After reading the comments of so many surveys and the posts here we wanted to take some time to answer some of the questions and give you some feedback of what we have learned from the results of our survey. First off, we would like to tell you a little more about what we are involved in. We are a group of four students, all who are extremely new to the world of motorcycles. We were partnered with Buell early in the semester as part of a class called Product Development Project (PDP). This class meets for the first two hours of the day with the goal of, after a semester of work, the final tangible outcome will be a complete business plan of our product along with a PowerPoint presentation that we will present to our mentor company (Buell) with the hope that the product will eventually come to market. PDP is designed to provide us with exposure to the business world and the product development process. With that said, we would like to let you all know some of what we have learned from our first survey with the help of your responses. Here we go… with over 200 responses 97% of respondents were male. The largest age group was 31-35 with 26% of all respondents. The top 3 reasons why/when respondents rode their motorcycle were...joy/social riding (91%), commuting to work (80%) and, running errands (78%). 38% of riders seldom ride with passengers. 24% of riders utilize their backpack to carry belongings while 23% use their tank bag. Respondents rated durability the number one most important aspect of a backpack. 63% of all respondents said they would pay between $75 and $149 for a backpack. Strangely three respondents said they would carry some type of personal defense item, such as a firearm, in their backpack. The response that we enjoyed the most was to include “a billyclub with which to beat the Buell-bashing naysayers.” Lastly, we would like to clarify what we mean when we said “detachable backpack” because we were not very clear with that concept in the survey. What we mean is this backpack would attach to the triple tail of the Ulysses while riding and would be easily removable once the rider was stopped and would then be a backpack which the rider would be able to carry with him/her with them once they leave the bike. We hope that this helps to clarify some questions. If you have any further questions please feel free to e-mail us at teamvroooom@yahoo.com. |

Thanks for sharing the results. Very interesting stuff. I understood exactly what you meant by "detachable backpack", I'm confident most others did too. Good luck with your project. If the billy-club is too old school, a stun gun would work okay too. |

Ryker you need a bigger jacket pocket. Mine fits in most of my jacket pockets, but usually it fits in a nice DeSantis holster. I like the big stick idea also. |
