Saw this pop up on my other Buell board:

http://www.cherrypickerracing.com/news/october05/iom.asp

So, what's the scoop? Do we all need to plan to head up there?

That's on my calendar!

Bangor, ME to Sydney, NS shows as about 550 miles on my just received Microsoft Streets & Trips 2006.

That's one long day or two pleasant days if you take the trouble to get lost along the way a little.

Who is our local guy up there? Newfiebuell?

Bill,
I remember that when we were getting ready to come up and visit you that I was having trouble getting weather reports and such. Do you have a good site to go to that has weather data for Canada?
I wanted to do a little research to decide when the best time to come up next summer. I am inclined to try for 3 weeks but I don't know if I can get away that long. Since the wife & I have never been to New England together I would like to do both.

Try

The Weather Network

OR

Environment Canada

Best time in Newfoundland is late July to Early August.

Also,

If your planning on camping in September in Atlantic Canada you better be prepared for some nipplie weather, it cools off pretty quick once the sun goes down. Add a bit of rain to that and you have some pretty miserable camping.

"..be prepared for some nipplie weather..."

That will be great for the wet tee shirt contests. :>; ) Will this be like Sturgis, will some of them simply dispense with the tee shirts?

I'm wondering if we can find a campground somewhere along or near the race route. It will be off season by then, prices should be dropping, and we might be welcome there.

Maybe a scouting trip is in order in June or so?

The better half and I, and some friends rode up to Nova Scotia in August. We hooked up with COG (Concours Owners Group) members and a BMW group out of Johnstown, PA. We did NY to Maine, met up with the groups and then a high speed catamaran into NS. We had a fairly agressive itinerary with about 200-400 miles a day. We went up the east coast into Cape Breton and then back down the west coast. We did about a total of 2500 miles in 8 days. We avoided the major highways and did two laners 90% of the time. The roads are generally good, but a Ulysses would be ideal. I did more gravel and dirt stretches (generally due to road construction) on my fully loaded Concours that I really cared for. The wife who has no dirt riding experience had no problems on her Ninja 500. There is some breathtaking scenery. The population density is very light, and most cagers seem to respect the motorcyclists, often pulling over to let you pass. I'm told that the weather can get cold and foggy and damp. We lucked out. We had sun and 80 degree temps all week it was almost too hot at times. I'm told this was unusual weather. Only had one minor rain event. September may be a bit chilly though. The people are extrememly friendly. I couldn't think of a better place to host a road race. I could ride there every year and not get bored. Oh and the fish and chips are phenomenal.

It will be off season by then

No it isnt, considering the expected turn out, its far from out of season, all ready looked
Still trying to get the race course down, there is limited camping in Nova, and even less hotels, so if your not camping, i would get a room ASAP
The other thing to consider is, there might be camping all over, IE they may be lax on where you can camp, however if you want a shower, thats another story
Once i get all the info sorted i will let everyone know whats what as far as the group leaving the Chicago/France area, and how we will be doing it
We may need a place to park a trailer on the east coast, so if you have room, and are on the way, chime in(chicago to NY is boring and trailering out would save time and effort)
Keep the info coming

And one other thing to consider, our last trip sent us through Canada from Chicago to Newfoundland, Canadian gas price are significantly higher than the US, roads are darker(that is relative considering i live in one of the brightest cities on the planet)
And the the road that leads from Yarmouth to Halifax, is always incased in a fog bank, and triples the drive time, there are cool breaks in the fog, but its far and few between
Other tips i can pass along, arive to your camp site during the light hours, plan your trip at a reduced miles rate(if you want to have fun) IE first day is the highest miles, reducing each day until you hit about 200-300 miles, otherwise its more of a march than a fun trip, take secondary roads, you will be amazed at who you will meet on the way(i was, and its was great)
and remember the journey is the destination
I am going, 1/2 way planned, just need to sort out the bikes and gear
Whos joining us???

Sandy - The costs for The Cat (as of today) are as follows:

Bar Harbor to Yarmouth - 1 adult = $58
Bar Harbor to Yarmouth - 1 motorcycle = $65

The Cat has tie downs for bikes, you're welcome to bring you own too.

Next year The Cat may be running out of Portland (ME, of course) and Bar Harbor both. If that happens, it will be from Portland 3-5 days a week and out of Bar Harbor on the other days. It will be one or the other on any given day, it will not go to both Bar harbor and Portland on the same day.

Prices from Portland will likely be a little higher than from Bar Harbor and they may have changed a little by next year.

Here are some mileage estimates:
Yarmouth to Sydney (east side of island) = 435
Yarmouth to Sydney (west side of island) = 434
Bangor, ME to Sydney (via Calais, ME) = 555

Anyone looking for good trip planning/place finding software for a Windows PC or laptop might want to check out M$ Street & Trips 2006. It has good and current data down to street addresses anywhere in the U.S. Also does a good job on highways and secondary roads for Canada and has street level detail for most Canadian cities of any size. It is pretty cheap on Amazon. And you can hook a GPS up to your laptop and use it in a car/RV.

If someone can tell me the planned route for the race (road names/route numbers, etc.) I can probably put up a map of the course and area and also post a list of the POI's (motels, campgrounds, etc.) in the area.

I know a driveway

I was thinking that, but i didnt want to impose, i figured you could meet us in sprigfield VT, then we head from there, i dont think your drive way has enuff room for the crowd i expect(it might be 2 cars, but i wouldnt be suprised if it was three)
By the way, you are coming right????
and whats your thought on camping you cool with it or are you going to be a cry baby like Mr. Grumpy and Newfie(i have to camp, i am poor)
As far as the Cat ferry is concerned, its not a bad trip, but not its all cracked up to be, its worth the trip once, but i would rather ride it out, having done it both ways last time, and ad 10 bucks plus tax to your figure there, the 10 is for saftey screening, and expect to wait about an hour in line, its fun, saves some time, but again, i am riding it out, at least from springfield VT(the trip over from Chicago blows, did that to, will not do it again)
We really should take Newfies advice and start a thread in the storm fronts, so we can see whos coming and where everyone is staying
I have the map of the course, but its on paper, cant seem to get it on the computer, keeps getting jammed in the disk drive
Have to post some pics later on, after i load the reducing software

Roger,

I ordered a Nova Scotia Tourist Guide and should have it very soon.

That will give us a better idea of where to stay and what to expect.

I also have a contact over in Sydney, NS which is about 20 minutes from the Race Course. I am trying to get him for advice too.

I will keep you advised.

Did I see Char spring out of nowhere!!!!!!

We stayed at a nice little motel in Oxford, N.S. I don't recall the name but if I can find my receipts I can get it.
It was a little private one with a restaraunt right next door and just off the highway. I believe that Oxford is about 100mi. from Halifax.

I ordered a Nova Scotia Tourist Guide and should have it very soon

Got mine allready, not a lot out on the south western portion of the island
Check Louisburg, and Mira
I have so far found one camping site, but thats because i was looking at Candanan park land, i will have to check and see what i can find in the private sector(those are not listed on the official Nova map
I believe that Oxford is about 100mi. from Halifax.
Closer to the ferry or on the other side of the island
Sydney, NS which is about 20 minutes from the Race Course
I am trying to find a location which is closer to the course, i have heard stories from the iomTT, and would like to be as close as i can, considering what happens after the race, better safe than sorry, at least from what i have heard
Again, due to my inpoverished state, camping is for me, but you never know, especially if we find a house or cottage to rent

Newf said "Cape Breton TT Races" and that is over in Storm Fronts.

We should try to shift the conversation to there.

Maybe we can get one of the Custodians to move all these posts to the new thread?
