Chase, has that barge got a name or a number? I'm sort of curious. I just looked at your bio again, I've been on Pungo Ferry Road in a cage taking the back way to Little Creek from Northwest. I think what you liked about that ride was that you had your liberty card in hand and the Navy in the rear view mirrors when you were on it. Did you ever take Ballhack Road between 168 and 17? That could be a heartbreaker. It had 6 foot deep 10 foot wide ditches on each side. And ditch monsters that would reach up, snag cages by the wheels and pull them in. No one ever got a cage out of a ditch on Ballahack by themselves. Jack |

Mr Grumpy, Yes, there is a Federal regulation that all commercial motor vehicles must pass an annual vehicle inspection. The regulation is written to allow for the motor carrier to conduct its own annual inspection, if the motor carrier is not subject to a state mandated inspection. Our state(Michigan) does not have a state mandated inspection for trucks, only for motorcoaches and limousines. I do not believe that there are many states that do have a state annual inspection program, maybe New York and Pennsylvania. Most have random roadside inspection programs or some have border inspections. |

Swampy, do you do carrier inspections? In Md. the state can walk into your office at any time and give you a full compliance check at any time. Reguardless of your compliance status. Logs, DOT inspection reports, Drug test results, medicals, driver qualification, walk out in the yard and dot a unused truck, the whole 9 yards. And you better have it all, right now. I've no statistical data by any means, but 2 of my friends have had this and it cost $20,000 for one and $28,000 for the other. I only have 4 trucks and work out of my home, thankfully I wasn't home when they showed up there. I did hire a compliance specialist after hearing that I was on the list and he said I dodged a bullet and helped me get my paperwork straight. Are you saying all you do in Michigan is roadside inspections? PS: this thread is boring for most of you, but for me it has been enlightining and informative. Sorry about the hijack. |

"HSV-2 SWIFT" - Okay, nice ride. I've ridden The Cat ferry out of Bar Harbor, she is the same design and was built by the same company. That's the fastest I've ever moved on the water while standing comfortably with a beer in hand and trying to outwit a slot machine. I knew about Liberty cards, but I still have one of mine. And my draft card too. They ought to bring those both back, if would be great if the Bush and Cheney grandkids were given an opportunity to fight terrorism too. Jack |

Sportsman, the monthly or bi-monthly inspections can be done in house if you have qualified staff, but the yearly is DoT, the DoT, Police, Customs, can ALL come & turn you over, either collectively or if you're really in the doodoo, serially. The tyre debris I saw was from Chicago down to Deals Gap. We have much stricter drivers hours in Europe, Do a Google search & you'll see what I mean. Look at Tachograph as well. The company I drive for has around 1200 trucks all Volvo cabover. |

Sportsman, Yes thats me, they are called Compliance Reviews. I do both the annual inspections, roadside inspections, and the compliance reviews. I only do them on commercial motorcoach companies. Yes sometimes it does get expensive when CDL, log, or drug testing violations are found, but I don't get wood or anything from it like some people I work with. If it helps any, I get tons of follow up calls from carriers to ask questions about the regulations and how to meet the regulations. Its fun listening to the questions from the drivers and straightening out the "Old Wives Tales" I also conduct formal training sessions for carriers and drivers, I have settled alot of bets. I always give out my cell number, and I get calls at home when they have a problem. I have inspected motorcoaches in front of my house at times when companies get in a bind. "To know me is to love me." Mr Grumpy, My office is a truck also. |
