Blake- those Border Collies, as I'm sure you're aware, are the most intelligent breed. Once, after being overseas for too long, I came home and my mom had procured an excellent border collie from the pound. Only thing was, It was near-silent. She was worried it was mute. So one day, while she wass out shopping to get some nice vittles to cook up, I took it upon myself to sit with that collie, on the back deck, and howl. and howl. and yip. and howl. after awhile, the little collie would sort of whimper, then she did some yips, and eventually, fullblown , high-piched coyote wailing. When my mom got back, I showed her her dog's new 'trick'. about a second of ypiing from me sent the little dog into a fire-whistle-like wail. mom wasn't real stoked. Luvthemtorts- Where in Va. are you? Your tortoises sound very cool. There are some cool pets on this board- |

Tramp, I am located right on the outskirts of Roanoke. Not only do we have excellent herping opportunities we have plenty o' twisty roads so make sure you bring the scoot with ya! The torts and turtles are pretty neat but I don't really consider them pets. More of an assurance colony for future generations. On a happy note my two eggs I got the other day have "chalked" which as I'm sure you know means they are fertile. 75 days or so and we'll see for sure LOL. Anyway back to our trip. Mid May really kicks things of here with most herps either breeding or out sunning and easily photographed. I am going to post some pics so I can tempt you into coming down. |

Tramp, Temtation brother!! Sorry for the poor picture quality. The originals are so big that I had to reduce them tremendously to get them loaded. added carriage returns between pics to prevent page from going over-width. Blake (Message edited by blake on October 01, 2005) |

More added character spaces between pics to prevent page from going over-width. Please do likewise when posting multiple pics. And it also helps to insert pics on a new line as well, especially to separate the pics from the previous text string as applicable. Thanks, Blake (Message edited by blake on October 01, 2005) |

I have two cats. One that I rescued from the mean streets of the Bronx (now 10 years old). And another 1 year old which we just adopted a month ago to replace a cat that I believe was taken by a coyote. This new one was rescued from a box in a McDonald's parking lot. She is a gorgoeous gray tiger striped tabby. My wife and I are speculating as to why she ended up in a box in the first place. I have some theories and it is becoming more evident. For instance, yesterday as I was doing some light bookkeeping I took my eyes off the computer for a second, and the new cat jumped on the computer desk and started stepping on the keys. I heard a window pop up and looked up just in time to see a dialog box asking me if I'm sure I'd wanted to delete the entire "Shipped Customers Database". I grabbed her and lifted her off the keyboard at the last second. She is constantly doing stuff like this. We love them both, but this new one is quite a test. |

Tramp, That's a funny story. One that I can relate to well. At one point, Roger, our BC had a vocabulary of over 200 words. I sure have learned a lot about the intelligence of animals. They are a lot more intelligent than I ever gave them credit for. Roger had no trouble grasping abstract concepts like "other." If I introduced a person to him by name, he then knew them by name, period. "Roger; take your raquetball to Tramp." Better not have your back turned to him; he has a good sense of humor and if your back were turned would try to hand off whatever toy he was delivering in a rather insensitive and alarming (to the recipient) way. LOL. Good grief, he's barking to be let back inside. Sixteen years old this month. He's been a real blessing and a joy in my life and one of my best friends ever. I'm going to really miss him when he passes. He's been a member of the family since he was just six weeks old. (Message edited by blake on October 01, 2005) |

We are owned by two yellow house cats, 13 year old Buddy and 9 year old Phydeaux (pronounced Fido, aka Bubbah). And we provide short term hosting, for meal purposes, to a large number of nuthatches, chickadees, finches, jays, juncos, sparrows, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, gulls, crows, ravens and whatever else happens by. Unfortunately, we also have some kestrals and hawks that occasionally like to interact with the dinner guests. But everyone has to eat... Whatever else happens by includes red and gray squirrels, an occasional chipmunk, skunks, racoons, bears, deer, and an occasional moose or two. A moose cow and her calf traipsed through just a week or so ago. The bears destroy the bird feeders if any food is left in them and generally make a nuisance of themselves. Their latest insult was two large piles of bear dung left on our septic field (an open grass covered area much like a small lawn) for me to discover with the lawnmower and my shoes. I found it interesting that the bear(s) would do that out in an open area. But it does not answer the question as to whether or not a bear would defecate within the confines of a stand of herbaceous woody perennials. The red squirrel population is down to two or so from a peak of 15 +/- at midsummer. I think a Goshawk that started making regular rounds the last few months has severely discouraged their presence. That guy probably has a lifting capacity of 30 pounds but he does like the snack sized critters too. One young male red squirrel that is a regular visitor now has been named "Tarzan" for the 3 to 8 second long trilling calls he makes on arrival each morning. He shows up early each morning and proclaims all edibles in the area as his. But the chickadees, nuthatches, and jays continually challenge his claim. Tarzan has been burying peanuts and sunflower seeds all over the area against winter needs. Like we'd quit feeding them or something. There is a running joke up here in Maine about the joys of eating Chickadee Fricasee, we've not tried it yet and probably never will... Jack |

Very, very cool indeed. We've got three dogs. Nikki, female chow-chow, and she'll be 17 very soon. She's on some prescription drugs for a bad hip, but can still chase cats, squirrels, and the occasional stray animal -- she's lost her hearing along the way, but will (when she wants to do so) respond to hand signals (of course she's had a mind of her own since she was weened.) We've also got a 3 year old German Shep who's amazingly intelligent and a 3 year old mini pinscher (that dog can do everything but talk too.) Funny stories? While I was out of the country last year my wife had a 3/4 acre lot fenced in so the dogs could hang out and not bother anyone or stray off and get hit/stolen. First day she put the dogs in the fence the Sheppard opened the gate and the mini-pinsh burrowed out -- this all happened in the span of about 10 minutes. Now the gate just stays open and Max, the GS, just runs out to 'his' fenced area and hangs out on the inside. Gate wide open. If it weren't for the wasted money on the project it'd be really funny. :-) G2 |
