Thanks to all those that offered tips for my recent visit to San Francisco – while I wasn’t able to follow up on all of em, we did have a great time crawling around North Beach, communing with the spirit of the Fastest Man Alive and his cronies, taking in the sites in China Town (I believe I’ve had enough of that for a little while – pretty crowded!), riding the Cable Cars (note, when they holler “Cable Down,” don’t wait for it to fix itself – it won’t), and generally training for the coming Thanksgiving feast by eating way more than should be legal for a week or so . . . . .. .

I promised myself that I’d do two things while there, and managed to cover both bets . . . .

First, I spent a morning in Muir Woods, just across the bridge – if you have the chance, don’t miss it – what a glorious site – imagine a cathedral in the woods, and that’s the closest I can come to describing it to you – like a cathedral, the affect it has on folks is sorta kinda bi-polar. Some people just wandered in silence, taking in the beauty and sensing the amount of time these giants have survived. Others were made nervous by the surrounding, and found it necessary to speak loudly and aimlessly – I’m guessing to prove to themselves they existed – me, I was floored by the sights and smells – the forest was enough to take your breathe away – and I was lucky enough to see it with my better half! (lucky dog, lucky dog). I’ll not post fotos, or ramble on at length, trying to illustrate something I just can’t – suffice it to say, if you have a chance, go – if you’re not floored, I’ll refund your admission price!

The second treat I’d promised myself was to run at least a little of Route 1 north of the city –

Remember that Christmas you really, really wanted that Daisy BB rifle? And you got a copy of Black Beauty? Remember that concert by a favorite musician who was just a little off that night? Didja ever read a book by a cherished author who had decided to phone it in that time?

Well, the first 100 miles of Route 1 north of San Francisco is nothing at all like any of those experiences – what a delight! I’m afraid the folks at the car rental joint that shall remain nameless will be a little perplexed by the state of the tired and brakes on the lil blue Malibu, though. The poor dear was made to hustle a bit past it’s design spec, it would seem ;-}

Again, thanks to all who shared tips with me – I hope to be able to meet up with some of you in the coming months, and repaying your generosity!
