No explanation. I just spontaneously puked after having read your post. Sorry for the confusion. |

no sweat bud -- your reaction and mine to vets that lost limbs in combat can certainly be very different -- that's what makes a horse race, I spose |

I'm a combat vet myself. I have much respect for fellow vets regardless of their physical attributes or lack thereof. Don't confuse my reaction to your calling them 'sir' with my reaction to vets who lost limbs in combat. That is just silly. Besides, I hold no malice and I respect your strong feelings. I was just attempting to keep it light in here. It appears several folks seem to want to keep pooping in this threadpool. (Message edited by lowflyer on November 01, 2005) |

Thanks everyone for your contributions, especially Lowflyer for the pix of the cool hacked Buell- is that a Saeur sidecar out of Switzerland? My only complaint with that most awesome machine is the pricetag ($60,000)... The trikes are tempting, but to make them handle you need to make an independent rear suspension with the final drive mounted to the frame- otherwise Erik Buell would have a heart attack over the unsprung weight... Remember, we must remain faithful to the Trilogy of Tech! The retractable "landing gear" is an elegant solution, but leaves one with the problem of where to stow the wheelchair- I've seen a lightweight folding chair strapped to a backrest, but if the rider needs a bigger, heavier chair that's not an option. So IMHO the sidehack is still the best option. Now the Motor Company's own offering, with rigid frame to match the current Harley models of 1937 when it was last updated, is overdue for despatch to the corporate museum. Clearly something low and light and aero is called for here- perhaps something like the Vetter Terraplane? Or maybe an aerodynamic car top carrier like the Yakima mounted on a low slung frame, giving negligible air resistance with enough space to stow a wheelchair, camping gear, etc.? Let the "thread that wouldn't die" continue... |

there was a company in teens (I think) that made a hack called the "Flexibl" or something similar -- much like Vetter's product -- agree that some new thinkin in this area is needed, overdue, and ripe for a market that's underserved -- not only those who can't balance a traditional bike, but those with young chilluns as well |

Something to read about sidehacks: http://www.amadirectlink.com/magazine/2001/story2ja.html Found a whole sidecar forum: http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/category-view.asp Probably several folks carrying wheelchairs in their group. Here's a paraplegic thread http://www.sidecar.com/megabbs/thread-view.asp?threadid=1048 And here's a bunch of info from that thread:

While recovering from an ugly crash, sporting stainless in my foot, i would take daily rides on my sons little honda XR80, right leg propped up across the handle bar ( had to keep elevated for a month or so) it was sort of a wheel chair, only way i could get around and walk the dogs. after a while i graduated to crutches, and hopping around on left leg, limped for a couple years. wife and friends called me "gimpy " almost became a nickname, but my gait is now improved to the point that with boots on i walk normally. My long winded, and possibly irrelevant point here is that if you are gimping around, and your friends have failed to politely ignore your condition, and in fact actually recognize your plight, it is possible that they might really be good friends. I think it would be impolite to refer to a stranger in this fashion, but among friends or family it can be acceptable, if not used in a degrading or derogatory fashion. |

If you like the landing gear option, why not combine it with a lightweight chair hauling trailer? There are some lightweight one-wheeled trailers that could be adapted to haul a chair behind a Buell. |

I didn't save any day, I just had a couple of hour process to download and got curious so went searching for a bit while waiting for the computer to catch up is all. There was a documentary on PBS some time back about two old guys on old open-rocker bikes and one had one of them old tyme lean with the bike sidecars on it. Neat setup. The owner said he just had to remember to hit the oil pump to lube the rockers every once in awhile, or maybe it was rolling the throttle off and on a bit like the old 'knucks liked to have done on a hot day riding across the desert/flatlands. So, nah, I just got curious and went down a side path a ways. That's all. I liked that Oz-FMJ banner you posted earlier, good stuff. |

"it's a shame that, overall, our society had become so thin-skinned that we wake up each day looking for offence -- guess what, we often find it." Hmmph. I find that view offensive. |
