Granted, it is a kid/toy version, but it *is* cheap and self contained... http://www.i4u.com/article4297.html A hundred dollars gets you 40 minutes of recording capability & a laser sight so you know what you are pointing at /recording. |

I saw that in the NY Times, and thought , for a hundred bucks you can't go wrong. |

If they are claiming 40 minutes from 32 megs of flash, that has to be really crappy video. The CVS disposable video camera is easily hackable to be fully reusable and runs about $25, and will store 20 minutes of TV quality video with audio (128 megs of flash). You can solder in an internal $.59 USB receptacle with 4 wires (8 solder joints). That is a cool packaging setup though... |

15 fps per http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000747061094/ Same company also made this http://www.i4u.com/article3539.html which records at 640x480, so the helmet cam could possibly be the same |

It's neat for the fact that you don't have to hack something to save any/much money. I'm imagining now how fun this toy would be combined with another (my kid's pocketbike). |

I was thinking of filming the climb up mount washington. I want to see the video quality. The laser pointer idea is brilliant! |

I'm very much interested in that mod Reep... Please explain. I'm dying to get some decent video of The Spars on here. I think it's REALLY close to the road Erik had in mind when he made the XB. I'm pretty sure Erik and Court have been on it. Maybe just Court... |

Yup. I can post pictures for the mod that is much simpler and cheaper then making a custom cable from palm III bits. The only part you need is: http://www.dalco.com/ProductDetails2.aspx?sku=64287 56 cents each. Though you could also just get a USB extension cable and cut that up and use it as well. I will post pictures of the wiring to fit in the connector, it is an easy hack, hot melt glue and 8 solder joints on 4 wires. The "saturn tools" from the link M1 posted above work great, that is all you need to install on a XP machine, mac and linux tools exist as well. The project is over on sourceforge. I know first hand the XP stuff works, a buddy here at work got the Mac stuff working last night. I have not tried the Linux stuff. It goes native to XVID on the camera, so you download that and do what you want. The windows media player has a nice XVID codec, and windows movie maker can edit the video. |

So the only hardware alteration is the usb port!? That's funny as hell! |

Yup. Everything is there, just hook up the 4 usb wires to whatever connector you want. The tricky part was the software. Somebody really smart got really lucky, or it was an inside leak (either deliberate or accidental). It would not be that hard to cryptographically lock one of these things down proper, they just didn't do it with this one. |

The download for the PC drivers are at: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=145193&package_id=163302 Awww geesh. There I go with links and schematics. Next thing you know I will have to lecture myself about putting this on the quickboard instead of the knowledge vault... |

Another 100 dollar'ish helmet cam! http://www.atc1000.com/poison.asp?p=street This one is expandable with SD memcards. Looks to be self contained - nothing at site suggests otherwise. Sample video at site. Appears though that it does not record sound. Dunno if other one does either... |
