Anyone remember the thread on the insurance discussion about how the insurance companies were going to deny coverage when operating a motorcycle? We were encouraged to send a form letter to our congressman. Some said that email form letters didn't work... WRONG, Bucko! Here is the reply I received today: "Dear Mr. Cxxxxxxxx, Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). I appreciate the opportunity to respond. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when they change or lose their jobs. The act's aim was to prohibit employers from denying health care coverage based on pre-existing medical conditions. However, as you stated in your letter, benefits can be denied for those who are injured while engaging in legal transportation activities. On June 8, 2005, Congressman Burgess of Texas introduced H.R. 2793, the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act. This legislation would change the previous law to require health care coverage to people who are injured while engaging in legal transportation modes, like motorcycling. This legislation has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Should it come before the full U.S. House of Representatives, I will be sure to give it thorough consideration. I appreciate hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any other concerns or questions. It is important to note, due to heightened security procedures resulting from Anthrax and Ricin incidents, mail to my U.S. Capitol office is significantly delayed. I encourage you to contact me via my website at http://www.house.gov/reichert/ to expedite your thoughts and I apologize for any inconvenience. Sincerely, David G. Reichert Member of Congress" |

"layman's terms" - Some fun hating, ultra conservative, tight butt, republicans thought it would be a good idea (save money- mainly thiers) for private health insurance companies to be able to deny coverage to those people (us) that voluntarily participate in risky activities. i.e riding motorcycles. I sent the letter to my Rep. and Senator as well via e-mail as well and got a respoonse too. Doesn't look like the bill has much chance to pass. Good thing, it didn't make much sense and was completely descriminatory. I'm the insurance provider for my family, if I'm denied coverage, my wife and four kids wouldn't not have it either. Is that fair? There are over 2 million registered riders in the US. I don't think the county hospital system could handle any more work than they already have if it passed. |

Reading the bill (introduced by Some fun hating, ultra conservative, tight butt, republicans) seems to indicate that passage of the Bill would prohibit the insurance companies from denying coverage to people engaged in motorcycling, snowmobiling, etc. As long as the activity was legal. It appears to me that this would be a GOOD thing. Am I reading this wrong? |
