. Many places there are no guardrails because its too expensive to keep replacing them, and they don't do much good. Keep yours eyes peeled and stop often... |
